Wanderings in the Wilderness
1 וַנֵּ֜פֶן (And we turned) וַנִּסַּ֤ע (and set out) הַמִּדְבָּ֙רָה֙ (into the wilderness), דֶּ֣רֶךְ (the Way) יַם־ (of the Sea) ס֔וּף (Red), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֵלָ֑י (to me). וַנָּ֥סָב (And we went around) אֶת־ (-) הַר־ (Mount) שֵׂעִ֖יר (Seir) יָמִ֥ים (for days) רַבִּֽים׃ס (many).
2 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
3 רַב־ (Long enough) לָכֶ֕ם (You⁺) סֹ֖ב (have been going around) אֶת־ (-) הָהָ֣ר (the mountain) הַזֶּ֑ה (this); פְּנ֥וּ (turn) לָכֶ֖ם (for yourselves) צָפֹֽנָה׃ (northward).
4 וְאֶת־ (And) הָעָם֮ (the people) צַ֣ו (command), לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), אַתֶּ֣ם (You⁺) עֹֽבְרִ֗ים (are passing over) בִּגְבוּל֙ (into the border) אֲחֵיכֶ֣ם (of your⁺ brothers), בְּנֵי־ (the sons) עֵשָׂ֔ו (of Esau) הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים (who live) בְּשֵׂעִ֑יר (in Seir), וְיִֽירְא֣וּ (and they will be afraid) מִכֶּ֔ם (of you⁺). וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם (And you⁺ shall be on guard) מְאֹֽד׃ (exceedingly)
5 אַל־ (not) תִּתְגָּר֣וּ (do meddle) בָ֔ם (with them), כִּ֠י (for) לֹֽא־ (not) אֶתֵּ֤ן (I will give) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) מֵֽאַרְצָ֔ם (of their land), עַ֖ד (even) מִדְרַ֣ךְ (the treading) כַּף־ (of the sole) רָ֑גֶל (of a foot), כִּֽי־ (for) יְרֻשָּׁ֣ה (as a possession) לְעֵשָׂ֔ו (to Esau) נָתַ֖תִּי (I have given) אֶת־ (-) הַ֥ר (Mount) שֵׂעִֽיר׃ (Seir).
6 אֹ֣כֶל (Food) תִּשְׁבְּר֧וּ (you⁺ shall buy) מֵֽאִתָּ֛ם (from them) בַּכֶּ֖סֶף (with silver), וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֑ם (and you⁺ will eat); וְגַם־ (and) מַ֜יִם (water) תִּכְר֧וּ (you⁺ shall buy) מֵאִתָּ֛ם (from them) בַּכֶּ֖סֶף (with silver), וּשְׁתִיתֶֽם׃ (and you⁺ will drink).
7 כִּי֩ (For) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) בֵּֽרַכְךָ֗ (has blessed you) בְּכֹל֙ (in all) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (the work) יָדֶ֔ךָ (of your hand); יָדַ֣ע (He knows) לֶכְתְּךָ֔ (your walking) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּדְבָּ֥ר (the wilderness) הַגָּדֹ֖ל (vast) הַזֶּ֑ה (this). זֶ֣ה׀ (This) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (forty) שָׁנָ֗ה (years) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God has been) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you); לֹ֥א (not) חָסַ֖רְתָּ (you have lacked) דָּבָֽר׃ (a thing).
8 וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֞ר (And we passed) מֵאֵ֧ת (beyond) אַחֵ֣ינוּ (our brothers), בְנֵי־ (the sons) עֵשָׂ֗ו (of Esau), הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ (who dwell) בְּשֵׂעִ֔יר (in Seir), מִדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (by the way) הָֽעֲרָבָ֔ה (of the plain) מֵאֵילַ֖ת (by Elath) וּמֵעֶצְיֹ֣ן (and Ezion-) גָּ֑בֶרס (geber), וַנֵּ֙פֶן֙ (and we turned) וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֔ר (and passed) דֶּ֖רֶךְ (by the way) מִדְבַּ֥ר (of the Wilderness) מוֹאָֽב׃ (of Moab).
9 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me), אֶל־ (Not) תָּ֙צַר֙ (do harass) אֶת־ (-) מוֹאָ֔ב (Moab), וְאַל־ (and do not) תִּתְגָּ֥ר (contend) בָּ֖ם (with them) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (in battle), כִּ֠י (for) לֹֽא־ (not) אֶתֵּ֨ן (I will give) לְךָ֤ (to you) מֵֽאַרְצוֹ֙ (of their land) יְרֻשָּׁ֔ה (as a possession), כִּ֣י (because) לִבְנֵי־ (to the sons) ל֔וֹט (of Lot) נָתַ֥תִּי (I have given) אֶת־ (-) עָ֖ר (Ar) יְרֻשָּֽׁה׃ (as a possession).
10 הָאֵמִ֥ים (The Emites) לְפָנִ֖ים (in times past) יָ֣שְׁבוּ (had dwelt) בָ֑הּ (there), עַ֣ם (a people) גָּד֥וֹל (as great) וְרַ֛ב (and numerous) וָרָ֖ם (and tall) כָּעֲנָקִֽים׃ (as the Anakim).
11 רְפָאִ֛ים (Rephaim) יֵחָשְׁב֥וּ (were regarded as) אַף־ (also) הֵ֖ם (they), כָּעֲנָקִ֑ים (like the Anakites); וְהַמֹּ֣אָבִ֔ים (and the Moabites) יִקְרְא֥וּ (call) לָהֶ֖ם (them) אֵמִֽים׃ (Emites).
12 וּבְשֵׂעִ֞יר (And in Seir) יָשְׁב֣וּ (dwelt) הַחֹרִים֮ (the Horites) לְפָנִים֒ (formerly); וּבְנֵ֧י (and the sons) עֵשָׂ֣ו (of Esau) יִֽירָשׁ֗וּם (dispossessed them) וַיַּשְׁמִידוּם֙ (and destroyed them) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (from before their faces) וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ (and dwelt) תַּחְתָּ֑ם (in their place), כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר (as) עָשָׂ֣ה (did) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) לְאֶ֙רֶץ֙ (to the land) יְרֻשָּׁת֔וֹ (of their possession), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) נָתַ֥ן (gave) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them).
13 עַתָּ֗ה (Now) קֻ֛מוּ (rise) וְעִבְר֥וּ (and pass over) לָכֶ֖ם (to) אֶת־ (-) נַ֣חַל (the Brook) זָ֑רֶד (of Zered).
וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֖ר (And we passed over) אֶת־ (-) נַ֥חַל (the Brook) זָֽרֶד׃ (of Zered).
14 וְהַיָּמִ֞ים (And the time) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הָלַ֣כְנוּ׀ (we walked) מִקָּדֵ֣שׁ (from Kadesh-) בַּרְנֵ֗עַ (barnea) עַ֤ד (until) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָבַ֙רְנוּ֙ (we passed over) אֶת־ (-) נַ֣חַל (the Brook) זֶ֔רֶד (of Zered) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (was thirty) וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה (and eight) שָׁנָ֑ה (years), עַד־ (until) תֹּ֨ם (were finished) כָּל־ (all) הַדּ֜וֹר (the generation) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (of the men) הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ (of war) מִקֶּ֣רֶב (from the midst) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה (of the camp), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) נִשְׁבַּ֥ע (had sworn) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them).
15 וְגַ֤ם (For indeed) יַד־ (the hand) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) הָ֣יְתָה (was) בָּ֔ם (against them) לְהֻמָּ֖ם (to destroy them) מִקֶּ֣רֶב (from the midst) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה (of the camp), עַ֖ד (until) תֻּמָּֽם׃ (they came to an end).
16 וַיְהִ֨י (And it came to pass), כַאֲשֶׁר־ (when) תַּ֜מּוּ (had finally perished) כָּל־ (all) אַנְשֵׁ֧י (the men) הַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה (of war), לָמ֖וּת (dying) מִקֶּ֥רֶב (from among) הָעָֽם׃ס (the people),
17 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (that spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
18 אַתָּ֨ה (You) עֹבֵ֥ר (are to pass over) הַיּ֛וֹם (this day) אֶת־ (-) גְּב֥וּל (the boundary) מוֹאָ֖ב (of Moab) אֶת־ (-) עָֽר׃ (at Ar).
19 וְקָרַבְתָּ֗ (And when you come) מ֚וּל (near) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) עַמּ֔וֹן (of Ammon), אַל־ (not) תְּצֻרֵ֖ם (do harass them) וְאַל־ (and not) תִּתְגָּ֣ר (you shall fight) בָּ֑ם (with them), כִּ֣י (for) לֹֽא־ (not) אֶ֠תֵּן (I will give) מֵאֶ֨רֶץ (of the land) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֤וֹן (of Ammon) לְךָ֙ (to you) יְרֻשָּׁ֔ה (as a possession), כִּ֥י (because) לִבְנֵי־ (to the sons) ל֖וֹט (of Lot) נְתַתִּ֥יהָ (I have given it) יְרֻשָּֽׁה׃ (as a possession).
20 אֶֽרֶץ־ (A land) רְפָאִ֥ים (of the Rephaim) תֵּחָשֵׁ֖ב (was regarded as) אַף־ (also) הִ֑וא (that); רְפָאִ֤ים (the Rephaim) יָֽשְׁבוּ־ (dwelt) בָהּ֙ (there) לְפָנִ֔ים (formerly), וְהָֽעַמֹּנִ֔ים (and the Ammonites) יִקְרְא֥וּ (call) לָהֶ֖ם (them) זַמְזֻמִּֽים׃ (Zamzumim)—
21 עַ֣ם (a people) גָּד֥וֹל (as great) וְרַ֛ב (and numerous) וָרָ֖ם (and tall) כָּעֲנָקִ֑ים (as the Anakim)— וַיַּשְׁמִידֵ֤ם (and destroyed them) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (from before them) וַיִּירָשֻׁ֖ם (and they dispossessed them) וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ (and dwelt) תַחְתָּֽם׃ (in their place)—
22 כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (as) עָשָׂה֙ (He had done) לִבְנֵ֣י (for the sons) עֵשָׂ֔ו (of Esau) הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים (who dwelt) בְּשֵׂעִ֑יר (in Seir), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (when) הִשְׁמִ֤יד (He destroyed) אֶת־ (-) הַחֹרִי֙ (the Horite) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (from before them) וַיִּֽירָשֻׁם֙ (and they dispossessed them) וַיֵּשְׁב֣וּ (and dwelt) תַחְתָּ֔ם (in their place), עַ֖ד (even to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).
23 וְהָֽעַוִּ֛ים (And the Avites) הַיֹּשְׁבִ֥ים (who dwelt) בַּחֲצֵרִ֖ים (in villages) עַד־ (as far as) עַזָּ֑ה (Gaza), כַּפְתֹּרִים֙ (the Caphtorites) הַיֹּצְאִ֣ים (who came) מִכַּפְתּ֔וֹר (from Caphtor) הִשְׁמִידֻ֖ם (destroyed them) וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ (and dwelt) תַחְתָּֽם׃ (in their place).
The Defeat of Sihon
(Numbers 21:21–30)
24 ק֣וּמוּ (Rise), סְּע֗וּ (set out), וְעִבְרוּ֮ (and pass over) אֶת־ (-) נַ֣חַל (the River) אַרְנֹן֒ (Arnon). רְאֵ֣ה (Look), נָתַ֣תִּי (I have given) בְ֠יָדְךָ (into your hand) אֶת־ (-) סִיחֹ֨ן (Sihon) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) חֶשְׁבּ֧וֹן (of Heshbon), הָֽאֱמֹרִ֛י (the Amorite), וְאֶת־ (and) אַרְצ֖וֹ (his land). הָחֵ֣ל (Begin) רָ֑שׁ (to possess it) וְהִתְגָּ֥ר (and engage) בּ֖וֹ (him) מִלְחָמָֽה׃ (in battle).
25 הַיּ֣וֹם (The day) הַזֶּ֗ה (this) אָחֵל֙ (I will begin) תֵּ֤ת (to put) פַּחְדְּךָ֙ (the dread) וְיִרְאָ֣תְךָ֔ (and fear) עַל־ (of you) פְּנֵי֙ (upon) הָֽעַמִּ֔ים (the nations) תַּ֖חַת (under) כָּל־ (all) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (the heavens), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) יִשְׁמְעוּן֙ (shall hear) שִׁמְעֲךָ֔ (the report of you) וְרָגְז֥וּ (and shall tremble) וְחָל֖וּ (and be in anguish) מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃ (because of you).
26 וָאֶשְׁלַ֤ח (And I sent) מַלְאָכִים֙ (messengers) מִמִּדְבַּ֣ר (from the Wilderness) קְדֵמ֔וֹת (of Kedemoth) אֶל־ (to) סִיח֖וֹן (Sihon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) חֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן (of Heshbon) דִּבְרֵ֥י (with words) שָׁל֖וֹם (of peace), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
27 אֶעְבְּרָ֣ה (Let me pass through) בְאַרְצֶ֔ךָ (your land), בַּדֶּ֥רֶךְ (in the way) בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ (in the way) אֵלֵ֑ךְ (I will go along), לֹ֥א (and neither) אָס֖וּר (will I turn) יָמִ֥ין (to the right) וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃ (or left).
28 אֹ֣כֶל (Food) בַּכֶּ֤סֶף (for silver) תַּשְׁבִּרֵ֙נִי֙ (you shall sell me) וְאָכַ֔לְתִּי (that I may eat), וּמַ֛יִם (and water) בַּכֶּ֥סֶף (for silver) תִּתֶּן־ (give) לִ֖י (to me) וְשָׁתִ֑יתִי (that I may drink). רַ֖ק (Only) אֶעְבְּרָ֥ה (let me pass through) בְרַגְלָֽי׃ (on foot)
29 כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) עָֽשׂוּ־ (did) לִ֜י (for me) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) עֵשָׂ֗ו (of Esau) הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ (who dwell) בְּשֵׂעִ֔יר (in Seir), וְהַמּ֣וֹאָבִ֔ים (and the Moabites) הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים (who dwell) בְּעָ֑ר (in Ar), עַ֤ד (until) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (that) אֶֽעֱבֹר֙ (I cross) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (the Jordan) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (our God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָֽנוּ׃ (to us.).
30 וְלֹ֣א (Not) אָבָ֗ה (would) סִיחֹן֙ (Sihon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן (of Heshbon) הַעֲבִרֵ֖נוּ (let us pass) בּ֑וֹ (through), כִּֽי־ (for) הִקְשָׁה֩ (hardened) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) אֶת־ (-) רוּח֗וֹ (his spirit) וְאִמֵּץ֙ (and made obstinate) אֶת־ (-) לְבָב֔וֹ (his heart), לְמַ֛עַן (that) תִּתּ֥וֹ (He might deliver him) בְיָדְךָ֖ (into your hand) כַּיּ֥וֹם (in the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ס (this).
31 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֵלַ֔י (to me) רְאֵ֗ה (See), הַֽחִלֹּ֙תִי֙ (I have begun) תֵּ֣ת (to give over) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (to you) אֶת־ (-) סִיחֹ֖ן (Sihon) וְאֶת־ (and) אַרְצ֑וֹ (his land). הָחֵ֣ל (Begin) רָ֔שׁ (to possess)— לָרֶ֖שֶׁת (to possess) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצֽוֹ׃ (his land).
32 וַיֵּצֵא֩ (And came out) סִיחֹ֨ן (Sihon) לִקְרָאתֵ֜נוּ (against us), ה֧וּא (he) וְכָל־ (and all) עַמּ֛וֹ (his people), לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (to fight) יָֽהְצָה׃ (at Jaha z).
33 וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֛הוּ (And delivered him) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (our God) לְפָנֵ֑ינוּ (over to us). וַנַּ֥ךְ (And we defeated) אֹת֛וֹ (him) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנוֹ (his sons) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) עַמּֽוֹ׃ (his people).
34 וַנִּלְכֹּ֤ד (And we took) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) עָרָיו֙ (his cities) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֔וא (that) וַֽנַּחֲרֵם֙ (and devoted to destruction) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) עִ֣יר (city), מְתִ֔ם (the men), וְהַנָּשִׁ֖ים (and the women), וְהַטָּ֑ף (and the little ones). לֹ֥א (No) הִשְׁאַ֖רְנוּ (we left) שָׂרִֽיד׃ (survivor).
35 רַ֥ק (Only) הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה (the livestock) בָּזַ֣זְנוּ (we plundered) לָ֑נוּ (for ourselves) וּשְׁלַ֥ל (and with the spoil) הֶעָרִ֖ים (of the cities) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לָכָֽדְנוּ׃ (we had captured).
36 מֵֽעֲרֹעֵ֡ר (From Aroer), אֲשֶׁר֩ (which is) עַל־ (on) שְׂפַת־ (the bank) נַ֨חַל (of the River) אַרְנֹ֜ן (Arnon), וְהָעִ֨יר (and from the city) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that is) בַּנַּ֙חַל֙ (in the ravine), וְעַד־ (and as far as) הַגִּלְעָ֔ד (Gilead), לֹ֤א (not) הָֽיְתָה֙ (there was) קִרְיָ֔ה (one city) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which was) שָׂגְבָ֖ה (too high) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (for us). אֶת־ (-) הַכֹּ֕ל (all) נָתַ֛ן (to our faces) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (gave) לְפָנֵֽינוּ׃ (before our faces).
37 רַ֛ק (Only) אֶל־ (near) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֖וֹן (of Ammon) לֹ֣א (not) קָרָ֑בְתָּ (you did go near) כָּל־ (anywhere) יַ֞ד (along) נַ֤חַל (the River) יַבֹּק֙ (Jabbok), וְעָרֵ֣י (or to the cities) הָהָ֔ר (of the mountains), וְכֹ֥ל (or) אֲשֶׁר־ (wherever) צִוָּ֖ה (had forbidden us) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ (our God).
