The Boundaries of Canaan
(Genesis 15:8–21)

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  צַ֞ו (Command) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them): כִּֽי־ (When) אַתֶּ֥ם (you⁺) בָּאִ֖ים (come) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan), זֹ֣את (this is) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) תִּפֹּ֤ל (shall fall) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) בְּֽנַחֲלָ֔ה (as an inheritance)— אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) כְּנַ֖עַן (of Canaan) לִגְבֻלֹתֶֽיהָ׃ (to its boundaries):

3  וְהָיָ֨ה (And shall be) לָכֶ֧ם (your⁺) פְּאַת־ (border on) נֶ֛גֶב (the Negev) מִמִּדְבַּר־ (from the Wilderness) צִ֖ן (of Zin) עַל־ (along) יְדֵ֣י (the border) אֱד֑וֹם (of Edom), וְהָיָ֤ה (and shall extend) לָכֶם֙ (your⁺) גְּב֣וּל (border on) נֶ֔גֶב (the Negev) מִקְצֵ֥ה (to the end) יָם־ (of Sea) הַמֶּ֖לַח (the Salt) קֵֽדְמָה׃ (eastward). 4  וְנָסַ֣ב (And shall turn) לָכֶם֩ (your⁺) הַגְּב֨וּל (border) מִנֶּ֜גֶב (from the Negev) לְמַעֲלֵ֤ה (to the Ascent) עַקְרַבִּים֙ (of Akrabbim) וְעָ֣בַר (and continue) צִ֔נָה (to Zin), וְהָיָה (and will be) תּֽוֹצְאֹתָ֔יו (the going forth) מִנֶּ֖גֶב (from the Negev) לְקָדֵ֣שׁ (to Kadesh-) בַּרְנֵ֑עַ (barnea), וְיָצָ֥א (and it shall go on) חֲצַר־ (to Hazar-) אַדָּ֖ר (addar) וְעָבַ֥ר (and continue) עַצְמֹֽנָה׃ (to Azmon). 5  וְנָסַ֧ב (And shall turn) הַגְּב֛וּל (the border) מֵעַצְמ֖וֹן (from Azmon) נַ֣חְלָה (to the Brook) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וְהָי֥וּ (and will be) תוֹצְאֹתָ֖יו (its outer limits) הַיָּֽמָּה׃ (to the Sea).

6  וּגְב֣וּל (And as for the border) יָ֔ם (western) וְהָיָ֥ה (and shall be) לָכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) הַיָּ֥ם (the Sea) הַגָּד֖וֹל (Great) וּגְב֑וּל (and for a border); זֶֽה־ (this) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) לָכֶ֖ם (your⁺) גְּב֥וּל (border) יָֽם׃ (western).

7  וְזֶֽה־ (And this) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) לָכֶ֖ם (your⁺) גְּב֣וּל (border) צָפ֑וֹן (northern): מִן־ (From) הַיָּם֙ (the Sea) הַגָּדֹ֔ל (Great) תְּתָא֥וּ (you⁺ shall mark out) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) הֹ֥ר (to Hor) הָהָֽר׃ (the Mount). 8  מֵהֹ֣ר (From Hor) הָהָ֔ר (the Mount) תְּתָא֖וּ (you⁺ shall mark out) לְבֹ֣א (to Lebo) חֲמָ֑ת (hamath); וְהָי֛וּ (and shall be) תּוֹצְאֹ֥ת (the direction) הַגְּבֻ֖ל (of the border) צְדָֽדָה׃ (toward Zedad); 9  וְיָצָ֤א (and shall proceed) הַגְּבֻל֙ (the border) זִפְרֹ֔נָה (to Ziphron), וְהָי֥וּ (and it shall) תוֹצְאֹתָ֖יו (end) חֲצַ֣ר (at Hazar-) עֵינָ֑ן (enan). זֶֽה־ (This) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) לָכֶ֖ם (your⁺) גְּב֥וּל (the border of) צָפֽוֹן׃ (the north).

10  וְהִתְאַוִּיתֶ֥ם (And you⁺ shall mark out) לָכֶ֖ם (your⁺) לִגְב֣וּל (border) קֵ֑דְמָה (eastern) מֵחֲצַ֥ר (from Hazar-) עֵינָ֖ן (enan) שְׁפָֽמָה׃ (to Shepham), 11  וְיָרַ֨ד (and shall go down) הַגְּבֻ֧ל (the border) מִשְּׁפָ֛ם (from Shepham) הָרִבְלָ֖ה (to Riblah) מִקֶּ֣דֶם (on the east side) לָעָ֑יִן (of Ain), וְיָרַ֣ד (and shall go down) הַגְּב֔וּל (the border) וּמָחָ֛ה (and reach) עַל־ (to) כֶּ֥תֶף (the side) יָם־ (of the Sea) כִּנֶּ֖רֶת (of Chinnereth) קֵֽדְמָה׃ (eastern). 12  וְיָרַ֤ד (And shall go down) הַגְּבוּל֙ (the border) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔נָה (the along Jordan), וְהָי֥וּ (and it shall) תוֹצְאֹתָ֖יו (end) יָ֣ם (at Sea) הַמֶּ֑לַח (the Salt).

זֹאת֩ (This) תִּהְיֶ֨ה (shall be) לָכֶ֥ם (to you⁺) הָאָ֛רֶץ (the land) לִגְבֻלֹתֶ֖יהָ (with its boundaries) סָבִֽיב׃ (all around).

13  וַיְצַ֣ו (And commanded) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), זֹ֣את (This is) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) תִּתְנַחֲל֤וּ (shall inherit) אֹתָהּ֙ (you) בְּגוֹרָ֔ל (by lot), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which) צִוָּ֣ה (has commanded) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) לָתֵ֛ת (to give) לְתִשְׁעַ֥ת (to the nine) הַמַּטּ֖וֹת (tribes) וַחֲצִ֥י (and) הַמַּטֶּֽה׃ (to the half-tribe); 14  כִּ֣י (for) לָקְח֞וּ (has received) מַטֵּ֨ה (the tribe) בְנֵ֤י (of the sons) הָראוּבֵנִי֙ (of the Reubenite) לְבֵ֣ית (according to the house) אֲבֹתָ֔ם (of their fathers), וּמַטֵּ֥ה (and the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) הַגָּדִ֖י (of the Gadite) לְבֵ֣ית (according to the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), וַחֲצִי֙ (and) מַטֵּ֣ה (the half-tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh) לָקְח֖וּ (has received) נַחֲלָתָֽם׃ (its inheritance). 15  שְׁנֵ֥י (Two) הַמַּטּ֖וֹת (the tribes) וַחֲצִ֣י (and) הַמַּטֶּ֑ה (the half-tribe) לָקְח֣וּ (have received) נַחֲלָתָ֗ם (their inheritance) מֵעֵ֛בֶר (on this side) לְיַרְדֵּ֥ן (of the Jordan) יְרֵח֖וֹ (near Jericho) קֵ֥דְמָה (eastward), מִזְרָֽחָה׃פ (toward the sunrise).

Leaders to Divide the Land

16  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 17  אֵ֚לֶּה (These) שְׁמ֣וֹת (are the names) הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים (of the men) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יִנְחֲל֥וּ (shall divide as an inheritance) לָכֶ֖ם (among you⁺) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land): אֶלְעָזָר֙ (Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (and Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נֽוּן׃ (of Nun). 18  וְנָשִׂ֥יא (And leader) אֶחָ֛ד (one)— נָשִׂ֥יא (leader) אֶחָ֖ד (one) מִמַּטֶּ֑ה (from a tribe)— תִּקְח֖וּ (you⁺ shall take) לִנְחֹ֥ל (to distribute) אֶת־ (-) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land). 19  וְאֵ֖לֶּה (And these) שְׁמ֣וֹת (are the names) הָאֲנָשִׁ֑ים (of the men):

לְמַטֵּ֣ה (From the tribe) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) כָּלֵ֖ב (Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּֽה׃ (of Jephunneh);

20  וּלְמַטֵּה֙ (and from the tribe) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) שִׁמְע֔וֹן (of Simeon) שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל (Shemuel) בֶּן־ (son) עַמִּיהֽוּד׃ (of Ammihud);

21  לְמַטֵּ֣ה (from the tribe) בִנְיָמִ֔ן (of Benjamin) אֱלִידָ֖ד (Elidad) בֶּן־ (son) כִּסְלֽוֹן׃ (of Chislon);

22  וּלְמַטֵּ֥ה (and from the tribe) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) דָ֖ן (of Dan), נָשִׂ֑יא (a leader) בֻּקִּ֖י (Bukki) בֶּן־ (son) יָגְלִֽי׃ (of Jogli);

23  לִבְנֵ֣י (from the sons) יוֹסֵ֔ף (of Joseph), לְמַטֵּ֥ה (from the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה (of Manasseh), נָשִׂ֑יא (a leader) חַנִּיאֵ֖ל (Hanniel) בֶּן־ (son) אֵפֹֽד׃ (of Ephod);

24  וּלְמַטֵּ֥ה (and from the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) אֶפְרַ֖יִם (of Ephraim) נָשִׂ֑יא (a leader) קְמוּאֵ֖ל (Kemuel) בֶּן־ (son) שִׁפְטָֽן׃ (of Shiphtan);

25  וּלְמַטֵּ֥ה (and from the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) זְבוּלֻ֖ן (of Zebulun) נָשִׂ֑יא (a leader) אֱלִיצָפָ֖ן (Elizaphan) בֶּן־ (son) פַּרְנָֽךְ׃ (of Parnach);

26  וּלְמַטֵּ֥ה (and from the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשָׂשכָ֖ר (of Issachar) נָשִׂ֑יא (a leader) פַּלְטִיאֵ֖ל (Paltiel) בֶּן־ (son) עַזָּֽן׃ (of Azzan);

27  וּלְמַטֵּ֥ה (and from the tribe) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) אָשֵׁ֖ר (of Asher) נָשִׂ֑יא (a leader) אֲחִיה֖וּד (Ahihud) בֶּן־ (son) שְׁלֹמִֽי׃ (of Shelomi);

28  וּלְמַטֵּ֥ה (and from the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) נַפְתָּלִ֖י (of Naphtali) נָשִׂ֑יא (a leader) פְּדַהְאֵ֖ל (Pedahel) בֶּן־ (son) עַמִּיהֽוּד׃ (of Ammihud).

29  אֵ֕לֶּה (These) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (are those whom) צִוָּ֣ה (commanded) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) לְנַחֵ֥ל (to divide the inheritance) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵֽי־ (among the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃פ (of Canaan).
