An Exhortation to Obedience
(Deuteronomy 11:1–7)

1  וְעַתָּ֣ה (And now) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (O Israel), שְׁמַ֤ע (listen) אֶל־ (to) הַֽחֻקִּים֙ (the statutes) וְאֶל־ (and) הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים (and ordinances) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָֽנֹכִ֛י (I) מְלַמֵּ֥ד (teach) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת (to observe), לְמַ֣עַן (that) תִּֽחְי֗וּ (you⁺ may live) וּבָאתֶם֙ (and go in) וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֣ם (and possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ fathers) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺). 2  לֹ֣א (Not) תֹסִ֗פוּ (you⁺ shall add) עַל־ (to) הַדָּבָר֙ (the word) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) אָנֹכִי֙ (I) מְצַוֶּ֣ה (command) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִגְרְע֖וּ (take) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (from it), לִשְׁמֹ֗ר (that you may keep) אֶת־ (-) מִצְוֺת֙ (the commandments) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) מְצַוֶּ֥ה (command) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺).

3  עֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ (Your⁺ eyes) הָֽרֹאֹ֔ת (have seen) אֵ֛ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) עָשָׂ֥ה (did) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּבַ֣עַל (at Baal-) פְּע֑וֹר (peor), כִּ֣י (for) כָל־ (all) הָאִ֗ישׁ (the men) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) הָלַךְ֙ (walked) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) בַֽעַל־ (Baal-) פְּע֔וֹר (Peor) הִשְׁמִיד֛וֹ (has destroyed) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃ (from among you). 4  וְאַתֶּם֙ (And you⁺), הַדְּבֵקִ֔ים (the ones clinging) בַּיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God), חַיִּ֥ים (are alive) כֻּלְּכֶ֖ם (all of you⁺) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today).

5  רְאֵ֣ה׀ (See) לִמַּ֣דְתִּי (I have taught) אֶתְכֶ֗ם (you⁺) חֻקִּים֙ (statutes) וּמִשְׁפָּטִ֔ים (and ordinances) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוַּ֖נִי (commanded me) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֑י (my God), לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (that you should act) כֵּ֔ן (accordingly) בְּקֶ֣רֶב (in the midst) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אַתֶּ֛ם (you⁺) בָּאִ֥ים (are going) שָׁ֖מָּה (there) לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ (to possess it). 6  וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֮ (Therefore, be careful) וַעֲשִׂיתֶם֒ (and observe them), כִּ֣י (for) הִ֤וא (that is) חָכְמַתְכֶם֙ (your⁺ wisdom) וּבִ֣ינַתְכֶ֔ם (and your⁺ understanding) לְעֵינֵ֖י (in the eyes) הָעַמִּ֑ים (of the peoples) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) יִשְׁמְע֗וּן (will hear) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַחֻקִּ֣ים (the statutes) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) וְאָמְר֗וּ (and say), רַ֚ק (Surely) עַם־ (a people) חָכָ֣ם (wise) וְנָב֔וֹן (and understanding) הַגּ֥וֹי (nation) הַגָּד֖וֹל (great) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this is).

7  כִּ֚י (For) מִי־ (what) ג֣וֹי (nation is) גָּד֔וֹל (great) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) ל֥וֹ (has) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (a god) קְרֹבִ֣ים (near) אֵלָ֑יו (to it) כַּיהוָ֣ה (as YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ (our God is to us) בְּכָּל־ (in all that) קָרְאֵ֖נוּ (we call) אֵלָֽיו׃ (upon Him). 8  וּמִי֙ (And what) גּ֣וֹי (nation is) גָּד֔וֹל (great) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) ל֛וֹ (has) חֻקִּ֥ים (statutes) וּמִשְׁפָּטִ֖ים (and ordinances) צַדִּיקִ֑ם (righteous) כְּכֹל֙ (according to all) הַתּוֹרָ֣ה (the law) הַזֹּ֔את (this) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) נֹתֵ֥ן (set) לִפְנֵיכֶ֖ם (before you⁺) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (this day)?

9  רַ֡ק (Only) הִשָּׁ֣מֶר (take heed) לְךָ֩ (to yourself) וּשְׁמֹ֨ר (and keep) נַפְשְׁךָ֜ (yourself) מְאֹ֗ד (diligently), פֶּן־ (lest) תִּשְׁכַּ֨ח (you forget) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֜ים (the things) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) רָא֣וּ (have seen) עֵינֶ֗יךָ (your eyes), וּפֶן־ (and lest) יָס֙וּרוּ֙ (they depart) מִלְּבָ֣בְךָ֔ (from your heart) כֹּ֖ל (all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) חַיֶּ֑יךָ (of your life); וְהוֹדַעְתָּ֥ם (and teach them) לְבָנֶ֖יךָ (to your sons) וְלִבְנֵ֥י (and to the sons) בָנֶֽיךָ׃ (of your sons). 10  י֗וֹם (The day) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָמַ֜דְתָּ (you stood) לִפְנֵ֨י (before the face of) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶיךָ֮ (your God) בְּחֹרֵב֒ (in Horeb), בֶּאֱמֹ֨ר (when said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me), הַקְהֶל־ (Gather) לִי֙ (to Me) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֔ם (the people) וְאַשְׁמִעֵ֖ם (and I will make them hear) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָרָ֑י (My words), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִלְמְד֜וּן (they may learn) לְיִרְאָ֣ה (to fear) אֹתִ֗י (Me) כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִים֙ (the days) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) הֵ֤ם (they) חַיִּים֙ (live) עַל־ (on) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the earth), וְאֶת־ (and that) בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם (their sons) יְלַמֵּדֽוּן׃ (they may teach).

11  וַתִּקְרְב֥וּן (And you⁺ came near) וַתַּֽעַמְד֖וּן (and stood) תַּ֣חַת (under) הָהָ֑ר (of the mountain), וְהָהָ֞ר (and the mountain) בֹּעֵ֤ר (burned) בָּאֵשׁ֙ (with the fire) עַד־ (to) לֵ֣ב (the heart) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens) חֹ֖שֶׁךְ (with darkness), עָנָ֥ן (cloud), וַעֲרָפֶֽל׃ (and thick darkness), 12  וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר (and spoke) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (out of the midst) הָאֵ֑שׁ (of the fire). ק֤וֹל (The sound) דְּבָרִים֙ (of the words) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) שֹׁמְעִ֔ים (heard), וּתְמוּנָ֛ה (and form) אֵינְכֶ֥ם (not) רֹאִ֖ים (saw)— זוּלָתִ֥י (only) קֽוֹל׃ (a voice). 13  וַיַּגֵּ֨ד (And He declared) לָכֶ֜ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִית֗וֹ (His covenant), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) צִוָּ֤ה (He commanded) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת (to perform)— עֲשֶׂ֖רֶת (the Ten) הַדְּבָרִ֑ים (Words). וַֽיִּכְתְּבֵ֔ם (And He wrote them) עַל־ (on) שְׁנֵ֖י (two) לֻח֥וֹת (tablets) אֲבָנִֽים׃ (of stone).

14  וְאֹתִ֞י (And me) צִוָּ֤ה (commanded) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֔וא (that) לְלַמֵּ֣ד (to teach) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) חֻקִּ֖ים (statutes) וּמִשְׁפָּטִ֑ים (and ordinances), לַעֲשֹׂתְכֶ֣ם (that you⁺ might observe) אֹתָ֔ם (them) בָּאָ֕רֶץ (in the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אַתֶּ֛ם (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֥ים (are passing over) שָׁ֖מָּה (there) לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ (to possess).

A Warning against Idolatry
(Deuteronomy 12:29–32; Ezekiel 6:1–7)

15  וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם (And guard) מְאֹ֖ד (greatly) לְנַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ souls), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֤א (not) רְאִיתֶם֙ (you⁺ saw) כָּל־ (any) תְּמוּנָ֔ה (form) בְּי֗וֹם (when) דִּבֶּ֨ר (spoke) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֲלֵיכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) בְּחֹרֵ֖ב (at Horeb) מִתּ֥וֹךְ (out of the midst) הָאֵֽשׁ׃ (of the fire), 16  פֶּ֨ן־ (lest) תַּשְׁחִת֔וּן (you⁺ act corruptly) וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֥ם (and make) לָכֶ֛ם (for yourselves) פֶּ֖סֶל (a carved image) תְּמוּנַ֣ת (in the form) כָּל־ (of any) סָ֑מֶל (figure), תַּבְנִ֥ית (the likeness) זָכָ֖ר (of male) א֥וֹ (or) נְקֵבָֽה׃ (female)— 17  תַּבְנִ֕ית (the likeness) כָּל־ (of any) בְּהֵמָ֖ה (animal) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (on the earth), תַּבְנִית֙ (or the likeness) כָּל־ (of any) צִפּ֣וֹר (bird) כָּנָ֔ף (winged) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תָּע֖וּף (flies) בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (in the air), 18  תַּבְנִ֕ית (the likeness) כָּל־ (of anything) רֹמֵ֖שׂ (that creeps) בָּאֲדָמָ֑ה (on the ground), תַּבְנִ֛ית (or the likeness) כָּל־ (of any) דָּגָ֥ה (fish) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water) מִתַּ֥חַת (beneath) לָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

19  וּפֶן־ (And lest) תִּשָּׂ֨א (you lift up) עֵינֶ֜יךָ (your eyes) הַשָּׁמַ֗יְמָה (to the heavens) וְֽ֠רָאִיתָ (and you see) אֶת־ (-) הַשֶּׁ֨מֶשׁ (the sun) וְאֶת־ (and) הַיָּרֵ֜חַ (the moon) וְאֶת־ (and) הַכּֽוֹכָבִ֗ים (the stars)— כֹּ֚ל (all) צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens)— וְנִדַּחְתָּ֛ (and you feel driven) וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִ֥יתָ (and to worship) לָהֶ֖ם (them) וַעֲבַדְתָּ֑ם (and serve them), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) חָלַ֜ק (has given as a heritage) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) אֹתָ֔ם (-) לְכֹל֙ (to all) הָֽעַמִּ֔ים (the peoples) תַּ֖חַת (under) כָּל־ (whole) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (the heavens). 20  וְאֶתְכֶם֙ (And you⁺) לָקַ֣ח (has taken) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וַיּוֹצִ֥א (and brought) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (you⁺) מִכּ֥וּר (out of furnace) הַבַּרְזֶ֖ל (the iron), מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם (out of Egypt), לִהְי֥וֹת (to be) ל֛וֹ (His) לְעַ֥ם (people) נַחֲלָ֖ה (an inheritance), כַּיּ֥וֹם (as the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

21  וַֽיהוָ֥ה (And YHWH) הִתְאַנֶּף־ (was angry) בִּ֖י (with me) עַל־ (because) דִּבְרֵיכֶ֑ם (of your⁺ words), וַיִּשָּׁבַ֗ע (and He swore) לְבִלְתִּ֤י (that not) עָבְרִי֙ (I would pass over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (the Jordan), וּלְבִלְתִּי־ (that not) בֹא֙ (I would enter) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַטּוֹבָ֔ה (good) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לְךָ֖ (to you) נַחֲלָֽה׃ (as an inheritance). 22  כִּ֣י (But) אָנֹכִ֥י (I) מֵת֙ (must die) בָּאָ֣רֶץ (in the land) הַזֹּ֔את (this). אֵינֶ֥נִּי (I am not) עֹבֵ֖ר (passing over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (the Jordan), וְאַתֶּם֙ (and you⁺) עֹֽבְרִ֔ים (shall pass over) וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֕ם (and possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֥רֶץ (the land) הַטּוֹבָ֖ה (good) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this).

23  הִשָּׁמְר֣וּ (Take heed) לָכֶ֗ם (to yourselves), פֶּֽן־ (lest) תִּשְׁכְּחוּ֙ (you⁺ forget) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִ֤ית (the covenant) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) כָּרַ֖ת (He made) עִמָּכֶ֑ם (with you⁺), וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֨ם (and make) לָכֶ֥ם (for yourselves) פֶּ֙סֶל֙ (a carved image) תְּמ֣וּנַת (in the form) כֹּ֔ל (of anything) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) צִוְּךָ֖ (has forbidden you) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God). 24  כִּ֚י (For) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) אֵ֥שׁ (a fire) אֹכְלָ֖ה (consuming) ה֑וּא (is) אֵ֖ל (a God) קַנָּֽא׃פ (jealous).

25  כִּֽי־ (When) תוֹלִ֤יד (you beget) בָּנִים֙ (sons) וּבְנֵ֣י (and sons) בָנִ֔ים (of sons) וְנוֹשַׁנְתֶּ֖ם (and have grown old) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (in the land), וְהִשְׁחַתֶּ֗ם (and act corruptly) וַעֲשִׂ֤יתֶם (and make) פֶּ֙סֶל֙ (a carved image) תְּמ֣וּנַת (in the form) כֹּ֔ל (of anything), וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֥ם (and do) הָרַ֛ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָֽה־ (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) לְהַכְעִיסֽוֹ׃ (to provoke Him to anger), 26  הַעִידֹתִי֩ (I call to witness) בָכֶ֨ם (against you⁺) הַיּ֜וֹם (this day) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם (the heavens) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the earth) כִּֽי־ (that) אָבֹ֣ד (perishing) תֹּאבֵדוּן֮ (you⁺ will perish) מַהֵר֒ (quickly) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אַתֶּ֜ם (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֧ים (are passing over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֛ן (the Jordan) שָׁ֖מָּה (there) לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ (to possess). לֹֽא־ (Not) תַאֲרִיכֻ֤ן (you⁺ will prolong) יָמִים֙ (your⁺ days) עָלֶ֔יהָ (in it), כִּ֥י (but) הִשָּׁמֵ֖ד (being destroyed) תִּשָּׁמֵדֽוּן׃ (you⁺ will be destroyed).

27  וְהֵפִ֧יץ (And will scatter) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) בָּעַמִּ֑ים (among the peoples), וְנִשְׁאַרְתֶּם֙ (and you⁺ will be left) מְתֵ֣י (few) מִסְפָּ֔ר (in number) בַּגּוֹיִ֕ם (among the nations), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (where) יְנַהֵ֧ג (will drive) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) שָֽׁמָּה׃ (there). 28  וַעֲבַדְתֶּם־ (And you⁺ will serve) שָׁ֣ם (there) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (gods)— מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה (the work) יְדֵ֣י (of the hands) אָדָ֑ם (of man)— עֵ֣ץ (wood) וָאֶ֔בֶן (and stone), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) לֹֽא־ (neither) יִרְאוּן֙ (see) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יִשְׁמְע֔וּן (hear) וְלֹ֥א (and not) יֹֽאכְל֖וּן (eat) וְלֹ֥א (and not) יְרִיחֻֽן׃ (smell).

29  וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּ֥ם (And you⁺ will seek) מִשָּׁ֛ם (from there) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God), וּמָצָ֑אתָ (and you will find Him) כִּ֣י (if) תִדְרְשֶׁ֔נּוּ (you seek Him) בְּכָל־ (with all) לְבָבְךָ֖ (your heart) וּבְכָל־ (and with all) נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃ (your soul). 30  בַּצַּ֣ר (When in distress) לְךָ֔ (you are) וּמְצָא֕וּךָ (and come upon you) כֹּ֖ל (all) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the things) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these) בְּאַחֲרִית֙ (in latter) הַיָּמִ֔ים (the days), וְשַׁבְתָּ֙ (and you turn) עַד־ (to) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֖ (and obey) בְּקֹלֽוֹ׃ (His voice)— 31  כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֤ל (a God) רַחוּם֙ (merciful) יְהוָ֣ה (is YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God); לֹ֥א (not) יַרְפְּךָ֖ (He will forsake you) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יַשְׁחִיתֶ֑ךָ (destroy you) וְלֹ֤א (and not) יִשְׁכַּח֙ (forget) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִ֣ית (the covenant) אֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ (of your fathers) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נִשְׁבַּ֖ע (He swore) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them).

Yahweh Alone Is God

32  כִּ֣י (For) שְׁאַל־ (ask) נָא֩ (now) לְיָמִ֨ים (concerning the days) רִֽאשֹׁנִ֜ים (that are past), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) הָי֣וּ (were) לְפָנֶ֗יךָ (before you) לְמִן־ (since) הַיּוֹם֙ (the day) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) בָּרָ֨א (created) אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ (God) אָדָם֙ (man) עַל־ (on) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth), וּלְמִקְצֵ֥ה (and from one end) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (of the heavens) וְעַד־ (and to) קְצֵ֣ה (the other) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens), הֲנִֽהְיָ֗ה (whether there has been) כַּדָּבָ֤ר (a thing) הַגָּדוֹל֙ (great) הַזֶּ֔ה (as this) א֖וֹ (or) הֲנִשְׁמַ֥ע (has there been heard) כָּמֹֽהוּ׃ (like it)? 33  הֲשָׁ֣מַֽע (Has heard) עָם֩ (a people) ק֨וֹל (the voice) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (of God) מְדַבֵּ֧ר (speaking) מִתּוֹךְ־ (out of the midst) הָאֵ֛שׁ (of the fire)— כַּאֲשֶׁר־ (as) שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ (you have heard) אַתָּ֖ה (yourself)— וַיֶּֽחִי׃ (and lived)? 34  א֣וֹ׀ (Or) הֲנִסָּ֣ה (has attempted) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (God) לָ֠בוֹא (to come) לָקַ֨חַת (to take) ל֣וֹ (for Himself) גוֹי֮ (a nation) מִקֶּ֣רֶב (from the midst) גּוֹי֒ (of another nation), בְּמַסֹּת֩ (by trials), בְּאֹתֹ֨ת (by signs), וּבְמוֹפְתִ֜ים (and by wonders), וּבְמִלְחָמָ֗ה (and by war), וּבְיָ֤ד (and by a hand) חֲזָקָה֙ (mighty) וּבִזְר֣וֹעַ (and an arm) נְטוּיָ֔ה (outstretched), וּבְמוֹרָאִ֖ים (and by terrors) גְּדֹלִ֑ים (great), כְּ֠כֹל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֨ה (did) לָכֶ֜ם (for you⁺) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ God) בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם (in Egypt) לְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (before your eyes)? 35  אַתָּה֙ (To you)

הָרְאֵ֣תָ (it was shown), לָדַ֔עַת (that you might know) כִּ֥י (that) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), ה֣וּא (He) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (is God); אֵ֥ין (there is none) ע֖וֹד (other) מִלְבַדּֽוֹ׃ (besides Him).

36  מִן־ (From) הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם (the heavens) הִשְׁמִֽיעֲךָ֥ (He let you hear) אֶת־ (-) קֹל֖וֹ (His voice), לְיַסְּרֶ֑ךָּ (that He might instruct you), וְעַל־ (and on) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the earth) הֶרְאֲךָ֙ (He showed you) אֶת־ (-) אִשּׁ֣וֹ (His fire) הַגְּדוֹלָ֔ה (great), וּדְבָרָ֥יו (and His words) שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ (you heard) מִתּ֥וֹךְ (out of the midst) הָאֵֽשׁ׃ (of the fire). 37  וְתַ֗חַת (And) כִּ֤י (because) אָהַב֙ (He loved) אֶת־ (-) אֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ (your fathers), וַיִּבְחַ֥ר (therefore He chose) בְּזַרְע֖וֹ (their seed) אַחֲרָ֑יו (after them), וַיּוֹצִֽאֲךָ֧ (and He brought you out) בְּפָנָ֛יו (with His face) בְּכֹח֥וֹ (with His power) הַגָּדֹ֖ל (mighty) מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ (from Egypt), 38  לְהוֹרִ֗ישׁ (to dispossess) גּוֹיִ֛ם (nations) גְּדֹלִ֧ים (greater) וַעֲצֻמִ֛ים (and mightier) מִמְּךָ֖ (than you) מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ (from before you) לַהֲבִֽיאֲךָ֗ (to bring you in), לָֽתֶת־ (to give) לְךָ֧ (to you) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצָ֛ם (their land) נַחֲלָ֖ה (as an inheritance), כַּיּ֥וֹם (as on the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

39  וְיָדַעְתָּ֣ (Therefore know) הַיּ֗וֹם (this day) וַהֲשֵׁבֹתָ֮ (and return it) אֶל־ (to) לְבָבֶךָ֒ (your heart), כִּ֤י (that) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) ה֣וּא (He) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (is God) בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם (in the heavens) מִמַּ֔עַל (above) וְעַל־ (and on) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the earth) מִתָּ֑חַת (beneath); אֵ֖ין (there is no) עֽוֹד׃ (other). 40  וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֞ (And you shall keep) אֶת־ (-) חֻקָּ֣יו (His statutes) וְאֶת־ (and) מִצְוֺתָ֗יו (His commandments) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אָנֹכִ֤י (I) מְצַוְּךָ֙ (command you) הַיּ֔וֹם (today), אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) יִיטַ֣ב (it may go well) לְךָ֔ (with you) וּלְבָנֶ֖יךָ (and with your children) אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ (after you), וּלְמַ֨עַן (that) תַּאֲרִ֤יךְ (you may prolong) יָמִים֙ (your days) עַל־ (in) הַ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לְךָ֖ (to you)— כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃פ (the days).

41  אָ֣ז (Then) יַבְדִּ֤יל (set apart) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (three) עָרִ֔ים (cities) בְּעֵ֖בֶר (on this side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (of the Jordan) מִזְרְחָ֖ה (toward the rising) שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃ (of the sun), 42  לָנֻ֨ס (for to flee) שָׁ֜מָּה (there) רוֹצֵ֗חַ (the manslayer) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) יִרְצַ֤ח (kills) אֶת־ (-) רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ (his neighbor) בִּבְלִי־ (without) דַ֔עַת (knowing), וְה֛וּא (and he) לֹא־ (without) שֹׂנֵ֥א (having hated) ל֖וֹ (him) מִתְּמ֣וֹל (from yesterday) שִׁלְשׁ֑וֹם (and the day before yesterday),

וְנָ֗ס (that by fleeing) אֶל־ (to) אַחַ֛ת (one) מִן־ (-) הֶעָרִ֥ים (of the cities) הָאֵ֖ל (these) וָחָֽי׃ (and he might live): 43  אֶת־ (-) בֶּ֧צֶר (Bezer) בַּמִּדְבָּ֛ר (in the wilderness) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (on) הַמִּישֹׁ֖ר (the plateau), לָרֻֽאוּבֵנִ֑י (for the Reubenite); וְאֶת־ (and) רָאמֹ֤ת (Ramoth) בַּגִּלְעָד֙ (in Gilead), לַגָּדִ֔י (for the Gadite); וְאֶת־ (and) גּוֹלָ֥ן (Golan) בַּבָּשָׁ֖ן (in Bashan), לַֽמְנַשִּֽׁי׃ (for the Manassite).

47  וַיִּֽירְשׁ֨וּ (And they took possession) אֶת־ (of) אַרְצ֜וֹ (his land) וְאֶת־ (and) אֶ֣רֶץ׀ (the land) ע֣וֹג (of Og) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֗ן (of Bashan)— שְׁנֵי֙ (two) מַלְכֵ֣י (kings) הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who were) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (on this side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (of the Jordan) מִזְרַ֖ח (toward the rising) שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃ (of the sun)— 48  מֵעֲרֹעֵ֞ר (from Aroer) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which is) עַל־ (on) שְׂפַת־ (the bank) נַ֧חַל (of the River) אַרְנֹ֛ן (Arnon), וְעַד־ (and to) הַ֥ר (Mount) שִׂיאֹ֖ן (Siyon), ה֥וּא (that is) חֶרְמֽוֹן׃ (Hermon), 49  וְכָל־ (and all) הָ֨עֲרָבָ֜ה (the plain) עֵ֤בֶר (on the side) הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ (of the Jordan) מִזְרָ֔חָה (east), וְעַ֖ד (and as far as) יָ֣ם (the Sea) הָעֲרָבָ֑ה (of the Arabah), תַּ֖חַת (below) אַשְׁדֹּ֥ת (the slopes) הַפִּסְגָּֽה׃פ (of Pisgah).
