Idolaters to Be Put to Death

1 כִּֽי־ (If) יָק֤וּם (there arises) בְּקִרְבְּךָ֙ (from among you) נָבִ֔יא (a prophet) א֖וֹ (or) חֹלֵ֣ם (a dreamer) חֲל֑וֹם (of a dream), וְנָתַ֥ן (and he gives) אֵלֶ֛יךָ (to you) א֖וֹת (a sign) א֥וֹ (or) מוֹפֵֽת׃ (a wonder),

2 וּבָ֤א (and comes to pass) הָאוֹת֙ (the sign) וְהַמּוֹפֵ֔ת (or the wonder) אֲשֶׁר־ (of which) דִּבֶּ֥ר (he spoke) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), נֵֽלְכָ֞ה (Let us go) אַחֲרֵ֨י (after) אֱלֹהִ֧ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֛ים (other) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) יְדַעְתָּ֖ם (you have known)) וְנָֽעָבְדֵֽם׃ (and let us serve them),

3 לֹ֣א (not) תִשְׁמַ֗ע (you shall listen) אֶל־ (to) דִּבְרֵי֙ (the words) הַנָּבִ֣יא (of the prophet) הַה֔וּא (that) א֛וֹ (or) אֶל־ (to) חוֹלֵ֥ם (dreamer) הַחֲל֖וֹם (of the dream) הַה֑וּא (that). כִּ֣י (For) מְנַסֶּ֞ה (is testing) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ God) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺), לָדַ֗עַת (to know) הֲיִשְׁכֶ֤ם (whether you⁺) אֹֽהֲבִים֙ (love) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God) בְּכָל־ (with all) לְבַבְכֶ֖ם (your⁺ heart) וּבְכָל־ (and with all) נַפְשְׁכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ soul).

4 אַחֲרֵ֨י (After) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ God) תֵּלֵ֖כוּ (you⁺ shall walk), וְאֹת֣וֹ (and Him) תִירָ֑אוּ (you⁺ shall fear) וְאֶת־ (and) מִצְוֺתָ֤יו (His commandments) תִּשְׁמֹ֙רוּ֙ (you⁺ shall keep), וּבְקֹל֣וֹ (and His voice) תִשְׁמָ֔עוּ (you⁺ shall obey), וְאֹת֥וֹ (and Him) תַעֲבֹ֖דוּ (you⁺ shall serve), וּב֥וֹ (and to Him) תִדְבָּקֽוּן׃ (you⁺ shall hold fast).

5 וְהַנָּבִ֣יא (And prophet) הַה֡וּא (that) א֣וֹ (or) חֹלֵם֩ (dreamer) הַחֲל֨וֹם (of the dream) הַה֜וּא (that), יוּמָ֗ת (he shall be put to death), כִּ֣י (because) דִבֶּר־ (he has spoken) סָ֠רָה (in order to turn you away) עַל־ (from) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֜ם (your⁺ God)— הַמּוֹצִ֥יא (who brought out) אֶתְכֶ֣ם׀ (you⁺) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרַ֗יִם (of Egypt) וְהַפֹּֽדְךָ֙ (and redeemed you) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) עֲבָדִ֔ים (of slavery)— לְהַדִּֽיחֲךָ֙ (to drive you out) מִן־ (from) הַדֶּ֔רֶךְ (of the way) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (in which) צִוְּךָ֛ (commanded you) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) לָלֶ֣כֶת (you to walk) בָּ֑הּ (in it). וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ (And you shall put away) הָרָ֖ע (the evil) מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃ (from among you).

6 כִּ֣י (If) יְסִֽיתְךָ֡ (entices you) אָחִ֣יךָ (your brother), בֶן־ (the son) אִ֠מֶּךָ (of your mother), אֽוֹ־ (or) בִנְךָ֨ (your son), אֽוֹ־ (or) בִתְּךָ֜ (your daughter), א֣וֹ׀ (or) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) חֵיקֶ֗ךָ (of your bosom), א֧וֹ (or) רֵֽעֲךָ֛ (your friend) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who is) כְּנַפְשְׁךָ֖ (as your own soul), בַּסֵּ֣תֶר (secretly), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), נֵֽלְכָ֗ה (Let us go) וְנַֽעַבְדָה֙ (and serve) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֔ים (other) אֲשֶׁר֙ (which) לֹ֣א (not) יָדַ֔עְתָּ (you have known), אַתָּ֖ה (you), וַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (and your fathers))

7 מֵאֱלֹהֵ֣י (of the gods) הָֽעַמִּ֗ים (of the peoples) אֲשֶׁר֙ (who are) סְבִיבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (all around you⁺), הַקְּרֹבִ֣ים (near) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you) א֖וֹ (or) הָרְחֹקִ֣ים (far off) מִמֶּ֑ךָּ (from you) מִקְצֵ֥ה (from the end) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the earth) וְעַד־ (and to) קְצֵ֥ה (the end) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth)),

8 לֹא־ (not) תֹאבֶ֣ה (you shall consent) ל֔וֹ (to him) וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִשְׁמַ֖ע (listen) אֵלָ֑יו (to him). וְלֹא־ (And not) תָח֤וֹס (shall pity) עֵֽינְךָ֙ (your eye) עָלָ֔יו (him), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תַחְמֹ֥ל (shall you spare him), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תְכַסֶּ֖ה (conceal) עָלָֽיו׃ (him).

9 כִּ֤י (But) הָרֹג֙ (killing) תַּֽהַרְגֶ֔נּוּ (you must surely kill him). יָֽדְךָ֛ (Your hand) תִּֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) בּ֥וֹ (against him) בָרִֽאשׁוֹנָ֖ה (the first) לַהֲמִית֑וֹ (to put him to death), וְיַ֥ד (and the hand) כָּל־ (of all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) בָּאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃ (afterward).

10 וּסְקַלְתּ֥וֹ (And you shall stone him) בָאֲבָנִ֖ים (with stones), וָמֵ֑ת (and until he dies), כִּ֣י (because) בִקֵּ֗שׁ (he sought) לְהַדִּֽיחֲךָ֙ (to entice you away) מֵעַל֙ (from) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) הַמּוֹצִיאֲךָ֛ (who brought you out) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), מִבֵּ֥ית (out of the house) עֲבָדִֽים׃ (of slavery).

11 וְכָל־ (And all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) יִשְׁמְע֖וּ (shall hear) וְיִֽרָא֑וּן (and fear), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יוֹסִ֣פוּ (add) לַעֲשׂ֗וֹת (to do) כַּדָּבָ֥ר (such) הָרָ֛ע (wickedness) הַזֶּ֖ה (as this) בְּקִרְבֶּֽךָ׃ס (among you).

Idolatrous Cities to Be Destroyed

12 כִּֽי־ (If) תִשְׁמַ֞ע (you hear someone) בְּאַחַ֣ת (in one) עָרֶ֗יךָ (of your cities) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֥ן (gives) לְךָ֛ (you) לָשֶׁ֥בֶת (to dwell) שָׁ֖ם (there), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (one saying),

13 יָצְא֞וּ (have gone out) אֲנָשִׁ֤ים (men), בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) בְלִיַּ֙עַל֙ (of worthlessness), מִקִּרְבֶּ֔ךָ (from among you) וַיַּדִּ֛יחוּ (and enticed) אֶת־ (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֥י (the dwellers) עִירָ֖ם (of their city), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), נֵלְכָ֗ה (Let us go) וְנַעַבְדָ֛ה (and serve) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֖ים (other) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לֹא־ (not) יְדַעְתֶּֽם׃ (you⁺ have known)),

14 וְדָרַשְׁתָּ֧ (then you shall inquire), וְחָקַרְתָּ֧ (and search out), וְשָׁאַלְתָּ֖ (and ask) הֵיטֵ֑ב (diligently); וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and indeed) אֱמֶת֙ (truth) נָכ֣וֹן (is established)— הַדָּבָ֔ר (the thing) נֶעֶשְׂתָ֛ה (that has been done) הַתּוֹעֵבָ֥ה (abomination) הַזֹּ֖את (this) בְּקִרְבֶּֽךָ׃ (among you)—

15 הַכֵּ֣ה (striking) תַכֶּ֗ה (you must strike) אֶת־ (-) יֹֽשְׁבֵ֛י (the dwellers) הָעִ֥יר (of city) הַהוּא (that) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חָ֑רֶב (of the sword), הַחֲרֵ֨ם (utterly destroying) אֹתָ֧הּ (it) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) בָּ֛הּ (in it), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּהֶמְתָּ֖הּ (its livestock), לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חָֽרֶב׃ (of the sword).

16 וְאֶת־ (And) כָּל־ (all) שְׁלָלָ֗הּ (its plunder) תִּקְבֹּץ֮ (you shall gather) אֶל־ (into) תּ֣וֹךְ (the middle) רְחֹבָהּ֒ (of the street), וְשָׂרַפְתָּ֨ (and burn) בָאֵ֜שׁ (with the fire) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֤יר (the city) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) שְׁלָלָהּ֙ (its plunder) כָּלִ֔יל (completely) לַיהוָ֖ה (before YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God). וְהָיְתָה֙ (And it shall be) תֵּ֣ל (a heap) עוֹלָ֔ם (forever); לֹ֥א (not) תִבָּנֶ֖ה (it shall be built) עֽוֹד׃ (again).

17 וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יִדְבַּ֧ק (you shall cling to) בְּיָדְךָ֛ (in your hand) מְא֖וּמָה (any) מִן־ (of) הַחֵ֑רֶם (the accursed things), לְמַעַן֩ (so that) יָשׁ֨וּב (will turn) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) מֵחֲר֣וֹן (from the burning) אַפּ֗וֹ (of His anger), וְנָֽתַן־ (and show) לְךָ֤ (you) רַחֲמִים֙ (mercy), וְרִֽחַמְךָ֣ (and have compassion on you), וְהִרְבֶּ֔ךָ (and multiply you) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) נִשְׁבַּ֖ע (He swore) לַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (to your fathers),

18 כִּ֣י (because) תִשְׁמַ֗ע (you have listened) בְּקוֹל֙ (to the voice) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God), לִשְׁמֹר֙ (to keep) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) מִצְוֺתָ֔יו (His commandments) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (that) אָנֹכִ֥י (I) מְצַוְּךָ֖ (command you) הַיּ֑וֹם (today), לַעֲשׂוֹת֙ (to do) הַיָּשָׁ֔ר (what is right) בְּעֵינֵ֖י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ס (your God).
