Zelophehad’s Daughters Marry
(Numbers 27:1–11)

1  וַֽיִּקְרְב֞וּ (And came near) רָאשֵׁ֣י (the chief) הָֽאָב֗וֹת (fathers) לְמִשְׁפַּ֤חַת (of the clans) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) גִלְעָד֙ (of Gilead) בֶּן־ (son) מָכִ֣יר (of Machir), בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh), מִֽמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֖ת (of the clans) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יוֹסֵ֑ף (of Joseph), וַֽיְדַבְּר֞וּ (and spoke) לִפְנֵ֤י (before the face of) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) וְלִפְנֵ֣י (and before the face of) הַנְּשִׂאִ֔ים (the leaders), רָאשֵׁ֥י (the chief) אָב֖וֹת (fathers) לִבְנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel), 2  וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ (and they said), אֶת־ (-) אֲדֹנִי֙ (My lord) צִוָּ֣ה (commanded) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) לָתֵ֨ת (to give) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֧רֶץ (the land) בְּנַחֲלָ֛ה (as an inheritance) בְּגוֹרָ֖ל (by lot) לִבְנֵ֣י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַֽאדֹנִי֙ (and my lord) צֻוָּ֣ה (was commanded) בַֽיהוָ֔ה (by YHWH) לָתֵ֗ת (to give) אֶֽת־ (-) נַחֲלַ֛ת (the inheritance) צְלָפְחָ֥ד (of Zelophehad) אָחִ֖ינוּ (our brother) לִבְנֹתָֽיו׃ (to his daughters). 3  וְ֠הָיוּ (And if they are) לְאֶחָ֞ד (to one) מִבְּנֵ֨י (of the sons) שִׁבְטֵ֥י (of the tribes) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ (of Israel) לְנָשִׁים֒ (for wives), וְנִגְרְעָ֤ה (and will be taken) נַחֲלָתָן֙ (their inheritance) מִנַּחֲלַ֣ת (from the inheritance) אֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ (of our fathers), וְנוֹסַ֕ף (and it will be added) עַ֚ל (to) נַחֲלַ֣ת (the inheritance) הַמַּטֶּ֔ה (of the tribe) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּהְיֶ֖ינָה (they marry) לָהֶ֑ם (into). וּמִגֹּרַ֥ל (And from the lot) נַחֲלָתֵ֖נוּ (our inheritance) יִגָּרֵֽעַ׃ (it is withdrawn). 4  וְאִם־ (And if) יִהְיֶ֣ה (it is) הַיֹּבֵל֮ (the Jubilee) לִבְנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (of Israel), וְנֽוֹסְפָה֙ (and will be added) נַחֲלָתָ֔ן (their inheritance) עַ֚ל (to) נַחֲלַ֣ת (the inheritance) הַמַּטֶּ֔ה (of the tribe) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּהְיֶ֖ינָה (they marry) לָהֶ֑ם (into). וּמִֽנַּחֲלַת֙ (And from the inheritance) מַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) אֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ (of our fathers) יִגָּרַ֖ע (shall be withdrawn) נַחֲלָתָֽן׃ (their inheritance).

5  וַיְצַ֤ו (And commanded) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) עַל־ (according to) פִּ֥י (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), כֵּ֛ן (Rightly) מַטֵּ֥ה (the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יוֹסֵ֖ף (of Joseph) דֹּבְרִֽים׃ (speaks). 6  זֶ֣ה (This is) הַדָּבָ֞ר (the thing) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּ֣ה (commands) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) לִבְנ֤וֹת (concerning the daughters) צְלָפְחָד֙ (of Zelophehad), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying): לַטּ֥וֹב (To those good) בְּעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם (in their eyes) תִּהְיֶ֣ינָה (let them be) לְנָשִׁ֑ים (for wives), אַ֗ךְ (but only) לְמִשְׁפַּ֛חַת (within the family) מַטֵּ֥ה (of the tribe) אֲבִיהֶ֖ם (of their father) תִּהְיֶ֥ינָה (let them be) לְנָשִֽׁים׃ (for wives). 7  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) תִסֹּ֤ב (shall change hands) נַחֲלָה֙ (the inheritance) לִבְנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מִמַּטֶּ֖ה (from tribe) אֶל־ (to) מַטֶּ֑ה (tribe), כִּ֣י (for) אִ֗ישׁ (a man) בְּנַחֲלַת֙ (of the inheritance) מַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (of his fathers) יִדְבְּק֖וּ (shall cling to) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 8  וְכָל־ (And every) בַּ֞ת (daughter) יֹרֶ֣שֶׁת (who possesses) נַחֲלָ֗ה (an inheritance) מִמַּטּוֹת֮ (in any tribe) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (of Israel), לְאֶחָ֗ד (of one) מִמִּשְׁפַּ֛חַת (of the family) מַטֵּ֥ה (of tribe) אָבִ֖יהָ (of her father), תִּהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) לְאִשָּׁ֑ה (the wife), לְמַ֗עַן (so that) יִֽירְשׁוּ֙ (will have a possession) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אִ֖ישׁ (each) נַחֲלַ֥ת (the inheritance) אֲבֹתָֽיו׃ (of his fathers). 9  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) תִסֹּ֧ב (shall change hands) נַחֲלָ֛ה (inheritance) מִמַּטֶּ֖ה (from one tribe) לְמַטֶּ֣ה (to tribe) אַחֵ֑ר (another), כִּי־ (but) אִישׁ֙ (each) בְּנַ֣חֲלָת֔וֹ (its inheritance) יִדְבְּק֕וּ (shall keep) מַטּ֖וֹת (of the tribes) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

10  כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (As that) צִוָּ֥ה (commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (Moses), כֵּ֥ן (so) עָשׂ֖וּ (did) בְּנ֥וֹת (the daughters) צְלָפְחָֽד׃ (of Zelophehad). 11  וַתִּהְיֶ֜ינָה (And were) מַחְלָ֣ה (Mahlah), תִרְצָ֗ה (Tirzah), וְחָגְלָ֧ה (and Hoglah), וּמִלְכָּ֛ה (and Milcah), וְנֹעָ֖ה (and Noah)— בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) צְלָפְחָ֑ד (of Zelophehad)— לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) דֹדֵיהֶ֖ן (of their father’s brothers) לְנָשִֽׁים׃ (for wives). 12  מִֽמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֛ת (Into the clans) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה (of Manasseh) בֶן־ (son) יוֹסֵ֖ף (of Joseph) הָי֣וּ (they became) לְנָשִׁ֑ים (married), וַתְּהִי֙ (and remained) נַחֲלָתָ֔ן (their inheritance) עַל־ (in) מַטֵּ֖ה (the tribe) מִשְׁפַּ֥חַת (of the family) אֲבִיהֶֽן׃ (of their father).

13  אֵ֣לֶּה (These) הַמִּצְוֺ֞ת (are the commandments) וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֗ים (and the ordinances) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) צִוָּ֧ה (commanded) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (of Moses) אֶל־ (unto) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) בְּעַֽרְבֹ֣ת (in the plains) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab) עַ֖ל (by) יַרְדֵּ֥ן (the Jordan) יְרֵחֽוֹ׃ (near Jericho).
