The Defeat of Og
(Numbers 21:31–35)

1  וַנֵּ֣פֶן (And we turned) וַנַּ֔עַל (and went up) דֶּ֖רֶךְ (the road to) הַבָּשָׁ֑ן (Bashan), וַיֵּצֵ֣א (and came out) עוֹג֩ (Og) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֨ן (of Bashan) לִקְרָאתֵ֜נוּ (against us), ה֧וּא (he) וְכָל־ (and all) עַמּ֛וֹ (his people), לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (to battle) אֶדְרֶֽעִי׃ (at Edrei). 2  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֵלַי֙ (to me) אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֣א (do fear) אֹת֔וֹ (him) כִּ֣י (for) בְיָדְךָ֞ (into your hand) נָתַ֧תִּי (I have delivered) אֹת֛וֹ (him) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) עַמּ֖וֹ (his people) וְאֶת־ (and) אַרְצ֑וֹ (his land), וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ (and you shall do) לּ֔וֹ (to him) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשִׂ֗יתָ (you did) לְסִיחֹן֙ (to Sihon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (dwelt) בְּחֶשְׁבּֽוֹן׃ (in Heshbon).

3  וַיִּתֵּן֩ (And delivered) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֜ינוּ (our God) בְּיָדֵ֗נוּ (into our hands) גַּ֛ם (also) אֶת־ (-) ע֥וֹג (Og) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֖ן (of Bashan), וְאֶת־ (and with) כָּל־ (all) עַמּ֑וֹ (his people). וַנַּכֵּ֕הוּ (And we struck him) עַד־ (until) בִּלְתִּ֥י (not) הִשְׁאִֽיר־ (had remaining) ל֖וֹ (he) שָׂרִֽיד׃ (survivors).

4  וַנִּלְכֹּ֤ד (And we took) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) עָרָיו֙ (his cities) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֔וא (that). לֹ֤א (Not) הָֽיְתָה֙ (there was) קִרְיָ֔ה (a city) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לֹא־ (not) לָקַ֖חְנוּ (we did take) מֵֽאִתָּ֑ם (from them). שִׁשִּׁ֥ים (Sixty) עִיר֙ (cities)— כָּל־ (all) חֶ֣בֶל (the region) אַרְגֹּ֔ב (of Argob), מַמְלֶ֥כֶת (the kingdom) ע֖וֹג (of Og) בַּבָּשָֽׁן׃ (in Bashan). 5  כָּל־ (All) אֵ֜לֶּה (these) עָרִ֧ים (cities) בְּצֻר֛וֹת (were fortified with) חוֹמָ֥ה (walls) גְבֹהָ֖ה (high), דְּלָתַ֣יִם (gates) וּבְרִ֑יחַ (and bars), לְבַ֛ד (besides) מֵעָרֵ֥י (villages) הַפְּרָזִ֖י (unwalled) הַרְבֵּ֥ה (many) מְאֹֽד׃ (very). 6  וַנַּחֲרֵ֣ם (And we devoted to destruction) אוֹתָ֔ם (them) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשִׂ֔ינוּ (we did) לְסִיחֹ֖ן (to Sihon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) חֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן (of Heshbon), הַחֲרֵם֙ (utterly destroying) כָּל־ (every) עִ֣יר (city), מְתִ֔ם (the men), הַנָּשִׁ֖ים (the women), וְהַטָּֽף׃ (and the children).

7  וְכָל־ (And all) הַבְּהֵמָ֛ה (the livestock) וּשְׁלַ֥ל (and the spoil) הֶעָרִ֖ים (of the cities) בַּזּ֥וֹנוּ (we plundered) לָֽנוּ׃ (for ourselves).

8  וַנִּקַּ֞ח (And we took) בָּעֵ֤ת (at the time) הַהִוא֙ (that) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) מִיַּ֗ד (from the hand) שְׁנֵי֙ (of the two) מַלְכֵ֣י (kings) הָאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who were) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (on this side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (of the Jordan), מִנַּ֥חַל (from the River) אַרְנֹ֖ן (Arnon) עַד־ (to) הַ֥ר (Mount) חֶרְמֽוֹן׃ (Hermon)— 9  צִידֹנִ֛ים (the Sidonians) יִקְרְא֥וּ (call) לְחֶרְמ֖וֹן (Hermon) שִׂרְיֹ֑ן (Sirion) וְהָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י (and the Amorite) יִקְרְאוּ־ (call) ל֖וֹ (it) שְׂנִֽיר׃ (Senir)— 10  כֹּ֣ל׀ (all) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) הַמִּישֹׁ֗ר (of the plain), וְכָל־ (and all) הַגִּלְעָד֙ (Gilead), וְכָל־ (and all) הַבָּשָׁ֔ן (Bashan), עַד־ (as far as) סַלְכָ֖ה (Salcah) וְאֶדְרֶ֑עִי (and Edrei), עָרֵ֛י (cities) מַמְלֶ֥כֶת (of the kingdom) ע֖וֹג (of Og) בַּבָּשָֽׁן׃ (in Bashan).

11  כִּ֣י (For) רַק־ (only) ע֞וֹג (Og) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֗ן (of Bashan) נִשְׁאַר֮ (remained) מִיֶּ֣תֶר (of the remnant) הָרְפָאִים֒ (of the Rephaim); הִנֵּ֤ה (behold), עַרְשׂוֹ֙ (his bed was) עֶ֣רֶשׂ (an bed) בַּרְזֶ֔ל (iron). הֲלֹ֣ה (Is not) הִ֔וא (it) בְּרַבַּ֖ת (in Rabbah of) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) עַמּ֑וֹן (of Ammon)? תֵּ֧שַׁע (Nine) אַמּ֣וֹת (cubits is) אָרְכָּ֗הּ (its length) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) אַמּ֛וֹת (cubits) רָחְבָּ֖הּ (its width) בְּאַמַּת־ (by the cubit) אִֽישׁ׃ (standard).

12  וְאֶת־ (And) הָאָ֧רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֛את (this) יָרַ֖שְׁנוּ ( we possessed) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֑וא (that), מֵעֲרֹעֵ֞ר (from Aroer) אֲשֶׁר־ (which is) עַל־ (by) נַ֣חַל (the River) אַרְנֹ֗ן (Arnon), וַחֲצִ֤י (and half) הַֽר־ (the mountains) הַגִּלְעָד֙ (of Gilead) וְעָרָ֔יו (and its cities), נָתַ֕תִּי (I gave) לָרֻֽאוּבֵנִ֖י (to the Reubenite) וְלַגָּדִֽי׃ (and the Gadite).

13  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) הַגִּלְעָ֤ד (of Gilead) וְכָל־ (and all) הַבָּשָׁן֙ (Bashan), מַמְלֶ֣כֶת (the kingdom) ע֔וֹג (of Og), נָתַ֕תִּי (I gave) לַחֲצִ֖י (to the half) שֵׁ֣בֶט (tribe) הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה (of Manasseh). כֹּ֣ל (All) חֶ֤בֶל (the region) הָֽאַרְגֹּב֙ (of Argob), לְכָל־ (with all) הַבָּשָׁ֔ן (Bashan), הַה֥וּא (that) יִקָּרֵ֖א (was called) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) רְפָאִֽים׃ (of the Rephaim). 14  יָאִ֣יר (Jair) בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה (of Manasseh) לָקַח֙ (took) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) חֶ֣בֶל (the region) אַרְגֹּ֔ב (of Argob) עַד־ (as far as) גְּב֥וּל (the border) הַגְּשׁוּרִ֖י (of the Geshurite) וְהַמַּֽעֲכָתִ֑י (and the Maachathite), וַיִּקְרָא֩ (and called) אֹתָ֨ם (them) עַל־ (after) שְׁמ֤וֹ (his own name), אֶת־ (-) הַבָּשָׁן֙ (Bashan) חַוֺּ֣ת (Havvoth-) יָאִ֔יר (jair) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

15  וּלְמָכִ֖יר (And to Machir) נָתַ֥תִּי (I gave) אֶת־ (-) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (Gilead). 16  וְלָרֻאוּבֵנִ֨י (And to the Reubenite) וְלַגָּדִ֜י (and the Gadite) נָתַ֤תִּי (I gave) מִן־ (from) הַגִּלְעָד֙ (Gilead) וְעַד־ (and as far as) נַ֣חַל (the River) אַרְנֹ֔ן (Arnon) תּ֥וֹךְ (the middle) הַנַּ֖חַל (of the valley), וּגְבֻ֑ל (and the border) וְעַד֙ (and to) יַבֹּ֣ק (Jabbok) הַנַּ֔חַל (the River), גְּב֖וּל (the border) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) עַמּֽוֹן׃ (of Ammon). 17  וְהָֽעֲרָבָ֖ה (And the plain) וְהַיַּרְדֵּ֣ן (and the Jordan) וּגְבֻ֑ל (and the border) מִכִּנֶּ֗רֶת (from Chinnereth) וְעַ֨ד (and as far as) יָ֤ם (the Sea) הָֽעֲרָבָה֙ (of the Arabah), יָ֣ם (Sea) הַמֶּ֔לַח (the Salt), תַּ֛חַת (below) אַשְׁדֹּ֥ת (the slopes) הַפִּסְגָּ֖ה (of Pisgah) מִזְרָֽחָה׃ (to the east).

18  וָאֲצַ֣ו (And I commanded) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִ֖וא (that), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ God) נָתַ֨ן (has given) לָכֶ֜ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֤רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּאת֙ (this) לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ (to possess). חֲלוּצִ֣ים (Armed) תַּֽעַבְר֗וּ (you⁺ shall pass over) לִפְנֵ֛י (before) אֲחֵיכֶ֥ם (your⁺ brothers) בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) חָֽיִל׃ (of valor). 19  רַ֠ק (But) נְשֵׁיכֶ֣ם (your⁺ wives) וְטַפְּכֶם֮ (and your⁺ little ones) וּמִקְנֵכֶם֒ (and your⁺ livestock)— יָדַ֕עְתִּי (I know) כִּֽי־ (that) מִקְנֶ֥ה (livestock) רַ֖ב (much) לָכֶ֑ם (you⁺ have)— יֵֽשְׁבוּ֙ (shall stay) בְּעָ֣רֵיכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ cities) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָתַ֖תִּי (I have given) לָכֶֽם׃ (you⁺), 20  עַ֠ד (until) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יָנִ֨יחַ (has given rest) יְהוָ֥ה׀ (YHWH) לַֽאֲחֵיכֶם֮ (to your⁺ brothers) כָּכֶם֒ (as to you⁺), וְיָרְשׁ֣וּ (and possess) גַם־ (also) הֵ֔ם (they) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָהֶ֖ם (them) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (beyond) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (the Jordan). וְשַׁבְתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺ will return) אִ֚ישׁ (every man) לִֽירֻשָּׁת֔וֹ (to his inheritance), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָתַ֖תִּי (I have given) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺).

21  וְאֶת־ (And) יְהוֹשׁ֣וּעַ (Joshua) צִוֵּ֔יתִי (I commanded) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִ֖וא (that), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), עֵינֶ֣יךָ (Your eyes) הָרֹאֹ֗ת (have seen) אֵת֩ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָשָׂ֜ה (has done) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ God) לִשְׁנֵי֙ (to two) הַמְּלָכִ֣ים (kings) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these). כֵּֽן־ (Thus) יַעֲשֶׂ֤ה (will do) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְכָל־ (to all) הַמַּמְלָכ֔וֹת (the kingdoms) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (through which) אַתָּ֖ה (you) עֹבֵ֥ר (pass) שָֽׁמָּה׃ (there). 22  לֹ֖א (Not) תְִּירָא֑וּם (do fear them), כִּ֚י (for) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God) ה֖וּא (Himself) הַנִּלְחָ֥ם (fights) לָכֶֽם׃ס (for you⁺).

Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan
(Numbers 27:12–17)

23  וָאֶתְחַנַּ֖ן (And I pleaded) אֶל־ (with) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִ֖וא (that), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 24  אֲדֹנָ֣י (O Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH), אַתָּ֤ה (You) הַֽחִלּ֙וֹתָ֙ (have begun) לְהַרְא֣וֹת (to show) אֶֽת־ (-) עַבְדְּךָ֔ (Your servant) אֶ֨ת־ (-) גָּדְלְךָ֔ (Your greatness) וְאֶת־ (and) יָדְךָ֖ (Your hand) הַחֲזָקָ֑ה (mighty). אֲשֶׁ֤ר (For) מִי־ (what) אֵל֙ (god) בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם (is in the heavens) וּבָאָ֔רֶץ (or on the earth)— אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (does works) כְמַעֲשֶׂ֖יךָ (as Your works) וְכִגְבוּרֹתֶֽךָ׃ (and as Your mighty deeds)? 25  אֶעְבְּרָה־ (Let me pass over), נָּ֗א (please), וְאֶרְאֶה֙ (and see) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַטּוֹבָ֔ה (good) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that is) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (beyond) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (the Jordan), הָהָ֥ר (hill country) הַטּ֛וֹב (pleasant) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) וְהַלְּבָנֽוֹן׃ (and Lebanon).

26  וַיִּתְעַבֵּ֨ר (And was angry) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) בִּי֙ (with me) לְמַ֣עַנְכֶ֔ם (on your⁺ account), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמַ֖ע (He would listen) אֵלָ֑י (to me). וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֵלַי֙ (to me), רַב־ (Enough) לָ֔ךְ (of it). אַל־ (Not) תּ֗וֹסֶף (do add) דַּבֵּ֥ר (to speak) אֵלַ֛י (to Me) ע֖וֹד (anymore) בַּדָּבָ֥ר (of the matter) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 27  עֲלֵ֣ה׀ (Go up) רֹ֣אשׁ (to the top) הַפִּסְגָּ֗ה (of Pisgah) וְשָׂ֥א (and lift up) עֵינֶ֛יךָ (your eyes) יָ֧מָּה (toward the west), וְצָפֹ֛נָה (and the north), וְתֵימָ֥נָה (and the south), וּמִזְרָ֖חָה (and the east), וּרְאֵ֣ה (and look) בְעֵינֶ֑יךָ (with your eyes). כִּי־ (For) לֹ֥א (not) תַעֲבֹ֖ר (you shall pass over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֥ן (the Jordan) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 28  וְצַ֥ו (And command) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) וְחַזְּקֵ֣הוּ (and encourage him) וְאַמְּצֵ֑הוּ (and strengthen him), כִּי־ (for) ה֣וּא (he) יַעֲבֹ֗ר (shall go over) לִפְנֵי֙ (before) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), וְהוּא֙ (and he) יַנְחִ֣יל (to inherit) אוֹתָ֔ם (shall cause them) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּרְאֶֽה׃ (you will see).

29  וַנֵּ֣שֶׁב (And we stayed) בַּגָּ֔יְא (in the valley) מ֖וּל (opposite) בֵּ֥ית (Beth-) פְּעֽוֹר׃פ (peor).
