The Daughters of Zelophehad
(Numbers 36:1–13)

1  וַתִּקְרַ֜בְנָה (And came) בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) צְלָפְחָ֗ד (of Zelophehad) בֶּן־ (son) חֵ֤פֶר (of Hepher), בֶּן־ (son) גִּלְעָד֙ (of Gilead), בֶּן־ (son) מָכִ֣יר (of Machir), בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹ֖ת (from the clans) מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (of Manasseh) בֶן־ (son) יוֹסֵ֑ף (of Joseph)— וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (and these) שְׁמ֣וֹת (were the names) בְּנֹתָ֔יו (of his daughters): מַחְלָ֣ה (Mahlah), נֹעָ֔ה (Noah), וְחָגְלָ֥ה (and Hoglah), וּמִלְכָּ֖ה (and Milcah), וְתִרְצָֽה׃ (and Tirzah). 2  וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֜דְנָה (And they stood) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses) וְלִפְנֵי֙ (and before the face) אֶלְעָזָ֣ר (of Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) וְלִפְנֵ֥י (and before the face of) הַנְּשִׂיאִ֖ם (the leaders) וְכָל־ (and all) הָעֵדָ֑ה (the congregation) פֶּ֥תַח (at the opening) אֹֽהֶל־ (of the Tent) מוֹעֵ֖ד (of Meeting), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 3  אָבִינוּ֮ (Our father) מֵ֣ת (died) בַּמִּדְבָּר֒ (in the wilderness), וְה֨וּא (and he) לֹא־ (not) הָיָ֜ה (was) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הָעֵדָ֗ה (of the congregation) הַנּוֹעָדִ֛ים (of those who gathered together) עַל־ (against) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בַּעֲדַת־ (in company with) קֹ֑רַח (Korah); כִּֽי־ (but) בְחֶטְא֣וֹ (in his own sin) מֵ֔ת (he died). וּבָנִ֖ים (And sons) לֹא־ (not) הָ֥יוּ (he had) לֽוֹ׃ (to him). 4  לָ֣מָּה (Why) יִגָּרַ֤ע (should be removed) שֵׁם־ (the name) אָבִ֙ינוּ֙ (of our father) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֔וֹ (of his family), כִּ֛י (because) אֵ֥ין (no) ל֖וֹ (he had) בֵּ֑ן (son)? תְּנָה־ (Give) לָּ֣נוּ (us) אֲחֻזָּ֔ה (a possession) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) אֲחֵ֥י (of the brothers) אָבִֽינוּ׃ (of our father).

5  וַיַּקְרֵ֥ב (And brought) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁפָּטָ֖ן (their case) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH), 6  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (and spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 7  כֵּ֗ן (Correctly) בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) צְלָפְחָד֮ (of Zelophehad) דֹּבְרֹת֒ (speak). נָתֹ֨ן (Giving) תִּתֵּ֤ן (you must give) לָהֶם֙ (them) אֲחֻזַּ֣ת (a possession) נַחֲלָ֔ה (of inheritance) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) אֲחֵ֣י (of the brothers) אֲבִיהֶ֑ם (of their father), וְהַֽעֲבַרְתָּ֛ (and cause to pass over) אֶת־ (-) נַחֲלַ֥ת (the inheritance) אֲבִיהֶ֖ן (of their father) לָהֶֽן׃ (to them).

8  וְאֶל־ (And to) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) תְּדַבֵּ֣ר (you shall speak), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אִ֣ישׁ (A man) כִּֽי־ (if) יָמ֗וּת (he dies) וּבֵן֙ (and son) אֵ֣ין (has not) ל֔וֹ (unto him), וְהַֽעֲבַרְתֶּ֥ם (then you⁺ shall cause to pass over) אֶת־ (-) נַחֲלָת֖וֹ (his inheritance) לְבִתּֽוֹ׃ (to his daughter). 9  וְאִם־ (And if) אֵ֥ין (has no) ל֖וֹ (he) בַּ֑ת (daughter), וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם (then you⁺ shall give) אֶת־ (-) נַחֲלָת֖וֹ (his inheritance) לְאֶחָיו׃ (to his brothers). 10  וְאִם־ (And if) אֵ֥ין (has no) ל֖וֹ (he) אַחִ֑ים (brothers), וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם (then you⁺ shall give) אֶת־ (-) נַחֲלָת֖וֹ (his inheritance) לַאֲחֵ֥י (to the brothers) אָבִֽיו׃ (of his father). 11  וְאִם־ (And if) אֵ֣ין (has no) אַחִים֮ (brothers) לְאָבִיו֒ (his father), וּנְתַתֶּ֣ם (then you⁺ shall give) אֶת־ (-) נַחֲלָת֗וֹ (his inheritance) לִשְׁאֵר֞וֹ (to his close relative) הַקָּרֹ֥ב (the nearest) אֵלָ֛יו (to him) מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹ (from his family), וְיָרַ֣שׁ (and he shall possess) אֹתָ֑הּ (it). וְֽהָ֨יְתָ֜ה (And it shall be) לִבְנֵ֤י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) לְחֻקַּ֣ת (a statute) מִשְׁפָּ֔ט (of judgment), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) צִוָּ֥ה (has commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ס (Moses).

Moses Requests a Successor
(Deuteronomy 3:23–29)

12  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), עֲלֵ֛ה (Go up) אֶל־ (into) הַ֥ר (mountain) הָעֲבָרִ֖ים (of the Abarim) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וּרְאֵה֙ (and see) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָתַ֖תִּי (I have given) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 13  וְרָאִ֣יתָה (And you shall see) אֹתָ֔הּ (it) וְנֶאֱסַפְתָּ֥ (and shall be gathered) אֶל־ (to) עַמֶּ֖יךָ (your people), גַּם־ (even) אָ֑תָּה (you), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) נֶאֱסַ֖ף (was gathered) אַהֲרֹ֥ן (Aaron) אָחִֽיךָ׃ (your brother). 14  כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ (For) מְרִיתֶ֨ם (you⁺ rebelled against) פִּ֜י (My command) בְּמִדְבַּר־ (in the Wilderness) צִ֗ן (of Zin) בִּמְרִיבַת֙ (in the strife) הָֽעֵדָ֔ה (of the congregation), לְהַקְדִּישֵׁ֥נִי (to show My holiness) בַמַּ֖יִם (at the waters) לְעֵינֵיהֶ֑ם (before their eyes). הֵ֛ם (Those are) מֵֽי־ (the waters) מְרִיבַ֥ת (of Meribah) קָדֵ֖שׁ (at Kadesh) מִדְבַּר־ (in the Wilderness) צִֽן׃פ (of Zin).

15  וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And spoke) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 16  יִפְקֹ֣ד (Let appoint) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) הָרוּחֹ֖ת (of the spirits) לְכָל־ (of all) בָּשָׂ֑ר (flesh), אִ֖ישׁ (a man) עַל־ (over) הָעֵדָֽה׃ (the congregation), 17  אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יֵצֵ֣א (may go out) לִפְנֵיהֶ֗ם (before them) וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and) יָבֹא֙ (go in) לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם (before them), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and who) יוֹצִיאֵ֖ם (may lead them out) וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and) יְבִיאֵ֑ם (bring them in), וְלֹ֤א (that not) תִהְיֶה֙ (may be) עֲדַ֣ת (the congregation) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) כַּצֹּ֕אן (like sheep) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אֵין־ (have not) לָהֶ֖ם (unto them) רֹעֶֽה׃ (a shepherd).

Joshua to Succeed Moses
(Deuteronomy 31:1–8)

18  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), קַח־ (Take) לְךָ֙ (you) אֶת־ (with) יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֔וּן (of Nun), אִ֖ישׁ (a man) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) ר֣וּחַ (the Spirit) בּ֑וֹ (is in), וְסָמַכְתָּ֥ (and lay) אֶת־ (-) יָדְךָ֖ (your hand) עָלָֽיו׃ (on him). 19  וְהַֽעֲמַדְתָּ֣ (And you shall stand) אֹת֗וֹ (him) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) אֶלְעָזָ֣ר (Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) וְלִפְנֵ֖י (and before the face of) כָּל־ (all) הָעֵדָ֑ה (the congregation), וְצִוִּיתָ֥ה (and you shall command) אֹת֖וֹ (him) לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ (in their eyes). 20  וְנָתַתָּ֥ה (And you shall put) מֵהֽוֹדְךָ֖ (some of your authority) עָלָ֑יו (on him), לְמַ֣עַן (that) יִשְׁמְע֔וּ (may be obedient) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַ֖ת (the congregation) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 21  וְלִפְנֵ֨י (And before) אֶלְעָזָ֤ר (Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) יַעֲמֹ֔ד (he shall stand), וְשָׁ֥אַל (and he shall inquire) ל֛וֹ (for him) בְּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט (by the judgment) הָאוּרִ֖ים (of the Urim) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH). עַל־ (At) פִּ֨יו (his word) יֵצְא֜וּ (they shall go out), וְעַל־ (and at) פִּ֣יו (his word) יָבֹ֗אוּ (they shall come in), ה֛וּא (he) וְכָל־ (and all) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (of Israel) אִתּ֖וֹ (with him) וְכָל־ (and all) הָעֵדָֽה׃ (the congregation).

22  וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And did) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֹת֑וֹ (him), וַיִּקַּ֣ח (and He took) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ (Joshua) וַיַּֽעֲמִדֵ֙הוּ֙ (and set him) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face) אֶלְעָזָ֣ר (of Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) וְלִפְנֵ֖י (and before the face) כָּל־ (of all) הָעֵדָֽה׃ (the congregation). 23  וַיִּסְמֹ֧ךְ (And he laid) אֶת־ (-) יָדָ֛יו (his hands) עָלָ֖יו (on him) וַיְצַוֵּ֑הוּ (and commissioned him), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) מֹשֶֽׁה׃פ (of Moses).
