1 John 4
Berean Study Bible

Testing the Spirits

Beloved,

John addresses his readers with pastoral affection, treating them as fellow members of God’s family who must be guarded from error.

3Jn 1:2 Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper…
Jud 1:3 Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you…
2Pe 3:1 Beloved, this is now my second letter to you.…

do not believe every spirit,

Not every claim of spiritual authority comes from God. Teachers, prophets, and movements may present themselves as spiritual while being influenced by deception.

1Th 5:21 but test all things. Hold fast to what is good.
Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you…

but test the spirits

Believers are responsible to examine teaching carefully, measuring its message about Christ and its agreement with God’s revealed truth.

God does not contradict His own revelation. What is truly from Him honors Jesus Christ, affirms the gospel, and leads people in obedience to Him.

Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak…

For many false prophets have gone out into the world.

False teachers were already active among the churches, spreading doctrines that distorted the person and work of Christ. Their presence required alertness and discernment among God’s people.

Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets. They come to you…
Mat 24:11 and many false prophets will arise and deceive many.
2Pe 2:1 Now there were also false prophets among the people…

By this you will know the Spirit of God:

John gives believers a clear standard for distinguishing the Holy Spirit’s testimony from the influence of false teachers. Some within and around the early church promoted ideas that distorted the identity of Christ, threatening the faith delivered by the apostles.

1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…
1Co 2:12 We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit…
Jhn 16:13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes…

Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh

True teaching openly affirms that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, truly became man. He did not merely appear human or inhabit a temporary body; He entered history in real flesh, lived among people, suffered, died, and rose bodily. This directly opposed early forms of Gnostic teaching that denied or diminished His genuine humanity.

2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world,…
1Ti 3:16 By common confession, the mystery of godliness is great:…
Jhn 1:14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.…

is from God,

A confession consistent with the apostolic witness bears the mark of God’s Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not lead people to deny Christ’s incarnation, but confirms the truth of who He is and what He came to accomplish as the God-man and Savior.

1Jn 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world…
Jhn 8:47 Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God.…
Rom 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.

John identifies denial of Jesus as a decisive mark of false teaching. Some teachers in the early church rejected the reality of Christ’s incarnation or separated His humanity from His divine identity. Such teaching opposed the apostolic witness that Jesus Christ came in the flesh as the Son of God and Savior.

2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world,…
1Co 12:3 Therefore I inform you that no one who is speaking…
Rom 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”…

This is the spirit of the antichrist,

Opposition to Christ was already at work through those who distorted His person and message. The spirit of the antichrist resists Christ’s authority, denies the truth about Him, and seeks to lead believers away from the gospel.

1Jn 2:22 Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies…
2Th 2:3-4 Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come…

which you have heard is coming

Believers had been taught that a future enemy of Christ would arise in connection with widespread deception and rebellion. John’s warning shows that the same kind of opposition was already appearing before that final fulfillment.

1Jn 2:18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you have heard…
2Th 2:8-9 And then the lawless one will be revealed…
Mat 24:24-25 For false Christs and false prophets will appear…

and which is already in the world at this time.

False teachers were active within and around the churches of John’s day. Their presence required believers to test spiritual claims by the truth revealed in Christ and taught by the apostles.

2Pe 2:1 Now there were also false prophets among the people…

You, little children,

John addresses his readers with the affection of a spiritual father, recognizing them as members of God’s family who need instruction and protection.

1Jn 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you……
1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no one deceive you:…

Their identity rests in God’s work of bringing them into His family, setting them apart from the unbelieving world.

The Holy Spirit leads believers to embrace the truth concerning Christ, while the spirit of deception works through false teachers who depart from the apostolic message.

Love Comes from God

Beloved,

John warmly addresses fellow believers as members of God’s family.

1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,…
3Jn 1:2 Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper…
Rom 12:19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved; leave room…

let us love one another,

He calls them to active, selfless care for one another, crossing social standing, background, and personal interest.

Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
1Jn 3:11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning:…
2Jn 1:5 And now I urge you, dear lady—not as a new commandment…

because love comes from God.

True love originates in God and reflects His character, shown most fully in the giving of His Son.

1Jn 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us,…
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
Rom 5:8 But God proves His love for us in this:…

Everyone who loves has been born of God

Such love is evidence of the new birth and of a life being shaped by God’s nature.

1Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life…
1Jn 5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ…
Jhn 1:12-13 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed…

and knows God.

Knowing God is a personal, obedient relationship that is seen in love for His people.

1Jn 2:3-4 By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…
Gal 4:9 But now that you know God, or rather are known by God,…

Whoever does not love

Love marks the life of those who belong to Christ. It is not mere sentiment but self-giving concern for others, shaped by God’s own character and expressed in obedience to Him.

1Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life…
1Jn 3:10 By this the children of God are distinguished…
1Co 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels…

does not know God,

To know God is to live in a real relationship with Him. Such knowledge changes the heart and conduct; a settled absence of love reveals that a person has not truly come to know Him.

2Th 1:8 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance…
Gal 4:8-9 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves…
Jhn 8:55 You do not know Him, but I know Him…

because God is love.

Love belongs to God’s very nature. His holy and faithful love was revealed fully in the sending and sacrifice of His Son. Believers are therefore called to reflect His character in their treatment of one another.

Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
Rom 5:8 But God proves His love for us in this:…
Tit 3:4-5 But when the kindness of God our Savior…

This is how God’s love was revealed among us:

God’s love was made visible in history through the incarnation of Jesus Christ. John writes to believers troubled by false teaching and directs them to the decisive act by which God disclosed His character and purpose.

Tit 3:4-5 But when the kindness of God our Savior…
Rom 5:8 But God proves His love for us in this:…
1Jn 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us,…

God sent His one and only Son into the world,

The Father sent Jesus, His unique and eternal Son, into a world fallen under sin and death. Christ’s coming fulfilled God’s promised plan of redemption and showed that salvation begins with God’s initiative, not human effort.

Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
Jhn 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world…
Gal 4:4-5 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,…

so that we might live through Him.

Through Christ’s death and resurrection, those who believe receive forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and eternal life. Life in Him begins now through faith and reaches its fullness in the resurrection.

1Jn 5:11-12 And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life,…
Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled…
Jhn 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.…

And love consists in this:

Love is defined by God’s initiative and character, shown in deliberate, costly action rather than human feeling alone.

1Jn 3:16 By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down…
Jhn 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life…
Rom 5:8 But God proves His love for us in this:…

not that we loved God,

Humanity’s sinfulness left people alienated from God and unable to claim that reconciliation began with their devotion to Him.

Rom 5:6 For at just the right time, while we were still powerless…
Tit 3:4-5 But when the kindness of God our Savior…
Deu 7:7-8 The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you…

but that He loved us

God freely set His love upon sinners and acted to restore those who had turned from Him.

Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
Jer 31:3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying:…
Eph 2:4-5 But because of His great love for us, God,…

and sent His Son

The Father sent the eternal Son into the world in the incarnation, fulfilling God’s plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.

Jhn 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world…
Gal 4:4-5 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,…
Rom 8:3 For what the law was powerless to do in that…

as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

By His death, Jesus bore the penalty of sin and satisfied God’s righteous judgment, accomplishing the atoning sacrifice (hilasmos, meaning propitiation or expiation) needed to reconcile believers to God.

Rom 3:25 God presented Him as an atoning sacrifice…
Heb 2:17 For this reason He had to be made like His brothers…
1Pe 2:24 He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree…

Beloved,

John addresses his readers as fellow members of God’s family, joined by faith in Christ and marked by the love that comes from God.

1Jn 3:2 Beloved, we are now children of God…
1Jn 3:21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us,…
1Pe 4:12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial…

if God so loved us,

God revealed His love by sending His only Son into the world to bear the penalty of sin and provide eternal life for those who believe.

Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
Rom 5:8 But God proves His love for us in this:…
Eph 2:4-5 But because of His great love for us, God,…

we also ought to love one another.

Those who have received such undeserved love are obligated to show it to fellow believers through faithful care, forgiveness, and selfless service.

1Jn 3:11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning:…
Jhn 13:34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
Jhn 15:12 This is My commandment, that you love one another…

No one has ever seen God;

God’s full glory and essence are beyond human sight. Even Moses was not permitted to see God’s face, because sinful humanity cannot endure the direct revelation of His holiness. God has made Himself known through His works, His word, and supremely through His Son.

Jhn 1:18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son…
1Ti 6:16 He alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light.…
Jhn 6:46 not that anyone has seen the Father except the One…

but if we love one another,

Love among believers gives visible evidence of God’s work in His people. This love is shown in sacrificial care, faithfulness, forgiveness, and concern that crosses worldly divisions.

1Jn 3:11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning:…
Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
1Th 4:9 Now about brotherly love, you do not need…

God remains in us,

Through the Holy Spirit, God dwells with every true believer. His presence is no longer identified with a temple building but with the people redeemed by Christ, both individually and as the church.

1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…
Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
1Co 3:16 Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple……

and His love is perfected in us.

God’s love reaches its intended result as believers increasingly live in obedience and love toward one another. Such love reveals the transforming work of God and displays His character before the world.

1Jn 2:5 But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God…
Col 3:14 And over all these virtues put on love…

By this we know that we remain in Him,

Believers receive assurance of fellowship with God through the continuing evidence of faith, obedience, and spiritual life. Remaining in Him describes an enduring union with Christ rather than a temporary profession.

1Jn 2:24 As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning…
Jhn 15:4 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you…
Jhn 14:20 On that day you will know that I am in My Father,…

and He in us:

God’s presence with His people fulfills His covenant purpose to dwell among them. This mutual relationship unites believers to Christ and shapes their daily conduct, fellowship, and hope.

2Co 6:16 What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols…
Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
Rom 8:10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin…

He has given us of His Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to all who belong to Christ. His presence confirms salvation, produces holy character, gives spiritual understanding, and empowers believers to live according to God’s will.

1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…
Jhn 14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another…
Gal 4:6 And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son…

And we have seen and testify

John speaks as an apostolic eyewitness, joined by those who personally knew Jesus during His earthly ministry. Their testimony rests on what they saw and heard, affirming that Jesus truly came in the flesh and was not merely a spiritual appearance or human teacher.

Jhn 19:35 The one who saw it has testified to this, and his testimony……
Act 2:32 God has raised this Jesus to life, to which we are all witnesses…
Act 4:20 For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen…

that the Father has sent His Son

Jesus’ coming began with the Father’s purpose and initiative. The Son existed with the Father before His earthly life and entered the world in obedience to the Father’s saving plan. His mission reveals the unique relationship of the Father and the Son.

Jhn 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world…
Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,…
Rom 8:3 For what the law was powerless to do in that…

to be the Savior of the world.

Jesus came not only for Israel but for people from every nation. He saves humanity from sin through His death and resurrection, fulfilling God’s promise to bring salvation beyond the boundaries of one people.

Jhn 4:42 They said to the woman, “We now believe…
Jhn 12:47 As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them,…
1Ti 4:10 To this end we labor and strive, because we have set…

If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God,

Open acknowledgment of Jesus’ true identity marks genuine faith. Jesus is fully divine, the eternal Son who came in the flesh to accomplish salvation. In the early church, this confession distinguished believers from false teachers who denied either Christ’s deity or His true humanity.

Jhn 11:27 “Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I believe that You are…
Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ…
Jhn 1:49 “Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God!”…

God abides in him,

God makes His dwelling in those who receive His Son. Through the Holy Spirit, believers belong to God and become His living temple, no longer separated from Him by sin.

1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…
Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
1Co 3:16 Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple……

and he in God.

The believer shares a real and enduring union with God. This relationship is expressed in faithful obedience, fellowship with God, and a life shaped by Christ’s truth.

Jhn 17:21 that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me…
Jhn 17:23 I in them and You in Me—that they may be perfectly united,…
Col 3:3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ…

And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us.

John speaks of a settled conviction formed through the revelation of God in Christ. God’s love is not abstract sentiment but was shown in the sending of His Son for sinners. Believers recognize this love and rest their faith in it.

Jhn 17:26 And I have made Your name known to them,…
Eph 3:19 of the love of Christ, and to know this love…
Rom 5:8 But God proves His love for us in this:…

God is love;

Love belongs to God’s essential nature. His love is holy, faithful, and just, expressed supremely in His saving work through Jesus Christ.

Exo 34:6 Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out:…
Psa 103:8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger…
Psa 136:26 Give thanks to the God of heaven! His loving devotion…

whoever abides in love abides in God,

A life marked by genuine love shows a continual, enduring fellowship with God. Such love does not earn salvation but reflects the character of those who have received God’s grace and remain in communion with Him.

Jhn 15:9-10 As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.…
1Jn 2:5 But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God…
Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is…

and God in him.

God truly dwells in His people by His Spirit. This union gives assurance of salvation and calls believers to live in a manner consistent with the presence of the holy God.

1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…
Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
1Co 3:16 Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple……

In this way, love has been perfected among us,

God’s love reaches its intended expression when believers live in faithful love toward one another. Such love demonstrates that they belong to God and that His work is producing spiritual maturity within His people.

1Jn 2:5 But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God…
Col 3:14 And over all these virtues put on love…
Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is…

so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment;

Those who abide in God need not face the coming judgment with fear. Their confidence rests on Christ’s saving work and is evidenced by a life marked by love, obedience, and fellowship with God.

1Jn 3:19-21 And by this we will know that we belong to the truth,…
1Jn 2:28 And now, little children, remain in Christ,…
Rom 8:33-34 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect?…

for in this world we are just like Him.

Believers remain in a world opposed to God, yet they are called to reflect Christ’s character in their conduct. As Christ lived in righteousness and love, His people are to bear that same likeness before the world.

1Jn 3:2 Beloved, we are now children of God…
Rom 8:29 For those God foreknew, He also predestined…
2Co 3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory…

There is no fear in love,

God’s love gives believers security before Him. Those who belong to Christ need not live in dread of God’s final judgment, because His love has been shown fully in the salvation He provides.

2Ti 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power…
Rom 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery…
Psa 34:4 I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me…

but perfect love drives out fear,

God’s complete and mature love removes the terror of punishment. As believers grow in confidence in His forgiveness and faithfulness, fear loses its hold.

Heb 2:14-15 Now since the children have flesh and blood,…
1Jn 3:21-22 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us,…
Rom 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, …

because fear involves punishment.

The fear in view is the expectation of judgment and condemnation. Apart from Christ, judgment is certain; in Him, forgiveness and acceptance are assured.

Heb 10:26-27 If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received…
2Th 1:9 They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction,…
Mat 25:46 And they will go away into eternal punishment,…

The one who fears has not been perfected in love.

Persistent fear of condemnation reveals an incomplete grasp of God’s love and the security He gives. Growth in faith brings a settled confidence in His mercy and promises.

1Jn 2:5 But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God…
Eph 3:17-19 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts…
Jas 1:4 Allow perseverance to finish its work, …

We love

Believers are called to reflect God’s character by loving one another with a willing, self-giving love. Such love marks those who belong to Christ and stands in contrast to the self-centered patterns of the world.

1Jn 3:16 By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down…
Rom 5:8 But God proves His love for us in this:…
Jhn 15:9-10 As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.…

because He first loved us.

Love begins with God, not with human effort or merit. He acted in grace toward sinners through the gift and sacrifice of His Son. His prior love gives believers both the reason and the ability to love others.

Deu 7:7-8 The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you…
Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled…
Eph 2:4-5 But because of His great love for us, God,…

If anyone says, “I love God,”

A profession of love for God must be confirmed by a life shaped by His commands. Biblical love involves wholehearted devotion, not words alone.

Mat 15:8 These people honor Me with their lips,…
Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions…
Jas 1:26 If anyone considers himself religious…

but hates his brother,

Fellow believers belong to the same spiritual family. Hatred contradicts Christ’s command that His disciples love one another and damages the unity of the church.

1Jn 2:9-11 If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother…
Lev 19:17-18 You must not harbor hatred against your brother…
1Jn 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, …

he is a liar.

Such a claim is false because conduct reveals that the professed relationship with God is not genuine. Fellowship with God cannot be separated from obedience to His character and commands.

Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry…

For anyone who does not love his brother,

Love for other Christians is an essential evidence of faith and preserves the church’s witness amid conflict, hardship, and division.
