1  אֵ֠לֶּה (These are) הַֽחֻקִּ֣ים (the statutes) וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִים֮ (and ordinances) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תִּשְׁמְר֣וּן (you⁺ shall be careful) לַעֲשׂוֹת֒ (to observe) בָּאָ֕רֶץ (in the land) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) נָתַ֨ן (is giving) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֧י (God) אֲבֹתֶ֛יךָ (of your fathers) לְךָ֖ (to you) לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ (to possess), כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִ֔ים (the days) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אַתֶּ֥ם (you⁺) חַיִּ֖ים (live) עַל־ (on) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ (the earth).

2  אַבֵּ֣ד (Destroying) תְּ֠אַבְּדוּן (you⁺ shall destroy) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַמְּקֹמ֞וֹת (the places) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (where) עָֽבְדוּ־ (served) שָׁ֣ם (there) הַגּוֹיִ֗ם (the nations) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אַתֶּ֛ם (you⁺) יֹרְשִׁ֥ים (shall dispossess) אֹתָ֖ם (-) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם (their gods)— עַל־ (on) הֶהָרִ֤ים (the mountains) הָֽרָמִים֙ (high), וְעַל־ (and on) הַגְּבָע֔וֹת (the hills), וְתַ֖חַת (and under) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֥ץ (tree) רַעֲנָן׃ (green). 3  וְנִתַּצְתֶּ֣ם (And you⁺ shall break down) אֶת־ (-) מִזְבּחֹתָ֗ם (their altars) וְשִׁבַּרְתֶּם֙ (and smash) אֶת־ (-) מַצֵּ֣בֹתָ֔ם (their pillars), וַאֲשֵֽׁרֵיהֶם֙ (and their Asherah poles) תִּשְׂרְפ֣וּן (you⁺ shall burn) בָּאֵ֔שׁ (with the fire), וּפְסִילֵ֥י (and the carved images) אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֖ם (of their gods) תְּגַדֵּע֑וּן (you⁺ shall cut down) וְאִבַּדְתֶּ֣ם (and you⁺ shall destroy) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמָ֔ם (their names) מִן־ (from) הַמָּק֖וֹם (the place) הַהֽוּא׃ (that). 4  לֹֽא־ (Not) תַעֲשׂ֣וּן (you⁺ shall do) כֵּ֔ן (thus) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

5  כִּ֠י (For) אִֽם־ (rather) אֶל־ (unto) הַמָּק֞וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) יִבְחַ֨ר (chooses) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ God) מִכָּל־ (out of all) שִׁבְטֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ tribes) לָשׂ֥וּם (to establish) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (His Name) שָׁ֑ם (there) לְשִׁכְנ֥וֹ (as His dwelling), תִדְרְשׁ֖וּ (you⁺ shall seek) וּבָ֥אתָ (and you shall go) שָֽׁמָּה׃ (there). 6  וַהֲבֵאתֶ֣ם (And you⁺ shall bring) שָׁ֗מָּה (there) עֹלֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ burnt offerings), וְזִבְחֵיכֶ֔ם (and your⁺ sacrifices), וְאֵת֙ (and) מַעְשְׂרֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ tithes), וְאֵ֖ת (and) תְּרוּמַ֣ת (the contributions) יֶדְכֶ֑ם (of your⁺ hands), וְנִדְרֵיכֶם֙ (and your⁺ vowed offerings), וְנִדְבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (and your⁺ freewill offerings), וּבְכֹרֹ֥ת (and the firstborn) בְּקַרְכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ herds) וְצֹאנְכֶֽם׃ (and your⁺ flocks). 7  וַאֲכַלְתֶּם־ (And you⁺ shall eat) שָׁ֗ם (there) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God), וּשְׂמַחְתֶּ֗ם (and you⁺ shall rejoice) בְּכֹל֙ (in all) מִשְׁלַ֣ח (the sending out) יֶדְכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ hands)— אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺) וּבָתֵּיכֶ֑ם (and your⁺ households) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (with which) בֵּֽרַכְךָ֖ (has blessed you) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God).

8  לֹ֣א (Not) תַעֲשׂ֔וּן (you⁺ shall do) כְּ֠כֹל (at all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) אֲנַ֧חְנוּ (we) עֹשִׂ֛ים (are doing) פֹּ֖ה (here) הַיּ֑וֹם (today)— אִ֖ישׁ (man) כָּל־ (every) הַיָּשָׁ֥ר (whatever is right) בְּעֵינָֽיו׃ (in his own eyes). 9  כִּ֥י (For) לֹא־ (not) בָּאתֶ֖ם (you⁺ have come) עַד־ (as) עָ֑תָּה (yet) אֶל־ (to) הַמְּנוּחָה֙ (the rest) וְאֶל־ (and) הַֽנַּחֲלָ֔ה (the inheritance) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָֽךְ׃ (to you).

10  וַעֲבַרְתֶּם֮ (And you⁺ will pass over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּן֒ (the Jordan) וִֽישַׁבְתֶּ֣ם (and dwell) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (in the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ God) מַנְחִ֣יל (is giving to inherit) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺), וְהֵנִ֨יחַ (and He will give rest) לָכֶ֧ם (to you⁺) מִכָּל־ (from all) אֹיְבֵיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ enemies) מִסָּבִ֖יב (round about) וִֽישַׁבְתֶּם־ (so that you⁺ dwell) בֶּֽטַח׃ (in safety), 11  וְהָיָ֣ה (and there will be) הַמָּק֗וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) יִבְחַר֩ (chooses) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֥ם (your⁺ God) בּוֹ֙ (in it) לְשַׁכֵּ֤ן (to dwell) שְׁמוֹ֙ (for His Name) שָׁ֔ם (there); שָׁ֣מָּה (there) תָבִ֔יאוּ (you⁺ shall bring) אֵ֛ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) מְצַוֶּ֣ה (command) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺)— עוֹלֹתֵיכֶ֣ם (your⁺ burnt offerings), וְזִבְחֵיכֶ֗ם (and your⁺ sacrifices), מַעְשְׂרֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ tithes), וּתְרֻמַ֣ת (and the contributions) יֶדְכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ hands), וְכֹל֙ (and all) מִבְחַ֣ר (your choice) נִדְרֵיכֶ֔ם (offerings) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּדְּר֖וּ (you⁺ vow) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH). 12  וּשְׂמַחְתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺ shall rejoice) לִפְנֵי֮ (before the face of) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֒ (your⁺ God)— אַתֶּ֗ם (you⁺), וּבְנֵיכֶם֙ (and your⁺ sons), וּבְנֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (and your⁺ daughters), וְעַבְדֵיכֶ֖ם (and your⁺ menservants), וְאַמְהֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (and your⁺ maidservants), וְהַלֵּוִי֙ (and the Levite) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who is) בְּשַֽׁעֲרֵיכֶ֔ם (within your⁺ gates) כִּ֣י (since) אֵ֥ין (no) ל֛וֹ (he has) חֵ֥לֶק (portion) וְנַחֲלָ֖ה (or inheritance) אִתְּכֶֽם׃ (with you⁺).

13  הִשָּׁ֣מֶר (Take heed) לְךָ֔ (to yourself) פֶּֽן־ (that) תַּעֲלֶ֖ה (you do not offer) עֹלֹתֶ֑יךָ (your burnt offerings) בְּכָל־ (in every) מָק֖וֹם (place) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּרְאֶֽה׃ (you see). 14  כִּ֣י (Indeed) אִם־ (rather) בַּמָּק֞וֹם (in the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יִבְחַ֤ר (chooses) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) בְּאַחַ֣ד (in one) שְׁבָטֶ֔יךָ (of your tribes), שָׁ֖ם (there) תַּעֲלֶ֣ה (you shall offer) עֹלֹתֶ֑יךָ (your burnt offerings), וְשָׁ֣ם (and there) תַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה (you shall do) כֹּ֛ל (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) מְצַוֶּֽךָּ׃ (command you).

15  רַק֩ (Nevertheless) בְּכָל־ (whatever) אַוַּ֨ת (desires) נַפְשְׁךָ֜ (your soul), תִּזְבַּ֣ח׀ (you may slaughter) וְאָכַלְתָּ֣ (and eat) בָשָׂ֗ר (flesh) כְּבִרְכַּ֨ת (according to the blessing) יְהוָ֧ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ (your God) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָֽתַן־ (He has given) לְךָ֖ (you) בְּכָל־ (within all) שְׁעָרֶ֑יךָ (your gates). הַטָּמֵ֤א (The unclean) וְהַטָּהוֹר֙ (and the clean) יֹאכְלֶ֔נּוּ (may eat of it) כַּצְּבִ֖י (as of the gazelle), וְכָאַיָּֽל׃ (or as if and alike the deer). 16  רַ֥ק (Only) הַדָּ֖ם (the blood) לֹ֣א (not) תֹאכֵ֑לוּ (you⁺ shall eat); עַל־ (on) הָאָ֥רֶץ (the earth) תִּשְׁפְּכֶ֖נּוּ (you shall pour it) כַּמָּֽיִם׃ (like the water).

17  לֹֽא־ (Not) תוּכַ֞ל (you must) לֶאֱכֹ֣ל (eat) בִּשְׁעָרֶ֗יךָ (within your gates) מַעְשַׂ֤ר (the tithe) דְּגָֽנְךָ֙ (of your grain), וְתִֽירֹשְׁךָ֣ (or your new wine), וְיִצְהָרֶ֔ךָ (or your oil), וּבְכֹרֹ֥ת (or of the firstborn) בְּקָרְךָ֖ (of your herd) וְצֹאנֶ֑ךָ (or your flock), וְכָל־ (or of any) נְדָרֶ֙יךָ֙ (of your offerings) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תִּדֹּ֔ר (you vow), וְנִדְבֹתֶ֖יךָ (or of your freewill offerings), וּתְרוּמַ֥ת (or of the contribution) יָדֶֽךָ׃ (of your hand). 18  כִּ֡י (Indeed) אִם־ (rather) לִפְנֵי֩ (before the face of) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) תֹּאכְלֶ֗נּוּ (you must eat them) בַּמָּקוֹם֙ (in the place) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִבְחַ֜ר (chooses) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶיךָ֮ (your God) בּוֹ֒ (in it)— אַתָּ֨ה (you), וּבִנְךָ֤ (and your son), וּבִתֶּ֙ךָ֙ (and your daughter), וְעַבְדְּךָ֣ (and your manservant), וַאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ (and your maidservant), וְהַלֵּוִ֖י (and the Levite) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who is) בִּשְׁעָרֶ֑יךָ (within your gates); וְשָׂמַחְתָּ֗ (and you shall rejoice) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) בְּכֹ֖ל (in all to which) מִשְׁלַ֥ח (you put) יָדֶֽךָ׃ (your hands). 19  הִשָּׁ֣מֶר (Take heed) לְךָ֔ (to yourself) פֶּֽן־ (that) תַּעֲזֹ֖ב (you do not forsake) אֶת־ (-) הַלֵּוִ֑י (the Levite) כָּל־ (as long as) יָמֶ֖יךָ (you live) עַל־ (in) אַדְמָתֶֽךָ׃ס (your land).

20  כִּֽי־ (When) יַרְחִיב֩ (enlarges) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֥יךָ (your God) אֶֽת־ (-) גְּבֽוּלְךָ֮ (your border) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) דִּבֶּר־ (He has promised) לָךְ֒ (you), וְאָמַרְתָּ֙ (and you say), אֹכְלָ֣ה (Let me eat) בָשָׂ֔ר (flesh), כִּֽי־ (because) תְאַוֶּ֥ה (you long) נַפְשְׁךָ֖ (-) לֶאֱכֹ֣ל (to eat) בָּשָׂ֑ר (flesh), בְּכָל־ (of all) אַוַּ֥ת (the desire) נַפְשְׁךָ֖ (of your soul) תֹּאכַ֥ל (you may eat) בָּשָֽׂר׃ (flesh). 21  כִּֽי־ (If) יִרְחַ֨ק (is too far) מִמְּךָ֜ (from you) הַמָּק֗וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (where) יִבְחַ֜ר (chooses) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶיךָ֮ (your God) לָשׂ֣וּם (to put) שְׁמ֣וֹ (His Name) שָׁם֒ (there), וְזָבַחְתָּ֞ (and you may slaughter) מִבְּקָרְךָ֣ (from your herd) וּמִצֹּֽאנְךָ֗ (and from your flock) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that which) נָתַ֤ן (has given) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְךָ֔ (to you) כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) צִוִּיתִ֑ךָ (I have commanded you), וְאָֽכַלְתָּ֙ (and you may eat) בִּשְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ (within your gates) בְּכֹ֖ל (all) אַוַּ֥ת (the desire) נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃ (of your heart). 22  אַ֗ךְ (Indeed), כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) יֵאָכֵ֤ל (are eaten) אֶֽת־ (-) הַצְּבִי֙ (the gazelle) וְאֶת־ (and) הָ֣אַיָּ֔ל (the deer), כֵּ֖ן (so) תֹּאכְלֶ֑נּוּ (you may eat them). הַטָּמֵא֙ (The unclean) וְהַטָּה֔וֹר (and the clean) יַחְדָּ֖ו (alike) יֹאכְלֶֽנּוּ׃ (may eat them). 23  רַ֣ק (Only) חֲזַ֗ק (be sure) לְבִלְתִּי֙ (not) אֲכֹ֣ל (that you do eat) הַדָּ֔ם (the blood), כִּ֥י (for) הַדָּ֖ם (the blood) ה֣וּא (is) הַנָּ֑פֶשׁ (the life), וְלֹא־ (and not) תֹאכַ֥ל (you may eat) הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ (the life) עִם־ (with) הַבָּשָֽׂר׃ (the flesh). 24  לֹ֖א (Not) תֹּאכְלֶ֑נּוּ (you shall eat it); עַל־ (on) הָאָ֥רֶץ (the earth) תִּשְׁפְּכֶ֖נּוּ (you shall pour it) כַּמָּֽיִם׃ (like the water). 25  לֹ֖א (Not) תֹּאכְלֶ֑נּוּ (you shall eat it), לְמַ֨עַן (that) יִיטַ֤ב (it may go well) לְךָ֙ (with you) וּלְבָנֶ֣יךָ (and with your sons) אַחֲרֶ֔יךָ (after you) כִּֽי־ (when) תַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (you do) הַיָּשָׁ֖ר (what is right) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

26  רַ֧ק (Only) קָֽדָשֶׁ֛יךָ (the holy things) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יִהְי֥וּ (are) לְךָ֖ (to you), וּנְדָרֶ֑יךָ (and your vowed offerings), תִּשָּׂ֣א (you shall take) וּבָ֔אתָ (and go) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּק֖וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יִבְחַ֥ר (chooses) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 27  וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ (And you shall offer) עֹלֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ (your burnt offerings), הַבָּשָׂ֣ר (the flesh) וְהַדָּ֔ם (and the blood), עַל־ (on) מִזְבַּ֖ח (the altar) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God). וְדַם־ (And the blood) זְבָחֶ֗יךָ (of your sacrifices) יִשָּׁפֵךְ֙ (shall be poured out) עַל־ (on) מִזְבַּח֙ (the altar) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God), וְהַבָּשָׂ֖ר (and the flesh) תֹּאכֵֽל׃ (you shall eat). 28  שְׁמֹ֣ר (Observe) וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֗ (and obey) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (words) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) מְצַוֶּ֑ךָּ (command you), לְמַעַן֩ (that) יִיטַ֨ב (it may go well) לְךָ֜ (with you) וּלְבָנֶ֤יךָ (and with your sons) אַחֲרֶ֙יךָ֙ (after you) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָ֔ם (forever) כִּ֤י (when) תַעֲשֶׂה֙ (you do what is) הַטּ֣וֹב (good) וְהַיָּשָׁ֔ר (and right) בְּעֵינֵ֖י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ס (your God).

A Warning against Idolatry
(Deuteronomy 4:15–31; Ezekiel 6:1–7)

29  כִּֽי־ (When) יַכְרִית֩ (cuts off) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) אֶת־ (-) הַגּוֹיִ֗ם (the nations) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אַתָּ֥ה (you) בָא־ (go) שָׁ֛מָּה (there) לָרֶ֥שֶׁת (to dispossess) אוֹתָ֖ם (-) מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ (from before you), וְיָרַשְׁתָּ֣ (and you displace) אֹתָ֔ם (them) וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֖ (and dwell) בְּאַרְצָֽם׃ (in their land), 30  הִשָּׁ֣מֶר (take heed) לְךָ֗ (to yourself) פֶּן־ (that) תִּנָּקֵשׁ֙ (you are not ensnared) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם (to follow them) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) הִשָּׁמְדָ֣ם (they are destroyed) מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ (from before you), וּפֶן־ (that) תִּדְרֹ֨שׁ (you do not inquire) לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶ֜ם (after their gods), לֵאמֹ֨ר (saying), אֵיכָ֨ה (How) יַעַבְד֜וּ (did serve) הַגּוֹיִ֤ם (nations) הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם (their gods)? וְאֶעֱשֶׂה־ (And will do) כֵּ֖ן (likewise) גַּם־ (also) אָֽנִי׃ (I).

31  לֹא־ (Not) תַעֲשֶׂ֣ה (you shall do) כֵ֔ן (thus) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God), כִּי֩ (for) כָּל־ (every) תּוֹעֲבַ֨ת (abomination) יְהוָ֜ה (to YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) שָׂנֵ֗א (He hates), עָשׂוּ֙ (they have done) לֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם (to their gods). כִּ֣י (For) גַ֤ם (even) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵיהֶם֙ (their sons) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם (daughters) יִשְׂרְפ֥וּ (they burn) בָאֵ֖שׁ (in the fire) לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃ (to their gods).

32  אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (the whole) הַדָּבָ֗ר (thing) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whatever) אָנֹכִי֙ (I) מְצַוֶּ֣ה (command) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺), אֹת֥וֹ (-) תִשְׁמְר֖וּ (be careful) לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת (to observe it). לֹא־ (Not) תֹסֵ֣ף (you shall add) עָלָ֔יו (to it), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִגְרַ֖ע (take away) מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃פ (from it).
