Berean Study Bible I Lift Up My Eyes to the HillsPsalm 121 belongs to Psalms 120–134, sung by Israelite pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. Jerusalem stood among the hills of Judah, and the journey upward reflected the approach to the place where the Lord had chosen to set His name. Psa 120:1 A song of ascents. In my distress I cried to the LORD,… I lift up my eyes to the hills. As travelers neared Jerusalem, the surrounding ridges came into view. The hills could suggest strength and security, yet they also contained high places associated with false worship. The psalmist looks beyond the landscape to the God who rules over it. Psa 123:1 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to You… From where does my help come? The question turns attention away from human strength, geography, or religious sites. Help comes not from the hills but from the Lord, the Creator and Keeper of His people. Psa 124:8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven… My help comes from the LORD, Israel’s covenant God had delivered His people from Egypt, sustained them in the wilderness, and defended them against their enemies. The psalmist looks beyond human strength and earthly alliances to the Lord as the sure source of protection and aid. Psa 124:8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven… the Maker of heaven and earth. Because He created and rules over all things, nothing lies beyond His power or care. The God who formed the world is fully able to preserve His people within it. Psa 115:15 May you be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven… He will not allow your foot to slip; God’s care gives His people firm footing amid the dangers and uncertainties of life. The image reflects the rocky paths of the land, where a misstep could bring injury or ruin. His covenant faithfulness preserves those who depend on Him and keeps them from spiritual overthrow. Psa 66:9 He preserves our lives and keeps our feet from slipping. your Protector will not slumber. Israel’s God is never distracted, weakened, or absent. Unlike the false gods of surrounding nations, He does not sleep or fail to hear. He watches over His people continually, guarding them with the unfailing care fulfilled in Christ, the Good Shepherd. Pro 6:22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you lie down… Behold, The psalmist calls attention to a settled truth about God’s care for His covenant people. Isa 40:9 Go up on a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news.… the Protector of Israel God watches over the nation He chose, preserving them through danger, conflict, and exile according to His purposes. Deu 32:10 He found him in a desert land, in a barren… will neither slumber His care is never weakened by fatigue, distraction, or delay. Psa 78:65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a mighty warrior… nor sleep. Israel’s security rests in the continual watchfulness of the Lord, who remains fully aware of every threat and need. Isa 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD… The LORD is your keeper; God watches over His people with the care of a shepherd guarding his flock. Israel’s security did not rest in human strength, military power, or favorable circumstances, but in the LORD’s constant care. As the covenant God of Israel, He remained personally attentive to their needs and preservation. Gen 28:15 Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go… the LORD is the shade on your right hand. In the heat of the land, shade offered essential protection and relief. The LORD stands near His people in the place of strength and action, guarding them from dangers that would overwhelm them. His presence provides refuge amid the hardships and threats of life. Isa 4:6 a shelter to give shade from the heat by day… The sun will not strike you by day, The Lord watches over His people amid the real dangers of travel, labor, and exposure to the intense heat of the land. The image includes sunstroke and every danger encountered in daylight. Rev 7:16 Never again will they hunger, and never will they thirst;… nor the moon by night. God’s protection also extends through the night, when darkness brought uncertainty, danger, and fear. Together, day and night express His continual care in every circumstance. Isa 60:19-20 No longer will the sun be your light by day,… The LORD will guard you from all evil; The psalmist presents the LORD as the faithful protector of His people in every danger. His care is not limited to visible threats but includes every force that opposes their welfare and faithfulness. God’s protection does not promise a life free from hardship, yet no evil can ultimately separate His people from His purpose and care. 2Th 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you… He will preserve your soul. The LORD watches over the whole person, sustaining life and keeping His people for Himself. Even when earthly circumstances bring suffering or death, their lives remain secure in God’s hands. His preserving care reaches beyond the present life to the eternal salvation of those who belong to Him. Pro 16:17 The highway of the upright leads away from evil;… The LORD will watch over your coming and going, God’s care extends over every part of life, from daily routines to journeys near and far. His guardianship is present and unending. The Lord does not abandon His people with changing circumstances or the passing of years; His faithful care reaches through this life and into eternity.
