Forty-Two Journeys of the Israelites

1  אֵ֜לֶּה (These) מַסְעֵ֣י (are the journeys) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יָצְא֛וּ (went) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) לְצִבְאֹתָ֑ם (by their armies) בְּיַד־ (under the hand) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (of Moses) וְאַהֲרֹֽן׃ (and Aaron). 2  וַיִּכְתֹּ֨ב (And wrote down) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) מוֹצָאֵיהֶ֛ם (the starting points) לְמַסְעֵיהֶ֖ם (of their journeys) עַל־ (at) פִּ֣י (the mouth) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְאֵ֥לֶּה (and these are) מַסְעֵיהֶ֖ם (their journeys) לְמוֹצָאֵיהֶֽם׃ (according to their starting points).

3  וַיִּסְע֤וּ (And they departed) מֵֽרַעְמְסֵס֙ (from Rameses) בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ (in the month) הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן (first) בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֥ה (on the five) עָשָׂ֛ר (and tenth) י֖וֹם (day) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן (first), מִֽמָּחֳרַ֣ת (on the day after) הַפֶּ֗סַח (the Passover). יָצְא֤וּ (Went out) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) בְּיָ֣ד (with hand) רָמָ֔ה (held high) לְעֵינֵ֖י (before the eyes) כָּל־ (of all) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (the Egyptians). 4  וּמִצְרַ֣יִם (And for Egypt) מְקַבְּרִ֗ים (were burying) אֵת֩ (-) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (those whom) הִכָּ֧ה (had struck down) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בָּהֶ֖ם (among them), כָּל־ (all) בְּכ֑וֹר (the firstborn), וּבֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם (and on their gods) עָשָׂ֥ה (had executed) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) שְׁפָטִֽים׃ (judgments). 5  וַיִּסְע֥וּ (And set out) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) מֵרַעְמְסֵ֑ס (from Rameses) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּסֻכֹּֽת׃ (at Succoth).

6  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִסֻּכֹּ֑ת (from Succoth) וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ (and camped) בְאֵתָ֔ם (at Etham), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which is) בִּקְצֵ֥ה (on the edge) הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (of the wilderness).

7  וַיִּסְעוּ֙ (And they set out) מֵֽאֵתָ֔ם (from Etham) וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ (and turned back) עַל־ (to) פִּ֣י (Pi-) הַחִירֹ֔ת (hahiroth), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which is) עַל־ (upon) פְּנֵ֖י (the face) בַּ֣עַל (of Baal-) צְפ֑וֹן (zephon), וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and they camped) לִפְנֵ֥י (near) מִגְדֹּֽל׃ (Migdol).

8  וַיִּסְעוּ֙ (And they set out) מִפְּנֵ֣י (from) הַֽחִירֹ֔ת (Hahiroth), וַיַּֽעַבְר֥וּ (and passed through) בְתוֹךְ־ (in the midst) הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea) הַמִּדְבָּ֑רָה (into the wilderness), וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ (and went) דֶּ֣רֶךְ (a journey) שְׁלֹ֤שֶׁת (of three) יָמִים֙ (days) בְּמִדְבַּ֣ר (in the Wilderness) אֵתָ֔ם (of Etham), וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּמָרָֽה׃ (at Marah).

9  וַיִּסְעוּ֙ (And they set out) מִמָּרָ֔ה (from Marah) וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and came) אֵילִ֑מָה (to Elim), וּ֠בְאֵילִם (and at Elim were) שְׁתֵּ֣ים (two) עֶשְׂרֵ֞ה (and ten) עֵינֹ֥ת (springs) מַ֛יִם (of water) וְשִׁבְעִ֥ים (and seventy) תְּמָרִ֖ים (palm trees); וַיַּחֲנוּ־ (and they camped) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

10  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵאֵילִ֑ם (from Elim) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) עַל־ (by) יַם־ (the Sea) סֽוּף׃ (Red).

11  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִיַּם־ (from the Sea) ס֑וּף (Red) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּמִדְבַּר־ (in the Wilderness) סִֽין׃ (of Sin).

12  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִמִּדְבַּר־ (from the Wilderness) סִ֑ין (of Sin) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּדָפְקָֽה׃ (at Dophkah).

13  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִדָּפְקָ֑ה (from Dophkah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּאָלֽוּשׁ׃ (at Alush).

14  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵאָל֑וּשׁ (from Alush) וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ (and camped) בִּרְפִידִ֔ם (at Rephidim), וְלֹא־ (and not) הָ֨יָה (there was) שָׁ֥ם (there) מַ֛יִם (water) לָעָ֖ם (for the people) לִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃ (to drink).

15  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵרְפִידִ֑ם (from Rephidim) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר (in the Wilderness) סִינָֽי׃ (of Sinai).

16  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִמִּדְבַּ֣ר (from the Wilderness) סִינָ֑י (of Sinai) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּקִבְרֹ֥ת (at Kibroth-) הַֽתַּאֲוָֽה׃ (hattaavah).

17  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִקִּבְרֹ֣ת (from Kibroth-) הַֽתַּאֲוָ֑ה (hattaavah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בַּחֲצֵרֹֽת׃ (at Hazeroth).

18  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵחֲצֵרֹ֑ת (from Hazeroth) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּרִתְמָֽה׃ (at Rithmah).

19  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵרִתְמָ֑ה (from Rithmah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּרִמֹּ֥ן (at Rimmon-) פָּֽרֶץ׃ (perez).

20  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵרִמֹּ֣ן (from Rimmon-) פָּ֑רֶץ (perez) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּלִבְנָֽה׃ (at Libnah).

21  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִלִּבְנָ֑ה (from Libnah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּרִסָּֽה׃ (at Rissah).

22  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵרִסָּ֑ה (from Rissah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בִּקְהֵלָֽתָה׃ (at Kehelathah).

23  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִקְּהֵלָ֑תָה (from Kehelathah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּהַר־ (at Mount) שָֽׁפֶר׃ (Shepher).

24  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵֽהַר־ (from Mount) שָׁ֑פֶר (Shepher) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בַּחֲרָדָֽה׃ (at Haradah).

25  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵחֲרָדָ֑ה (from Haradah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּמַקְהֵלֹֽת׃ (at Makheloth).

26  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִמַּקְהֵלֹ֑ת (from Makheloth) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּתָֽחַת׃ (at Tahath).

27  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִתָּ֑חַת (from Tahath) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּתָֽרַח׃ (at Terah).

28  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִתָּ֑רַח (from Terah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּמִתְקָֽה׃ (at Mithkah).

29  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִמִּתְקָ֑ה (from Mithkah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּחַשְׁמֹנָֽה׃ (at Hashmonah).

30  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵֽחַשְׁמֹנָ֑ה (from Hashmonah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּמֹסֵרֽוֹת׃ (at Moserah).

31  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִמֹּסֵר֑וֹת (from Moserah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בִּבְנֵ֥י (at Bene-) יַעֲקָֽן׃ (jaakan).

32  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִבְּנֵ֣י (from Bene-) יַעֲקָ֑ן (jaakan) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּחֹ֥ר (at Hor-) הַגִּדְגָּֽד׃ (haggidgad).

33  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵחֹ֣ר (from Hor-) הַגִּדְגָּ֑ד (haggidgad) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּיָטְבָֽתָה׃ (at Jotbathah).

34  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִיָּטְבָ֑תָה (from Jotbathah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּעַבְרֹנָֽה׃ (at Abronah).

35  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵֽעַבְרֹנָ֑ה (from Abronah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּעֶצְי֥וֹן (at Ezion-) גָּֽבֶר׃ (geber).

36  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵעֶצְי֣וֹן (from Ezion-) גָּ֑בֶר (geber) וַיַּחֲנ֥וּ (and camped) בְמִדְבַּר־ (in the Wilderness) צִ֖ן (of Zin); הִ֥וא (it) קָדֵֽשׁ׃ (is Kadesh).

37  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִקָּדֵ֑שׁ (from Kadesh) וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ (and camped) בְּהֹ֣ר (at Hor) הָהָ֔ר (the Mount) בִּקְצֵ֖ה (on the boundary) אֶ֥רֶץ (of the land) אֱדֽוֹם׃ (of Edom). 38  וַיַּעַל֩ (And went up) אַהֲרֹ֨ן (Aaron) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) אֶל־ (to) הֹ֥ר (Hor) הָהָ֛ר (the Mount) עַל־ (at) פִּ֥י (the mouth) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), וַיָּ֣מָת (and died) שָׁ֑ם (there), בִּשְׁנַ֣ת (in year) הָֽאַרְבָּעִ֗ים (the fortieth) לְצֵ֤את (of the going out) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ (on the) הַחֲמִישִׁ֖י (Fifth) בְּאֶחָ֥ד (of the first) לַחֹֽדֶשׁ׃ (month). 39  וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן (And Aaron) בֶּן־ (was a son) שָׁלֹ֧שׁ (of three) וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים (and twenty) וּמְאַ֖ת (and a hundred) שָׁנָ֑ה (years) בְּמֹת֖וֹ (when he died) בְּהֹ֥ר (on Hor) הָהָֽר׃ס (the Mount).

40  וַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע (And heard) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (the Canaanite) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) עֲרָ֔ד (of Arad)— וְהֽוּא־ (and he) יֹשֵׁ֥ב (dwelt) בַּנֶּ֖גֶב (in the Negev) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan)— בְּבֹ֖א (of the coming) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 41  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵהֹ֣ר (from Hor) הָהָ֑ר (the Mount) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּצַלְמֹנָֽה׃ (at Zalmonah).

42  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִצַּלְמֹנָ֑ה (from Zalmonah) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּפוּנֹֽן׃ (at Punon).

43  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִפּוּנֹ֑ן (from Punon) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּאֹבֹֽת׃ (at Oboth).

44  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵאֹבֹ֑ת (from Oboth) וַֽיַּחֲנ֛וּ (and camped) בְּעִיֵּ֥י (at Iye-) הָעֲבָרִ֖ים (abarim) בִּגְב֥וּל (on the border) מוֹאָֽב׃ (of Moab).

45  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵעִיִּ֑ים (from Ijim) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּדִיבֹ֥ן (at Dibon-) גָּֽד׃ (gad).

46  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מִדִּיבֹ֣ן (from Dibon) גָּ֑ד (gad) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּעַלְמֹ֥ן (at Almon-) דִּבְלָתָֽיְמָה׃ (diblathaim).

47  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵעַלְמֹ֣ן (from Almon-) דִּבְלָתָ֑יְמָה (diblathaim) וַֽיַּחֲנ֛וּ (and camped) בְּהָרֵ֥י (in the mountains) הָעֲבָרִ֖ים (of the Abarim) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) נְבֽוֹ׃ (of Nebo).

48  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵהָרֵ֣י (from the mountains) הָעֲבָרִ֑ים (of the Abarim) וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ (and camped) בְּעַֽרְבֹ֣ת (in the plains) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab) עַ֖ל (by) יַרְדֵּ֥ן (the Jordan) יְרֵחֽוֹ׃ (near Jericho).

49  וַיַּחֲנ֤וּ (And they camped) עַל־ (by) הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ (the Jordan) מִבֵּ֣ית (from Beth-) הַיְשִׁמֹ֔ת (jeshimoth) עַ֖ד (to) אָבֵ֣ל (Abel-) הַשִּׁטִּ֑ים (shittim) בְּעַֽרְבֹ֖ת (in the plains) מוֹאָֽב׃ס (of Moab).

Instructions for Occupying Canaan

50  וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) בְּעַֽרְבֹ֣ת (in the plains) מוֹאָ֑ב (of Moab) עַל־ (by) יַרְדֵּ֥ן (the Jordan) יְרֵח֖וֹ (across from Jericho), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 51  דַּבֵּר֙ (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ (and say) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them): כִּ֥י (When) אַתֶּ֛ם (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֥ים (have crossed) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן (the Jordan) אֶל־ (into) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan), 52  וְה֨וֹרַשְׁתֶּ֜ם (and you⁺ shall drive out) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) יֹשְׁבֵ֤י (the dwellers) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (of the land) מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם (from before you⁺) וְאִ֨בַּדְתֶּ֔ם (and destroy) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) מַשְׂכִּיֹּתָ֑ם (their carved figures), וְאֵ֨ת (and) כָּל־ (all) צַלְמֵ֤י (images) מַסֵּֽכֹתָם֙ (their molten) תְּאַבֵּ֔דוּ (you⁺ shall destroy), וְאֵ֥ת (and) כָּל־ (all) בָּמֹתָ֖ם (their high places) תַּשְׁמִֽידוּ׃ (you⁺ shall demolish).

53  וְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּ֥ם (And you⁺ shall possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) וִֽישַׁבְתֶּם־ (and dwell) בָּ֑הּ (in it). כִּ֥י (For) לָכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) נָתַ֥תִּי (I have given) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) לָרֶ֥שֶׁת (to possess) אֹתָֽהּ׃ (-). 54  וְהִתְנַחַלְתֶּם֩ (And you⁺ shall inherit for yourselves) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֨רֶץ (the land) בְּגוֹרָ֜ל (by lot) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹֽתֵיכֶ֗ם (among your⁺ clans). לָרַ֞ב (To the larger) תַּרְבּ֤וּ (you⁺ shall give a larger) אֶת־ (-) נַחֲלָתוֹ֙ (inheritance), וְלַמְעַט֙ (and to the smaller) תַּמְעִ֣יט (you shall give a smaller) אֶת־ (-) נַחֲלָת֔וֹ (inheritance). אֶל֩ (To) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) יֵ֨צֵא (goes out) ל֥וֹ (to each one) שָׁ֛מָּה (there) הַגּוֹרָ֖ל (the lot) ל֣וֹ (unto him), יִהְיֶ֑ה (it shall be) לְמַטּ֥וֹת (according to the tribes) אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ fathers) תִּתְנֶחָֽלוּ׃ (you⁺ shall inherit).

55  וְאִם־ (But if) לֹ֨א (not) תוֹרִ֜ישׁוּ (you⁺ do drive out) אֶת־ (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) הָאָרֶץ֮ (of the land) מִפְּנֵיכֶם֒ (from before you⁺), וְהָיָה֙ (and it shall be) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תּוֹתִ֣ירוּ (you⁺ leave are) מֵהֶ֔ם (-) לְשִׂכִּים֙ (irritants) בְּעֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ eyes) וְלִצְנִינִ֖ם (and thorns) בְּצִדֵּיכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ sides), וְצָרֲר֣וּ (and they shall harass) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) עַל־ (in) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺) יֹשְׁבִ֥ים (dwell) בָּֽהּ׃ (in). 56  וְהָיָ֗ה (And it will come to pass that) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּמִּ֛יתִי (I thought) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) לָהֶ֖ם (to them), אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה (I will do) לָכֶֽם׃פ (to you⁺).
