The Command to Leave Horeb
(Exodus 33:1–6)

1  אֵ֣לֶּה (These are) הַדְּבָרִ֗ים (the words) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) דִּבֶּ֤ר (spoke) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) בְּעֵ֖בֶר (on this side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (of the Jordan) בַּמִּדְבָּ֡ר (in the wilderness), בָּֽעֲרָבָה֩ (in the plain) מ֨וֹל (opposite) ס֜וּף (Suph) בֵּֽין־ (between) פָּארָ֧ן (Paran) וּבֵֽין־ (and between) תֹּ֛פֶל (Tophel) וְלָבָ֥ן (and Laban) וַחֲצֵרֹ֖ת (and Hazeroth) וְדִ֥י (and Di-) זָהָֽב׃ (zahab).

2  אַחַ֨ד (It is one) עָשָׂ֥ר (and ten) יוֹם֙ (days) מֵֽחֹרֵ֔ב (from Horeb) דֶּ֖רֶךְ (by way) הַר־ (of Mount) שֵׂעִ֑יר (Seir) עַ֖ד (to) קָדֵ֥שׁ (Kadesh-) בַּרְנֵֽעַ׃ (barnea). 3  וַיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בְּאַרְבָּעִ֣ים (in the fortieth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year), בְּעַשְׁתֵּֽי־ (in the one) עָשָׂ֥ר (and tenth) חֹ֖דֶשׁ (month), בְּאֶחָ֣ד (on the first) לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ (of the month), דִּבֶּ֤ר (that spoke) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) כְּ֠כֹל (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) צִוָּ֧ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֹת֖וֹ (him) אֲלֵהֶֽם׃ (concerning them) 4  אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) הַכֹּת֗וֹ (he had killed) אֵ֚ת (-) סִיחֹן֙ (Sihon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (dwelt) בְּחֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן (in Heshbon), וְאֵ֗ת (and) ע֚וֹג (Og) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֔ן (of Bashan), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יוֹשֵׁ֥ב (dwelt) בְּעַשְׁתָּרֹ֖ת (at Ashtaroth) בְּאֶדְרֶֽעִי׃ (in Edrei).

5  בְּעֵ֥בֶר (On this side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן (of the Jordan), בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מוֹאָ֑ב (of Moab), הוֹאִ֣יל (began) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) בֵּאֵ֛ר (to explain) אֶת־ (-) הַתּוֹרָ֥ה (the law) הַזֹּ֖את (this), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying):

6  יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ (our God) דִּבֶּ֥ר (spoke) אֵלֵ֖ינוּ (to us) בְּחֹרֵ֣ב (in Horeb), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying): רַב־ (Long enough) לָכֶ֥ם (you⁺) שֶׁ֖בֶת (have dwelt) בָּהָ֥ר (at the mountain) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 7  פְּנ֣וּ׀ (Turn) וּסְע֣וּ (and set out) לָכֶ֗ם (for yourselves) וּבֹ֨אוּ (and go) הַ֥ר (to the mountains) הָֽאֱמֹרִי֮ (of the Amorite) וְאֶל־ (and to) כָּל־ (all) שְׁכֵנָיו֒ (the neighboring places) בָּעֲרָבָ֥ה (in the plain), בָהָ֛ר (in the hill country), וּבַשְּׁפֵלָ֥ה (and in the Shephelah), וּבַנֶּ֖גֶב (and in the Negev), וּבְח֣וֹף (and on) הַיָּ֑ם (the seacoast) אֶ֤רֶץ (to the land) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (of the Canaanite), וְהַלְּבָנ֔וֹן (and to Lebanon) עַד־ (as far as) הַנָּהָ֥ר (the river) הַגָּדֹ֖ל (great), נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָֽת׃ (Euphrates).

8  רְאֵ֛ה (See), נָתַ֥תִּי (I have set) לִפְנֵיכֶ֖ם (before you⁺) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land). בֹּ֚אוּ (Go in) וּרְשׁ֣וּ (and possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) נִשְׁבַּ֣ע (swore) יְ֠הוָה (YHWH) לַאֲבֹ֨תֵיכֶ֜ם (to your⁺ fathers), לְאַבְרָהָ֨ם (Abraham), לְיִצְחָ֤ק (Isaac), וּֽלְיַעֲקֹב֙ (and Jacob), לָתֵ֣ת (to give) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) וּלְזַרְעָ֖ם (and to their seed) אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ (after them).

Moses Appoints Leaders
(Exodus 18:13–27)

9  וָאֹמַ֣ר (And I spoke) אֲלֵכֶ֔ם (to you⁺) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִ֖וא (that), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), לֹא־ (Not) אוּכַ֥ל (I am able) לְבַדִּ֖י (alone) שְׂאֵ֥ת (to bear) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 10  יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ God) הִרְבָּ֣ה (has multiplied) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺), וְהִנְּכֶ֣ם (and behold) הַיּ֔וֹם (today you are), כְּכוֹכְבֵ֥י (as the stars) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (of the heavens) לָרֹֽב׃ (in multitude). 11  יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) אֲבֽוֹתֵכֶ֗ם (of your⁺ fathers) יֹסֵ֧ף (may add) עֲלֵיכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) כָּכֶ֖ם (as) אֶ֣לֶף (as thousand) פְּעָמִ֑ים (a times) וִיבָרֵ֣ךְ (and bless) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (He has promised) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺). 12  אֵיכָ֥ה (How) אֶשָּׂ֖א (can I bear) לְבַדִּ֑י (alone) טָרְחֲכֶ֥ם (your⁺ troubles) וּמַֽשַּׂאֲכֶ֖ם (and your⁺ burdens) וְרִֽיבְכֶֽם׃ (and your⁺ disputes)? 13  הָב֣וּ (Choose) לָ֠כֶם (for yourselves) אֲנָשִׁ֨ים (men) חֲכָמִ֧ים (wise) וּנְבֹנִ֛ים (and understanding) וִידֻעִ֖ים (and knowledgeable) לְשִׁבְטֵיכֶ֑ם (from among your⁺ tribes), וַאֲשִׂימֵ֖ם (and I will appoint them) בְּרָאשֵׁיכֶֽם׃ (as your⁺ heads).

14  וַֽתַּעֲנ֖וּ (And you⁺ answered) אֹתִ֑י (me) וַתֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and said), טֽוֹב־ (Good is) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the thing) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ (you have told us) לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ (to do).

15  וָאֶקַּ֞ח (And I took) אֶת־ (-) רָאשֵׁ֣י (the heads) שִׁבְטֵיכֶ֗ם (of your⁺ tribes), אֲנָשִׁ֤ים (men) חֲכָמִים֙ (wise) וִֽידֻעִ֔ים (and knowledgeable), וָאֶתֵּ֥ן (and I appointed) אֹתָ֛ם (them) רָאשִׁ֖ים (heads) עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם (over you⁺)— שָׂרֵ֨י (leaders) אֲלָפִ֜ים (of thousands), וְשָׂרֵ֣י (and leaders) מֵא֗וֹת (of hundreds), וְשָׂרֵ֤י (and leaders) חֲמִשִּׁים֙ (of fifties), וְשָׂרֵ֣י (and leaders) עֲשָׂרֹ֔ת (of tens), וְשֹׁטְרִ֖ים (and officers) לְשִׁבְטֵיכֶֽם׃ (for your⁺ tribes).

16  וָאֲצַוֶּה֙ (And I commanded) אֶת־ (-) שֹׁ֣פְטֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ judges) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִ֖וא (that), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), שָׁמֹ֤עַ (Listen) בֵּין־ (between) אֲחֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ brothers), וּשְׁפַטְתֶּ֣ם (and judge) צֶ֔דֶק (righteously) בֵּֽין־ (between) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) וּבֵין־ (and between) אָחִ֖יו (his brother), וּבֵ֥ין (or) גֵּרֽוֹ׃ (the sojourner who is with him). 17  לֹֽא־ (Not) תַכִּ֨ירוּ (you⁺ shall respect) פָנִ֜ים (persons) בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֗ט (in judgment); כַּקָּטֹ֤ן (the small) כַּגָּדֹל֙ (as well as the great) תִּשְׁמָע֔וּן (you⁺ shall hear). לֹ֤א (Not) תָג֙וּרוּ֙ (you⁺ shall be afraid) מִפְּנֵי־ (of the face) אִ֔ישׁ (of any man), כִּ֥י (for) הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט (the judgment) לֵאלֹהִ֣ים (unto God) ה֑וּא (it is). וְהַדָּבָר֙ (And the case) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יִקְשֶׁ֣ה (is too hard) מִכֶּ֔ם (for you⁺), תַּקְרִב֥וּן (bring) אֵלַ֖י (to me) וּשְׁמַעְתִּֽיו׃ (and I will hear it).

18  וָאֲצַוֶּ֥ה (And I commanded) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֑וא (that) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the things) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תַּעֲשֽׂוּן׃ (you⁺ should do).

Twelve Spies Sent Out
(Numbers 13:1–33)

19  וַנִּסַּ֣ע (And we departed) מֵחֹרֵ֗ב (from Horeb) וַנֵּ֡לֶךְ (and went through) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַמִּדְבָּ֣ר (wilderness), הַגָּדוֹל֩ (great) וְהַנּוֹרָ֨א (and fearful) הַה֜וּא (that) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) רְאִיתֶ֗ם (you⁺ saw) דֶּ֚רֶךְ (on the way to) הַ֣ר (the mountains) הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוָּ֛ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (our God) אֹתָ֑נוּ (us). וַנָּבֹ֕א (And we came) עַ֖ד (to) קָדֵ֥שׁ (Kadesh-) בַּרְנֵֽעַ׃ (barnea), 20  וָאֹמַ֖ר (and I said) אֲלֵכֶ֑ם (to you⁺) בָּאתֶם֙ (You⁺ have come) עַד־ (to) הַ֣ר (the hill country) הָאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (our God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָֽנוּ׃ (to us). 21  רְ֠אֵה (See), נָתַ֨ן (has set) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ (your God) לְפָנֶ֖יךָ (before you) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land). עֲלֵ֣ה (Go up), רֵ֗שׁ (possess it) כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ (as) דִּבֶּ֨ר (has spoken) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (God) אֲבֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ (of your fathers) לָ֔ךְ (to you). אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֖א (do fear) וְאַל־ (or) תֵּחָֽת׃ (be discouraged).

22  וַתִּקְרְב֣וּן (And came near) אֵלַי֮ (to me) כֻּלְּכֶם֒ (you⁺ all) וַתֹּאמְר֗וּ (and said), נִשְׁלְחָ֤ה (Let us send) אֲנָשִׁים֙ (men) לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ (before us), וְיַחְפְּרוּ־ (and let them search out) לָ֖נוּ (for us) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land) וְיָשִׁ֤בוּ (and bring back) אֹתָ֙נוּ֙ (to us) דָּבָ֔ר (word) אֶת־ (of) הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (the way) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (by which) נַעֲלֶה־ (we should go up) בָּ֔הּ (into it) וְאֵת֙ (and) הֶֽעָרִ֔ים (of the cities) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) נָבֹ֖א (we shall come) אֲלֵיהֶֽן׃ (into).

23  וַיִּיטַ֥ב (And was good) בְּעֵינַ֖י (in my eyes) הַדָּבָ֑ר (the plan); וָאֶקַּ֤ח (and I took) מִכֶּם֙ (from among you⁺) שְׁנֵ֣ים (two) עָשָׂ֣ר (and ten) אֲנָשִׁ֔ים (men), אִ֥ישׁ (man) אֶחָ֖ד (one) לַשָּֽׁבֶט׃ (per tribe). 24  וַיִּפְנוּ֙ (And they departed) וַיַּעֲל֣וּ (and went up) הָהָ֔רָה (into the mountains) וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and came) עַד־ (to) נַ֣חַל (the Valley) אֶשְׁכֹּ֑ל (of Eshcol) וַֽיְרַגְּל֖וּ (and spied out) אֹתָֽהּ׃ (it). 25  וַיִּקְח֤וּ (And they took) בְיָדָם֙ (in their hands) מִפְּרִ֣י (of the fruit) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land) וַיּוֹרִ֖דוּ (and brought it down) אֵלֵ֑ינוּ (to us), וַיָּשִׁ֨בוּ (and they brought back) אֹתָ֤נוּ (to us) דָבָר֙ (word) וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and said), טוֹבָ֣ה (Good) הָאָ֔רֶץ (is the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ (our God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָֽנוּ׃ (to us).

Israel’s Rebellion
(Numbers 14:1–12)

26  וְלֹ֥א (And not) אֲבִיתֶ֖ם (you⁺ would) לַעֲלֹ֑ת (go up), וַתַּמְר֕וּ (and you⁺ rebelled against) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֥י (the mouth) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God) 27  וַתֵּרָגְנ֤וּ (and you⁺ murmured) בְאָהֳלֵיכֶם֙ (in your⁺ tents) וַתֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and said), בְּשִׂנְאַ֤ת (Because hates) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֹתָ֔נוּ (us) הוֹצִיאָ֖נוּ (He has brought us) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt) לָתֵ֥ת (to deliver) אֹתָ֛נוּ (us) בְּיַ֥ד (into the hand) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (of the Amorite), לְהַשְׁמִידֵֽנוּ׃ (to destroy us). 28  אָנָ֣ה׀ (Where) אֲנַ֣חְנוּ (can we) עֹלִ֗ים (go up)? אַחֵינוּ֩ (Our brothers) הֵמַ֨סּוּ (have discouraged) אֶת־ (-) לְבָבֵ֜נוּ (our hearts), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), עַ֣ם (The people are) גָּד֤וֹל (greater) וָרָם֙ (and taller) מִמֶּ֔נּוּ (than we); עָרִ֛ים (the cities are) גְּדֹלֹ֥ת (great) וּבְצוּרֹ֖ת (and fortified) בַּשָּׁמָ֑יִם (up to the heavens). וְגַם־ (And moreover), בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) עֲנָקִ֖ים (of Anak) רָאִ֥ינוּ (we have seen) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

29  וָאֹמַ֖ר (And I said) אֲלֵכֶ֑ם (to you⁺) לֹא־ (Not) תַֽעַרְצ֥וּן (do be terrified) וְֽלֹא־ (and not) תִֽירְא֖וּן (afraid) מֵהֶֽם׃ (of them). 30  יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ God) הַהֹלֵ֣ךְ (goes) לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם (before you⁺). ה֖וּא (He) יִלָּחֵ֣ם (will fight) לָכֶ֑ם (for you⁺) כְּ֠כֹל (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָשָׂ֧ה (He did) אִתְּכֶ֛ם (for you⁺) בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם (in Egypt) לְעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃ (before your⁺ eyes), 31  וּבַמִּדְבָּר֙ (and in the wilderness) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) רָאִ֔יתָ (you saw) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (how) נְשָׂאֲךָ֙ (carried you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) יִשָּׂא־ (carries) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) אֶת־ (-) בְּנ֑וֹ (his son), בְּכָל־ (in all) הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (the way) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הֲלַכְתֶּ֔ם (you⁺ went), עַד־ (until) בֹּאֲכֶ֖ם (you⁺ came) עַד־ (to) הַמָּק֥וֹם (the place) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

32  וּבַדָּבָ֖ר (And in the thing) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), אֵֽינְכֶם֙ (you⁺ did not) מַאֲמִינִ֔ם (believe) בַּיהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God), 33  הַהֹלֵ֨ךְ (who went) לִפְנֵיכֶ֜ם (before you⁺) בַּדֶּ֗רֶךְ (on the way) לָת֥וּר (to search out) לָכֶ֛ם (for you⁺) מָק֖וֹם (a place) לַֽחֲנֹֽתְכֶ֑ם (to pitch your⁺ tents) בָּאֵ֣שׁ׀ (in the fire) לַ֗יְלָה (by night), לַרְאֹֽתְכֶם֙ (to show you⁺) בַּדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (by the way) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) תֵּֽלְכוּ־ (you⁺ should go) בָ֔הּ (in), וּבֶעָנָ֖ן (and in the cloud) יוֹמָֽם׃ (by day).

Israel’s Penalty
(Numbers 14:20–35)

34  וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע (And heard) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) ק֣וֹל (the sound) דִּבְרֵיכֶ֑ם (of your⁺ words), וַיִּקְצֹ֖ף (and He was angry), וַיִּשָּׁבַ֥ע (and swore), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 35  אִם־ (Surely not) יִרְאֶ֥ה (shall see) אִישׁ֙ (one) בָּאֲנָשִׁ֣ים (of the men) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (of these), הַדּ֥וֹר (the generation) הָרָ֖ע (evil) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), אֵ֚ת (-) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַטּוֹבָ֔ה (good) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (of which) נִשְׁבַּ֔עְתִּי (I swore) לָתֵ֖ת (to give) לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (to your⁺ fathers)— 36  זֽוּלָתִ֞י (except) כָּלֵ֤ב (Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּה֙ (of Jephunneh). ה֣וּא (He) יִרְאֶ֔נָּה (shall see it), וְלֽוֹ־ (and to him) אֶתֵּ֧ן (I am giving) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֛רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דָּֽרַךְ־ (he walked) בָּ֖הּ (in), וּלְבָנָ֑יו (and to his sons), יַ֕עַן (on account of) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) מִלֵּ֖א (he has been fully) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

37  גַּם־ (Also) בִּי֙ (with me) הִתְאַנַּ֣ף (was angry) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) בִּגְלַלְכֶ֖ם (for your⁺ sakes), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), גַּם־ (Even) אַתָּ֖ה (you) לֹא־ (not) תָבֹ֥א (shall go in) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 38  יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ (Joshua) בִּן (son) נוּן֙ (of Nun) הָעֹמֵ֣ד (who stands) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before you), ה֖וּא (he) יָ֣בֹא (shall go in) שָׁ֑מָּה (there); אֹת֣וֹ (him) חַזֵּ֔ק (strengthen), כִּי־ (for) ה֖וּא (he) יַנְחִלֶ֥נָּה (shall cause to inherit it) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel). 39  וְטַפְּכֶם֩ (And your⁺ little ones), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) אֲמַרְתֶּ֜ם (you⁺ said) לָבַ֣ז (for plunder) יִהְיֶ֗ה (would be), וּ֠בְנֵיכֶם (and your⁺ sons) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) לֹא־ (not) יָדְע֤וּ (have knowledge) הַיּוֹם֙ (of today) ט֣וֹב (good) וָרָ֔ע (and evil), הֵ֖מָּה (they) יָבֹ֣אוּ (shall go in) שָׁ֑מָּה (there), וְלָהֶ֣ם (and to them) אֶתְּנֶ֔נָּה (I will give it), וְהֵ֖ם (and they) יִירָשֽׁוּהָּ׃ (shall possess it). 40  וְאַתֶּ֖ם (And as for you⁺), פְּנ֣וּ (turn) לָכֶ֑ם (for yourselves) וּסְע֥וּ (and set out) הַמִּדְבָּ֖רָה (into the wilderness) דֶּ֥רֶךְ (by the way) יַם־ (of the Sea) סֽוּף׃ (Red).

(Numbers 14:40–45)

41  וַֽתַּעֲנ֣וּ׀ (And you⁺ answered) וַתֹּאמְר֣וּ (and said) אֵלַ֗י (to me) חָטָאנוּ֮ (We have sinned) לַֽיהוָה֒ (against YHWH). אֲנַ֤חְנוּ (We) נַעֲלֶה֙ (will go up) וְנִלְחַ֔מְנוּ (and fight), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּ֖נוּ (commanded us) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (our God). וַֽתַּחְגְּר֗וּ (And you⁺ had girded on) אִ֚ישׁ (every man) אֶת־ (of) כְּלֵ֣י (his weapons) מִלְחַמְתּ֔וֹ (of war), וַתָּהִ֖ינוּ (and you⁺ were ready) לַעֲלֹ֥ת (to go up) הָהָֽרָה׃ (into the mountain).

42  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me), אֱמֹ֤ר (Tell) לָהֶם֙ (them) לֹ֤א (not) תַֽעֲלוּ֙ (do go up), וְלֹא־ (and not) תִלָּ֣חֲמ֔וּ (fight); כִּ֥י (for) אֵינֶ֖נִּי (I am not) בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם (among you⁺) וְלֹא֙ (lest) תִּנָּֽגְפ֔וּ (you⁺ be stricken) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the faces of) אֹיְבֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ enemies).

43  וָאֲדַבֵּ֥ר (And I spoke) אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) וְלֹ֣א (and not) שְׁמַעְתֶּ֑ם (you⁺ would listen), וַתַּמְרוּ֙ (and you⁺ rebelled against) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֣י (the mouth) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) וַתָּזִ֖דוּ (and proudly) וַתַּעֲל֥וּ (and went up) הָהָֽרָה׃ (into the mountain).

44  וַיֵּצֵ֨א (And came out) הָאֱמֹרִ֜י (the Amorite) הַיֹּשֵׁ֨ב (who dwelt) בָּהָ֤ר (in the mountain) הַהוּא֙ (that) לִקְרַאתְכֶ֔ם (against you⁺) וַיִּרְדְּפ֣וּ (and chased) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (like) תַּעֲשֶׂ֖ינָה (do) הַדְּבֹרִ֑ים (the bees), וַֽיַּכְּת֥וּ (and drove back) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (you⁺) בְּשֵׂעִ֖יר (from Seir) עַד־ (to) חָרְמָֽה׃ (Hormah). 45  וַתָּשֻׁ֥בוּ (And you⁺ returned) וַתִּבְכּ֖וּ (and you⁺ wept) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH); וְלֹֽא־ (not) שָׁמַ֤ע (would listen) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) בְּקֹ֣לְכֶ֔ם (to your⁺ voice), וְלֹ֥א (and not) הֶאֱזִ֖ין (give ear) אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺).

46  וַתֵּשְׁב֥וּ (And you⁺ remained) בְקָדֵ֖שׁ (in Kadesh) יָמִ֣ים (days) רַבִּ֑ים (many), כַּיָּמִ֖ים (according to the days) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃ (you⁺ had dwelt).
