Obedience and Discipline
(Deuteronomy 4:1–14)

1 וְאָ֣הַבְתָּ֔ (And you shall love) אֵ֖ת (-) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God), וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֣ (and keep) מִשְׁמַרְתּ֗וֹ (His charge), וְחֻקֹּתָ֧יו (and His statutes), וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֛יו (and His ordinances), וּמִצְוֺתָ֖יו (and His commandments), כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ (the days).

2 וִֽידַעְתֶּם֮ (And know) הַיּוֹם֒ (today); כִּ֣י׀ (that) לֹ֣א (it is not) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ children) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) לֹֽא־ (not) יָדְעוּ֙ (have known), וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and who) לֹא־ (not) רָא֔וּ (have seen) אֶת־ (-) מוּסַ֖ר (the discipline) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God), אֶת־ (-) גָּדְל֕וֹ (His greatness), אֶת־ (-) יָדוֹ֙ (and hand), הַחֲזָקָ֔ה (His mighty) וּזְרֹע֖וֹ (and arm) הַנְּטוּיָֽה׃ (His outstretched),

3 וְאֶת־ (and) אֹֽתֹתָיו֙ (His signs) וְאֶֽת־ (and) מַעֲשָׂ֔יו (His acts) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (He did) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt) לְפַרְעֹ֥ה (to Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) וּלְכָל־ (and to all) אַרְצֽוֹ׃ (his land),

4 וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and what) עָשָׂה֩ (He did) לְחֵ֨יל (to the army) מִצְרַ֜יִם (of Egypt), לְסוּסָ֣יו (to their horses), וּלְרִכְבּ֗וֹ (and their chariots)— אֲשֶׁ֨ר (how) הֵצִ֜יף (He caused to flow) אֶת־ (-) מֵ֤י (the waters) יַם־ (of the Sea) סוּף֙ (Red) עַל־ (upon) פְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (them them) בְּרָדְפָ֖ם (as they pursued) אַחֲרֵיכֶ֑ם (you⁺), וַיְאַבְּדֵ֣ם (and how has destroyed them) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this),

5 וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and what) עָשָׂ֛ה (He did) לָכֶ֖ם (for you⁺) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness) עַד־ (until) בֹּאֲכֶ֖ם (you⁺ came) עַד־ (to) הַמָּק֥וֹם (the place) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

6 וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר (And what) עָשָׂ֜ה (He did) לְדָתָ֣ן (to Dathan) וְלַאֲבִירָ֗ם (and Abiram) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) אֱלִיאָב֮ (of Eliab) בֶּן־ (son) רְאוּבֵן֒ (of Reuben)— אֲשֶׁ֨ר (how) פָּצְתָ֤ה (opened) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the earth) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֔יהָ (its mouth) וַתִּבְלָעֵ֥ם (and swallowed them up) וְאֶת־ (and) בָּתֵּיהֶ֖ם (their houses) וְאֶת־ (and) אָהֳלֵיהֶ֑ם (their tents) וְאֵ֤ת (and) כָּל־ (every) הַיְקוּם֙ (living thing) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בְּרַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם (was at their feet) בְּקֶ֖רֶב (in the midst) כָּל־ (of all) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

7 כִּ֤י (But) עֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ eyes) הָֽרֹאֹ֔ת (have seen) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה (act) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) הַגָּדֹ֑ל (great) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that) עָשָֽׂה׃ (He did).

(Joshua 1:1–9)

8 וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙ (And you⁺ shall keep) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) הַמִּצְוָ֔ה (commandment) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (that) אָנֹכִ֥י (I) מְצַוְּךָ֖ (command you) הַיּ֑וֹם (today), לְמַ֣עַן (that) תֶּחֶזְק֗וּ (you⁺ may be strong) וּבָאתֶם֙ (and go in) וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֣ם (and possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) אַתֶּ֛ם (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֥ים (are passing over) שָׁ֖מָּה (there) לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ (to possess it),

9 וּלְמַ֨עַן (and so that) תַּאֲרִ֤יכוּ (you⁺ may prolong) יָמִים֙ (your days) עַל־ (in) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) נִשְׁבַּ֨ע (swore) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ fathers) לָתֵ֥ת (to give) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) וּלְזַרְעָ֑ם (and to their seed), אֶ֛רֶץ (a land) זָבַ֥ת (flowing with) חָלָ֖ב (milk) וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ס (and honey).

10 כִּ֣י (For) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אַתָּ֤ה (you) בָא־ (are going in) שָׁ֙מָּה֙ (there) לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ (to possess), לֹ֣א (not) כְאֶ֤רֶץ (like the land) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) הִ֔וא (it is), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) יְצָאתֶ֖ם (you⁺ have come) מִשָּׁ֑ם (from), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (where) תִּזְרַע֙ (you sowed) אֶֽת־ (-) זַרְעֲךָ֔ (your seed) וְהִשְׁקִ֥יתָ (and watered it) בְרַגְלְךָ֖ (by foot) כְּגַ֥ן (as for a garden) הַיָּרָֽק׃ (of herbs).

11 וְהָאָ֗רֶץ (And the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אַתֶּ֜ם (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֥ים (are passing over) שָׁ֙מָּה֙ (there) לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ (to possess) אֶ֥רֶץ (is a land) הָרִ֖ים (of hills) וּבְקָעֹ֑ת (and valleys)— לִמְטַ֥ר (from the rain) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (of the heavens) תִּשְׁתֶּה־ (it drinks) מָּֽיִם׃ (water)—

12 אֶ֕רֶץ (a land) אֲשֶׁר־ (for which) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) דֹּרֵ֣שׁ (cares); אֹתָ֑הּ (-) תָּמִ֗יד (are always) עֵינֵ֨י (the eyes) יְהוָ֤ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) בָּ֔הּ (on it) מֵֽרֵשִׁית֙ (from the beginning) הַשָּׁנָ֔ה (of the year) וְעַ֖ד (and to) אַחֲרִ֥ית (the very end) שָׁנָֽה׃ס (of the year).

13 וְהָיָ֗ה (And it shall come to pass), אִם־ (if) שָׁמֹ֤עַ (listening) תִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ (you⁺ listen) אֶל־ (to) מִצְוֺתַ֔י (My commandments) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) מְצַוֶּ֥ה (am commanding) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) הַיּ֑וֹם (today), לְאַהֲבָ֞ה (to love) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ God), וּלְעָבְד֔וֹ (and to serve Him) בְּכָל־ (with all) לְבַבְכֶ֖ם (your⁺ heart) וּבְכָל־ (and with all) נַפְשְׁכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ soul),

14 וְנָתַתִּ֧י (then I will give) מְטַֽר־ (the rain for) אַרְצְכֶ֛ם (your⁺ land) בְּעִתּ֖וֹ (in its season), יוֹרֶ֣ה (the early rain) וּמַלְק֑וֹשׁ (and the latter rain), וְאָסַפְתָּ֣ (that you may gather in) דְגָנֶ֔ךָ (your grain) וְתִֽירֹשְׁךָ֖ (and your new wine) וְיִצְהָרֶֽךָ׃ (and your oil).

15 וְנָתַתִּ֛י (And I will give) עֵ֥שֶׂב (grass) בְּשָׂדְךָ֖ (in your fields) לִבְהֶמְתֶּ֑ךָ (for your livestock), וְאָכַלְתָּ֖ (that you may eat) וְשָׂבָֽעְתָּ׃ (and be satisfied).

16 הִשָּֽׁמְר֣וּ (Take heed) לָכֶ֔ם (to yourselves) פֶּ֥ן (lest) יִפְתֶּ֖ה (be deceived) לְבַבְכֶ֑ם (your⁺ heart), וְסַרְתֶּ֗ם (and you⁺ turn aside) וַעֲבַדְתֶּם֙ (and serve) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֔ים (other) וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֖ם (and worship) לָהֶֽם׃ (them).

17 וְחָרָ֨ה (Be kindled) אַף־ (the anger) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) בָּכֶ֗ם (against you⁺), וְעָצַ֤ר (and He shut up) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (the heavens) וְלֹֽא־ (so that not) יִהְיֶ֣ה (there is) מָטָ֔ר (rain), וְהָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (and the land) לֹ֥א (not) תִתֵּ֖ן (yield) אֶת־ (-) יְבוּלָ֑הּ (produce), וַאֲבַדְתֶּ֣ם (and you⁺ perish) מְהֵרָ֗ה (quickly) מֵעַל֙ (from) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַטֹּבָ֔ה (good) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺).

Remember God’s Words

18 וְשַׂמְתֶּם֙ (And you⁺ shall place) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָרַ֣י (words of mine) אֵ֔לֶּה (these) עַל־ (in) לְבַבְכֶ֖ם (your⁺ heart) וְעַֽל־ (and in) נַפְשְׁכֶ֑ם (your⁺ soul), וּקְשַׁרְתֶּ֨ם (and bind) אֹתָ֤ם (them) לְאוֹת֙ (as a sign) עַל־ (on) יֶדְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ hands), וְהָי֥וּ (and they shall be) לְטוֹטָפֹ֖ת (as frontlets) בֵּ֥ין (between) עֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ eyes).

19 וְלִמַּדְתֶּ֥ם (And you⁺ shall teach) אֹתָ֛ם (them) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵיכֶ֖ם (to your⁺ children), לְדַבֵּ֣ר (speaking) בָּ֑ם (of them) בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ֤ (in your sitting) בְּבֵיתֶ֙ךָ֙ (in your house), וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ֣ (and in your walking) בַדֶּ֔רֶךְ (in the way), וּֽבְשָׁכְבְּךָ֖ (and in your lying down), וּבְקוּמֶֽךָ׃ (and in your rising up).

20 וּכְתַבְתָּ֛ם (And you shall write them) עַל־ (on) מְזוּז֥וֹת (the doorposts) בֵּיתֶ֖ךָ (of your house) וּבִשְׁעָרֶֽיךָ׃ (and on your gates),

21 לְמַ֨עַן (that) יִרְבּ֤וּ (may be multiplied) יְמֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ days) וִימֵ֣י (and the days) בְנֵיכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ children) עַ֚ל (in) הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נִשְׁבַּ֧ע (swore) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (to your⁺ fathers) לָתֵ֣ת (to give) לָהֶ֑ם (to them), כִּימֵ֥י (as the days) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (of the heavens) עַל־ (are above) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ס (the earth).

22 כִּי֩ (For) אִם־ (if) שָׁמֹ֨ר (keeping) תִּשְׁמְר֜וּן (you⁺ keep) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַמִּצְוָ֣ה (the command) הַזֹּ֗את (this) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) מְצַוֶּ֥ה (am commanding) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) לַעֲשֹׂתָ֑הּ (to do), לְאַהֲבָ֞ה (to love) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ God), לָלֶ֥כֶת (to walk) בְּכָל־ (in all) דְּרָכָ֖יו (His ways), וּלְדָבְקָה־ (and to hold fast) בֽוֹ׃ (to Him),

23 וְהוֹרִ֧ישׁ (then will drive out) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִ֥ם (nations) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) מִלִּפְנֵיכֶ֑ם (from before you⁺), וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֣ם (and you⁺ will dispossess) גּוֹיִ֔ם (nations) גְּדֹלִ֥ים (greater) וַעֲצֻמִ֖ים (and mightier) מִכֶּֽם׃ (than yourselves).

24 כָּל־ (Every) הַמָּק֗וֹם (place) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (where) תִּדְרֹ֧ךְ (treads) כַּֽף־ (the sole) רַגְלְכֶ֛ם (of your⁺ foot) בּ֖וֹ (in it) לָכֶ֣ם (to you⁺) יִהְיֶ֑ה (shall be)— מִן־ (from) הַמִּדְבָּ֨ר (the wilderness) וְהַלְּבָנ֜וֹן (and Lebanon), מִן־ (from) הַנָּהָ֣ר (the river), נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָ֗ת (Euphrates), וְעַד֙ (and to) הַיָּ֣ם (the Sea) הָֽאַחֲר֔וֹן (Western)— יִהְיֶ֖ה (it shall be) גְּבֻלְכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ territory).

25 לֹא־ (Not) יִתְיַצֵּ֥ב (shall be able to stand) אִ֖ישׁ (man) בִּפְנֵיכֶ֑ם (against you⁺). פַּחְדְּכֶ֨ם (The terror of you⁺) וּמֽוֹרַאֲכֶ֜ם (and the fear of you⁺) יִתֵּ֣ן׀ (will put) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ God) עַל־ (upon) פְּנֵ֤י (the face) כָל־ (of all) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) תִּדְרְכוּ־ (you⁺ tread) בָ֔הּ (in it), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (He has said) לָכֶֽם׃ס (to you⁺).

A Blessing and a Curse

26 רְאֵ֗ה (See), אָנֹכִ֛י (I) נֹתֵ֥ן (set) לִפְנֵיכֶ֖ם (before you⁺) הַיּ֑וֹם (today) בְּרָכָ֖ה (a blessing) וּקְלָלָֽה׃ (and a curse)—

27 אֶֽת־ (-) הַבְּרָכָ֑ה (the blessing) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (if) תִּשְׁמְע֗וּ (you⁺ listen) אֶל־ (to) מִצְוֺת֙ (the commandments) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) מְצַוֶּ֥ה (command) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today),

28 וְהַקְּלָלָ֗ה (and the curse), אִם־ (if) לֹ֤א (not) תִשְׁמְעוּ֙ (you⁺ listen) אֶל־ (to) מִצְוֺת֙ (the commandments) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God) וְסַרְתֶּ֣ם (and turn aside) מִן־ (from) הַדֶּ֔רֶךְ (the way) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) מְצַוֶּ֥ה (command) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) הַיּ֑וֹם (today), לָלֶ֗כֶת (to go) אַחֲרֵ֛י (after) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֖ים (other) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) יְדַעְתֶּֽם׃ס (you⁺ have known).

29 וְהָיָ֗ה (And it shall come to pass), כִּ֤י (when) יְבִֽיאֲךָ֙ (has brought you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אַתָּ֥ה (you) בָא־ (are going in) שָׁ֖מָּה (there) לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ (to possess), וְנָתַתָּ֤ה (that you shall put) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּרָכָה֙ (the blessing) עַל־ (on) הַ֣ר (Mount) גְּרִזִ֔ים (Gerizim) וְאֶת־ (and) הַקְּלָלָ֖ה (the curse) עַל־ (on) הַ֥ר (Mount) עֵיבָֽל׃ (Ebal).

30 הֲלֹא־ (Are not) הֵ֜מָּה (these) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (on the other side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן (of the Jordan), אַֽחֲרֵי֙ (toward) דֶּ֚רֶךְ (the way) מְב֣וֹא (of the going in) הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ (of the sun), בְּאֶ֙רֶץ֙ (in the land) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (of the Canaanite) הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב (dwelling) בָּעֲרָבָ֑ה (in the plain) מ֚וּל (opposite) הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל (Gilgal) אֵ֖צֶל (beside) אֵלוֹנֵ֥י (the Oaks) מֹרֶֽה׃ (of Moreh)?

31 כִּ֤י (For) אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֣ים (are passing over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (the Jordan) לָבֹא֙ (to go in) לָרֶ֣שֶׁת (to possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ God) נֹתֵ֣ן (is giving) לָכֶ֑ם (to you⁺), וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֥ם (and you⁺ will possess) אֹתָ֖הּ (it) וִֽישַׁבְתֶּם־ (and dwell) בָּֽהּ׃ (in it).

32 וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֣ם (And you⁺ shall be careful) לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת (to observe) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַֽחֻקִּ֖ים (the statutes) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֑ים (ordinances) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) נֹתֵ֥ן (set) לִפְנֵיכֶ֖ם (before you⁺) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today).
