Manasseh Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 21:1–9)

1  בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁתֵּ֥ים (of two) עֶשְׂרֵ֛ה (and ten) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (Manasseh was) בְמָלְכ֑וֹ (in his reigning), וַחֲמִשִּׁ֤ים (and fifty) וְחָמֵשׁ֙ (and five) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem). 2  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כְּתֽוֹעֲבוֹת֙ (according to the abominations) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations) אֲשֶׁר֙ (whom) הוֹרִ֣ישׁ (had cast out) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מִפְּנֵ֖י (before) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 3  וַיָּ֗שָׁב (And he turned) וַיִּ֙בֶן֙ (and built) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּמ֔וֹת (the high places) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נִתַּ֖ץ (had broken down) יְחִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ (Hezekiah) אָבִ֑יו (his father), וַיָּ֨קֶם (and he raised up) מִזְבְּח֤וֹת (altars) לַבְּעָלִים֙ (for the Baals), וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (and he made) אֲשֵׁר֔וֹת (Asherah poles), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ (and he worshiped) לְכָל־ (all) צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens) וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֖ד (and served) אֹתָֽם׃ (them).

4  וּבָנָ֥ה (And He built) מִזְבְּח֖וֹת (altars) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁר֙ (of which) אָמַ֣ר (had said) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֥ם (In Jerusalem) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) שְּׁמִ֖י (My name) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever). 5  וַיִּ֥בֶן (And he built) מִזְבְּח֖וֹת (altars) לְכָל־ (for all) צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens) בִּשְׁתֵּ֖י (in the two) חַצְר֥וֹת (courts) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 6  וְהוּא֩ (And he) הֶעֱבִ֨יר (caused to pass) אֶת־ (-) בָּנָ֤יו (his sons) בָּאֵשׁ֙ (through the fire) בְּגֵ֣י (in the Valley) בֶן־ (of Ben-) הִנֹּ֔ם (Hinnom). וְעוֹנֵ֤ן (And he practiced sorcery), וְנִחֵשׁ֙ (and used divination), וְֽכִשֵּׁ֔ף (and practiced witchcraft), וְעָ֥שָׂה (and consulted) א֖וֹב (mediums) וְיִדְּעוֹנִ֑י (and spirists). הִרְבָּ֗ה (He multiplied) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) הָרַ֛ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לְהַכְעִיסֽוֹ׃ (to provoke Him to anger).

7  וַיָּ֕שֶׂם (And he set up) אֶת־ (-) פֶּ֥סֶל (a carved image) הַסֶּ֖מֶל (of the idol) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he made) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים (of God), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (of which) אָמַ֤ר (had said) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִיד֙ (David) וְאֶל־ (and to) שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה (Solomon) בְנ֔וֹ (his son), בַּבַּ֨יִת (In the house) הַזֶּ֜ה (this) וּבִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (and in Jerusalem), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) בָּחַ֙רְתִּי֙ (I have chosen) מִכֹּל֙ (out of all) שִׁבְטֵ֣י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אָשִׂ֥ים (I will put) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמִ֖י (My name) לְעֵילֽוֹם׃ (forever); 8  וְלֹ֣א (and not) אוֹסִ֗יף (I will again) לְהָסִיר֙ (remove) אֶת־ (-) רֶ֣גֶל (the foot) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מֵעַל֙ (from) הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הֶֽעֱמַ֖דְתִּי (I have appointed) לַאֲבֹֽתֵיכֶ֑ם (for your⁺ fathers), רַ֣ק׀ (only) אִם־ (if) יִשְׁמְר֣וּ (they are careful) לַעֲשׂ֗וֹת (to do) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) צִוִּיתִ֔ים (I have commanded them) לְכָל־ (according to all) הַתּוֹרָ֛ה (the law) וְהַֽחֻקִּ֥ים (and the statutes) וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֖ים (and the ordinances) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (of Moses).

9  וַיֶּ֣תַע (And seduced) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (Manasseh) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָ֖ה (Judah) וְיֹשְׁבֵ֣י (and the dwellers) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (of Jerusalem) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to do) רָ֔ע (more evil) מִן־ (than) הַ֨גּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations) אֲשֶׁר֙ (whom) הִשְׁמִ֣יד (had destroyed) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מִפְּנֵ֖י (before) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel).

Manasseh’s Repentance and Restoration
(2 Kings 21:10–18)

10  וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה (Manasseh) וְאֶל־ (and to) עַמּ֖וֹ (his people), וְלֹ֥א (and not) הִקְשִֽׁיבוּ׃ (they did listen). 11  וַיָּבֵ֨א (And brought) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (upon them) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֤י (the captains) הַצָּבָא֙ (of the army) אֲשֶׁר֙ (of) לְמֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) אַשּׁ֔וּר (of Assyria), וַיִּלְכְּד֥וּ (and they captured) אֶת־ (-) מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה (Manasseh) בַּחֹחִ֑ים (with the hooks), וַיַּֽאַסְרֻ֙הוּ֙ (and they bound him) בַּֽנְחֻשְׁתַּ֔יִם (with the bronze), וַיּוֹלִיכֻ֖הוּ (and took him) בָּבֶֽלָה׃ (to Babylon). 12  וּכְהָצֵ֣ר (And was in affliction) ל֔וֹ (he); חִלָּ֕ה (he implored) אֶת־ (-) פְּנֵ֖י (before the face) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֑יו (his God), וַיִּכָּנַ֣ע (and he humbled himself) מְאֹ֔ד (greatly) מִלִּפְנֵ֖י (before) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) אֲבֹתָֽיו׃ (of his fathers), 13  וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל (and he prayed) אֵלָ֗יו (to Him). וַיֵּעָ֤תֶר (And He received entreaty) לוֹ֙ (of him) וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (and He heard) תְּחִנָּת֔וֹ (his supplication) וַיְשִׁיבֵ֥הוּ (and brought him back) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (to Jerusalem) לְמַלְכוּת֑וֹ (into his kingdom). וַיֵּ֣דַע (And knew) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (Manasseh) כִּ֥י (that) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), ה֥וּא (He) הָֽאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (is God).

14  וְאַחֲרֵי־ (And after) כֵ֡ן (this) בָּנָ֣ה (he built) חוֹמָ֣ה (a wall) חִֽיצוֹנָ֣ה׀ (outer) לְעִיר־ (the City) דָּוִ֡יד (of David), מַעְרָבָה֩ (on the west) לְגִיח֨וֹן (of Gihon) בַּנַּ֜חַל (in the valley), וְלָב֨וֹא (and as far as the entrance) בְשַׁ֤עַר (of Gate) הַדָּגִים֙ (the Fish), וְסָבַ֣ב (and it enclosed) לָעֹ֔פֶל (Ophel) וַיַּגְבִּיהֶ֖הָ (and heightened it) מְאֹ֑ד (exceedingly), וַיָּ֧שֶׂם (and he put) שָֽׂרֵי־ (captains) חַ֛יִל (military) בְּכָל־ (in all) הֶעָרִ֥ים (the cities) הַבְּצֻר֖וֹת (fortified) בִּיהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah).

15  וַ֠יָּסַר (And he turned aside) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֨י (the gods) הַנֵּכָ֤ר (of the stranger) וְאֶת־ (and) הַסֶּ֙מֶל֙ (the idol) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וְכָל־ (and all) הַֽמִּזְבְּח֗וֹת (the altars) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) בָּנָ֛ה (he had built) בְּהַ֥ר (in the mount) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) וּבִירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (and in Jerusalem), וַיַּשְׁלֵ֖ךְ (and he cast them) ח֥וּצָה (outside) לָעִֽיר׃ (of the city). 16  וַיָּכֶן (And he established) אֶת־ (-) מִזְבַּ֣ח (the altar) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וַיִּזְבַּ֣ח (and sacrificed) עָלָ֔יו (on it) זִבְחֵ֥י (sacrifices) שְׁלָמִ֖ים (of peace offerings) וְתוֹדָ֑ה (and thank offerings), וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and he told) לִֽיהוּדָ֔ה (Judah) לַעֲב֕וֹד (to serve) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 17  אֲבָל֙ (But) ע֣וֹד (still) הָעָ֔ם (the people) זֹבְחִ֖ים (sacrificed) בַּבָּמ֑וֹת (on the high places)— רַ֖ק (only) לַיהוָ֥ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃ (their God).

18  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֣י (of the acts) מְנַשֶּׁה֮ (of Manasseh), וּתְפִלָּת֣וֹ (and his prayer) אֶל־ (to) אֱלֹהָיו֒ (his God), וְדִבְרֵי֙ (and the words) הַֽחֹזִ֔ים (of the seers) הַֽמְדַבְּרִ֣ים (speaking) אֵלָ֔יו (to him) בְּשֵׁ֥ם (in the name) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), הִנָּ֕ם (behold) עַל־ (are in) דִּבְרֵ֖י (the Words) מַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 19  וּתְפִלָּת֣וֹ (And his prayer) וְהֵֽעָתֶר־ (and entreaty) לוֹ֮ (to Him), וְכָל־ (and all) חַטָּאת֣וֹ (his sin) וּמַעְלוֹ֒ (and trespass), וְהַמְּקֹמ֗וֹת (and the places) אֲשֶׁר֩ (where) בָּנָ֨ה (he built) בָהֶ֤ם (in them) בָּמוֹת֙ (high places) וְהֶעֱמִיד֙ (and set up) הָאֲשֵׁרִ֣ים (the Asherah poles) וְהַפְּסִלִ֔ים (and the carved images) לִפְנֵ֖י (before) הִכָּנְע֑וֹ (he was humbled), הִנָּ֣ם (indeed) כְּתוּבִ֔ים (they are written) עַ֖ל (among) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the Words) חוֹזָֽי׃ (of Hozai). 20  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) מְנַשֶּׁה֙ (Manasseh) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers), וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֖הוּ (and they buried him) בֵּית֑וֹ (in his own house). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אָמ֥וֹן (Amon) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

Amon Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 21:19–26)

21  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֧ים (of twenty) וּשְׁתַּ֛יִם (and two) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) אָמ֣וֹן (Amon was) בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁתַּ֣יִם (and two) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּֽירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem). 22  וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַע֙ (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) עָשָׂ֖ה (had done) מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (Manasseh) אָבִ֑יו (his father).

וּֽלְכָל־ (And to all) הַפְּסִילִ֗ים (the carved images) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) עָשָׂה֙ (had made) מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (Manasseh) אָבִ֔יו (his father), זִבַּ֥ח (sacrificed) אָמ֖וֹן (Amon) וַיַּֽעַבְדֵֽם׃ (and he served them). 23  וְלֹ֤א (And not) נִכְנַע֙ (he did humble himself) מִלִּפְנֵ֣י (before) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) כְּהִכָּנַ֖ע (as had humbled himself) מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (Manasseh) אָבִ֑יו (his father), כִּ֛י (for) ה֥וּא (himself) אָמ֖וֹן (Amon) הִרְבָּ֥ה (has multiplied) אַשְׁמָֽה׃ (guilt).

24  וַיִּקְשְׁר֤וּ (And conspired) עָלָיו֙ (against him) עֲבָדָ֔יו (his servants) וַיְמִיתֻ֖הוּ (and killed him) בְּבֵיתֽוֹ׃ (in his own house). 25  וַיַּכּוּ֙ (And struck) עַם־ (the people) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַקֹּֽשְׁרִ֖ים (those conspiring) עַל־ (against) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) אָמ֑וֹן (Amon), וַיַּמְלִ֧יכוּ (and made king) עַם־ (the people) הָאָ֛רֶץ (of the land) אֶת־ (-) יֹאשִׁיָּ֥הוּ (Josiah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
