The Tribes East of the Jordan
(Deuteronomy 3:12–22; Joshua 13:8–14)
1 וּמִקְנֶ֣ה׀ (And livestock). רַ֗ב (Much) הָיָ֞ה (was) לִבְנֵ֧י (unto the sons) רְאוּבֵ֛ן (of Reuben) וְלִבְנֵי־ (and the sons) גָ֖ד (of Gad) עָצ֣וּם (numerous) מְאֹ֑ד (very), וַיִּרְא֞וּ (and they saw) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֤רֶץ (the land) יַעְזֵר֙ (of Jazer) וְאֶת־ (and) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) גִּלְעָ֔ד (of Gilead), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (that indeed) הַמָּק֖וֹם (the region was) מְק֥וֹם (a place for) מִקְנֶֽה׃ (livestock);
2 וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ (and came) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) גָ֖ד (of Gad) וּבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) רְאוּבֵ֑ן (of Reuben), וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ (and spoke) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses), וְאֶל־ (and to) אֶלְעָזָ֣ר (Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וְאֶל־ (and to) נְשִׂיאֵ֥י (the leaders) הָעֵדָ֖ה (of the congregation), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
3 עֲטָר֤וֹת (Ataroth), וְדִיבֹן֙ (and Dibon), וְיַעְזֵ֣ר (and Jazer), וְנִמְרָ֔ה (and Nimrah), וְחֶשְׁבּ֖וֹן (and Heshbon), וְאֶלְעָלֵ֑ה (and Elealeh), וּשְׂבָ֥ם (and Shebam), וּנְב֖וֹ (and Nebo), וּבְעֹֽן׃ (and Beon),
4 הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) הִכָּ֤ה (defeated) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) עֲדַ֣ת (the congregation) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אֶ֥רֶץ (a land for) מִקְנֶ֖ה (livestock) הִ֑וא (it is); וְלַֽעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (and your servants have) מִקְנֶֽה׃ס (livestock).
5 וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ (And they said), אִם־ (If) מָצָ֤אנוּ (we have found) חֵן֙ (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ (in your eyes), יֻתַּ֞ן (let be given) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֧רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֛את (this) לַעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (to your servants) לַאֲחֻזָּ֑ה (as a possession); אַל־ (not) תַּעֲבִרֵ֖נוּ (make us pass over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (the Jordan).
6 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) לִבְנֵי־ (to the sons) גָ֖ד (of Gad) וְלִבְנֵ֣י (and to the sons) רְאוּבֵ֑ן (of Reuben), הַאַֽחֵיכֶ֗ם (Shall your⁺ brothers) יָבֹ֙אוּ֙ (go) לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (to war) וְאַתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺) תֵּ֥שְׁבוּ (sit) פֹֽה׃ (here)?
7 וְלָ֣מָּה (And why) תְנוּאוּן (do you⁺ discourage) אֶת־ (-) לֵ֖ב (the heart) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) מֵֽעֲבֹר֙ (from going over) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֥ן (has given) לָהֶ֖ם (them) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).
8 כֹּ֥ה (Thus) עָשׂ֖וּ (did) אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ fathers) בְּשָׁלְחִ֥י (when I sent away) אֹתָ֛ם (them) מִקָּדֵ֥שׁ (from Kadesh-) בַּרְנֵ֖עַ (barnea) לִרְא֥וֹת (to see) אֶת־ (-) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land).
9 וַֽיַּעֲל֞וּ (And they went up) עַד־ (to) נַ֣חַל (the Valley) אֶשְׁכּ֗וֹל (of Eshcol) וַיִּרְאוּ֙ (and saw) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land), וַיָּנִ֕יאוּ (and they discouraged) אֶת־ (-) לֵ֖ב (the heart) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) לְבִלְתִּי־ (so as not) בֹא֙ (to go) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֥ן (had given) לָהֶ֖ם (them) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).
10 וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was kindled) אַ֥ף (the anger) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַה֑וּא (that), וַיִּשָּׁבַ֖ע (and He swore an oath), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
11 אִם־ (Surely none) יִרְא֨וּ (shall see) הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים (of the men) הָעֹלִ֣ים (who came up) מִמִּצְרַ֗יִם (from Egypt), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (of twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), אֵ֚ת (-) הָאֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (of which) נִשְׁבַּ֛עְתִּי (I swore) לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם (to Abraham), לְיִצְחָ֖ק (Isaac), וּֽלְיַעֲקֹ֑ב (and Jacob)— כִּ֥י (for) לֹא־ (not) מִלְא֖וּ (they have wholly) אַחֲרָֽי׃ (followed Me)—
12 בִּלְתִּ֞י (except) כָּלֵ֤ב (Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּה֙ (of Jephunneh) הַקְּנִזִּ֔י (the Kenizzite) וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (and Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֑וּן (of Nun); כִּ֥י (for) מִלְא֖וּ (they have wholly) אַחֲרֵ֥י (followed) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).
13 וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was kindled) אַ֤ף (the anger) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (against Israel), וַיְנִעֵם֙ (and He made them wander) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness) אַרְבָּעִ֖ים (forty) שָׁנָ֑ה (years), עַד־ (until) תֹּם֙ (the finishing) כָּל־ (of all) הַדּ֔וֹר (the generation) הָעֹשֶׂ֥ה (that had done) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
14 וְהִנֵּ֣ה (And behold), קַמְתֶּ֗ם (you⁺ have risen up) תַּ֚חַת (in place) אֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ fathers) תַּרְבּ֖וּת (a brood) אֲנָשִׁ֣ים (of men) חַטָּאִ֑ים (sinful) לִסְפּ֣וֹת (to add) ע֗וֹד (still more) עַ֛ל (to) חֲר֥וֹן (the fierce) אַף־ (anger) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (against) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).
15 כִּ֤י (For if) תְשׁוּבֻן֙ (you⁺ turn away) מֵֽאַחֲרָ֔יו (from following Him), וְיָסַ֣ף (and He will again) ע֔וֹד (once) לְהַנִּיח֖וֹ (leave them) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness), וְשִֽׁחַתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ will destroy) לְכָל־ (all) הָעָ֥ם (the people) הַזֶּֽה׃ס (this).
16 וַיִּגְּשׁ֤וּ (And they came near) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) וַ֣יֹּאמְר֔וּ (and said), גִּדְרֹ֥ת (Walls) צֹ֛אן (for sheep) נִבְנֶ֥ה (we will build) לְמִקְנֵ֖נוּ (for our livestock) פֹּ֑ה (here), וְעָרִ֖ים (and cities) לְטַפֵּֽנוּ׃ (for our little ones),
17 וַאֲנַ֜חְנוּ (and we) נֵחָלֵ֣ץ (will be armed), חֻשִׁ֗ים (hurrying) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), עַ֛ד (until) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אִם־ (when) הֲבִֽיאֹנֻ֖ם (we have brought them) אֶל־ (to) מְקוֹמָ֑ם (their place), וְיָשַׁ֤ב (and will dwell) טַפֵּ֙נוּ֙ (our little ones) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in the cities) הַמִּבְצָ֔ר (of defense) מִפְּנֵ֖י (because) יֹשְׁבֵ֥י (of the dwellers) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).
18 לֹ֥א (Not) נָשׁ֖וּב (we will return) אֶל־ (to) בָּתֵּ֑ינוּ (our homes) עַ֗ד (until) הִתְנַחֵל֙ (has received) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אִ֖ישׁ (each man) נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃ (his inheritance).
19 כִּ֣י (For) לֹ֤א (not) נִנְחַל֙ (we will inherit) אִתָּ֔ם (with them) מֵעֵ֥בֶר (on the other side) לַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן (of the Jordan) וָהָ֑לְאָה (and beyond), כִּ֣י (because) בָ֤אָה (has come) נַחֲלָתֵ֙נוּ֙ (our inheritance) אֵלֵ֔ינוּ (to us) מֵעֵ֥בֶר (on this side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן (of the Jordan) מִזְרָֽחָה׃פ (at the rising).
20 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֲלֵיהֶם֙ (to them) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), אִֽם־ (If) תַּעֲשׂ֖וּן (you⁺ do) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), אִם־ (if) תֵּחָֽלְצ֛וּ (you⁺ arm yourselves) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (for the war),
21 וְעָבַ֨ר (and pass over) לָכֶ֧ם (your⁺ men) כָּל־ (all) חָל֛וּץ (armed) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן (the Jordan) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) עַ֧ד (until) הוֹרִישׁ֛וֹ (He has driven out) אֶת־ (-) אֹיְבָ֖יו (His enemies) מִפָּנָֽיו׃ (from before Him),
22 וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֨ה (and is subdued) הָאָ֜רֶץ (the land) לִפְנֵ֤י (before the face of) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), וְאַחַ֣ר (then afterward) תָּשֻׁ֔בוּ (you⁺ may return) וִהְיִיתֶ֧ם (and be) נְקִיִּ֛ים (blameless) מֵיְהוָ֖ה (before YHWH) וּמִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (and before Israel). וְ֠הָיְתָה (And shall be) הָאָ֨רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֥את (this) לָכֶ֛ם (your⁺) לַאֲחֻזָּ֖ה (possession) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).
23 וְאִם־ (But if) לֹ֤א (not) תַעֲשׂוּן֙ (you⁺ do) כֵּ֔ן (do so), הִנֵּ֥ה (behold), חֲטָאתֶ֖ם (you⁺ have sinned) לַיהוָ֑ה (against YHWH); וּדְעוּ֙ (and know) חַטַּאתְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ sin), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּמְצָ֖א (it will find out) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺).
24 בְּנֽוּ־ (Build) לָכֶ֤ם (for yourselves) עָרִים֙ (cities) לְטַפְּכֶ֔ם (for your⁺ little ones) וּגְדֵרֹ֖ת (and folds) לְצֹנַאֲכֶ֑ם (for your⁺ sheep), וְהַיֹּצֵ֥א (and what has proceeded) מִפִּיכֶ֖ם (out of your⁺ mouth), תַּעֲשֽׂוּ׃ (you⁺ shall do).
25 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And spoke) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) גָד֙ (of Gad) וּבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) רְאוּבֵ֔ן (of Reuben) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ (Your servants) יַעֲשׂ֔וּ (will do) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord) מְצַוֶּֽה׃ (is commanding).
26 טַפֵּ֣נוּ (Our little ones), נָשֵׁ֔ינוּ (our wives), מִקְנֵ֖נוּ (our flocks), וְכָל־ (and all) בְּהֶמְתֵּ֑נוּ (our livestock) יִֽהְיוּ־ (will be) שָׁ֖ם (there) בְּעָרֵ֥י (in the cities) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (of Gilead).
27 וַעֲבָדֶ֨יךָ (And your servants) יַֽעַבְר֜וּ (will pass over), כָּל־ (every man) חֲל֥וּץ (armed) צָבָ֛א (for war), לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה (to battle), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord) דֹּבֵֽר׃ (has spoken).
28 וַיְצַ֤ו (And gave orders) לָהֶם֙ (concerning them) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) אֵ֚ת (-) אֶלְעָזָ֣ר (to Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וְאֵ֖ת (and) יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (to Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֑וּן (of Nun), וְאֶת־ (and) רָאשֵׁ֛י (to the chief) אֲב֥וֹת (fathers) הַמַּטּ֖וֹת (of the tribes) לִבְנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).
29 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them), אִם־ (If) יַעַבְר֣וּ (pass over) בְנֵי־ (the sons) גָ֣ד (of Gad) וּבְנֵי־ (and the sons) רְאוּבֵ֣ן׀ (of Reuben) אִ֠תְּכֶם (with you⁺) אֶֽת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֞ן (the Jordan), כָּל־ (every man) חָל֤וּץ (armed) לַמִּלְחָמָה֙ (for battle) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֥ה (and is subdued) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם (before you⁺) וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם (and you⁺ shall give) לָהֶ֛ם (them) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) הַגִּלְעָ֖ד (of Gilead) לַאֲחֻזָּֽה׃ (as a possession).
30 וְאִם־ (But if) לֹ֧א (not) יַֽעַבְר֛וּ (they do pass over) חֲלוּצִ֖ים (armed) אִתְּכֶ֑ם (with you⁺), וְנֹֽאחֲז֥וּ (and they shall have possessions) בְתֹכְכֶ֖ם (in your⁺ midst) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan).
31 וַיַּֽעֲנ֧וּ (And answered) בְנֵי־ (the sons) גָ֛ד (of Gad) וּבְנֵ֥י (and the sons) רְאוּבֵ֖ן (of Reuben), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אֵת֩ (-) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) דִּבֶּ֧ר (has said) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (your servants), כֵּ֥ן (so) נַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ (we will do).
32 נַ֣חְנוּ (We) נַעֲבֹ֧ר (will pass over) חֲלוּצִ֛ים (armed) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶ֣רֶץ (into the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan); וְאִתָּ֙נוּ֙ (and with us) אֲחֻזַּ֣ת (is the possession) נַחֲלָתֵ֔נוּ (of our inheritance) מֵעֵ֖בֶר (on this side) לַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (of the Jordan).
33 וַיִּתֵּ֣ן (And gave) לָהֶ֣ם׀ (to them) מֹשֶׁ֡ה (Moses), לִבְנֵי־ (to the sons) גָד֩ (of Gad), וְלִבְנֵ֨י (and to the sons) רְאוּבֵ֜ן (of Reuben), וְלַחֲצִ֣י׀ (and to the half) שֵׁ֣בֶט׀ (tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (of Manasseh) בֶן־ (son) יוֹסֵ֗ף (of Joseph), אֶת־ (-) מַמְלֶ֙כֶת֙ (the kingdom) סִיחֹן֙ (of Sihon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite), וְאֶת־ (and) מַמְלֶ֔כֶת (the kingdom) ע֖וֹג (of Og) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֑ן (of Bashan), הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) לְעָרֶ֙יהָ֙ (with its cities) בִּגְבֻלֹ֔ת (within the borders), עָרֵ֥י (the cities) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the country) סָבִֽיב׃ (surrounding).
34 וַיִּבְנ֣וּ (And built) בְנֵי־ (the sons) גָ֔ד (of Gad) אֶת־ (-) דִּיבֹ֖ן (Dibon), וְאֶת־ (and) עֲטָרֹ֑ת (Ataroth), וְאֵ֖ת (and) עֲרֹעֵֽר׃ (Aroer),
35 וְאֶת־ (and) עַטְרֹ֥ת (Atroth-) שׁוֹפָ֛ן (shophan), וְאֶת־ (and) יַעְזֵ֖ר (Jazer), וְיָגְבֳּהָֽה׃ (and Jogbehah),
36 וְאֶת־ (and) בֵּ֥ית (Beth-) נִמְרָ֖ה (nimrah), וְאֶת־ (and) בֵּ֣ית (Beth-) הָרָ֑ן (haran), עָרֵ֥י (cities) מִבְצָ֖ר (fortified) וְגִדְרֹ֥ת (and folds for) צֹֽאן׃ (sheep).
37 וּבְנֵ֤י (And the sons) רְאוּבֵן֙ (of Reuben) בָּנ֔וּ (built) אֶת־ (-) חֶשְׁבּ֖וֹן (Heshbon), וְאֶת־ (and) אֶלְעָלֵ֑א (Elealeh), וְאֵ֖ת (and) קִרְיָתָֽיִם׃ (Kiriathaim),
38 וְאֶת־ (and) נְב֞וֹ (Nebo), וְאֶת־ (and) בַּ֧עַל (Baal-) מְע֛וֹן (meon), מֽוּסַבֹּ֥ת (being changed) שֵׁ֖ם (the names), וְאֶת־ (and) שִׂבְמָ֑ה (Sibmah). וַיִּקְרְא֣וּ (And they gave) בְשֵׁמֹ֔ת (by these names) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֥וֹת (the names) הֶעָרִ֖ים (to the cities) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) בָּנֽוּ׃ (they built).
39 וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ (And went) בְּנֵ֨י (the sons) מָכִ֧יר (of Machir) בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁ֛ה (of Manasseh) גִּלְעָ֖דָה (to Gilead), וַֽיִּלְכְּדֻ֑הָ (and took it) וַיּ֖וֹרֶשׁ (and dispossessed) אֶת־ (-) הָאֱמֹרִ֥י (the Amorite) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) בָּֽהּ׃ (in it).
40 וַיִּתֵּ֤ן (And gave) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶת־ (-) הַגִּלְעָ֔ד (Gilead) לְמָכִ֖יר (to Machir) בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה (of Manasseh), וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב (and he dwelt) בָּֽהּ׃ (in it).
41 וְיָאִ֤יר (And Jair) בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁה֙ (of Manasseh) הָלַ֔ךְ (went) וַיִּלְכֹּ֖ד (and captured) אֶת־ (-) חַוֺּתֵיהֶ֑ם (their tent villages) וַיִּקְרָ֥א (and called) אֶתְהֶ֖ן (them) חַוֺּ֥ת (Havvoth-) יָאִֽיר׃ (jair).
42 וְנֹ֣בַח (And Nobah) הָלַ֔ךְ (went) וַיִּלְכֹּ֥ד (and took) אֶת־ (-) קְנָ֖ת (Kenath) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֹתֶ֑יהָ (its daughter-villages), וַיִּקְרָ֧א (and he called) לָ֦ה (it) נֹ֖בַח (Nobah) בִּשְׁמֽוֹ׃פ (after his own name).
