Joshua to Succeed Moses
(Numbers 27:18–23)

1  וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (And went) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (Moses) וַיְדַבֵּ֛ר (and spoke) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֥ים (the words) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel), 2  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them), בֶּן־ (A son) מֵאָה֩ (of a hundred) וְעֶשְׂרִ֨ים (and twenty) שָׁנָ֤ה (years) אָנֹכִי֙ (I am) הַיּ֔וֹם (today); לֹא־ (not) אוּכַ֥ל (I can) ע֖וֹד (anymore) לָצֵ֣את (go out) וְלָב֑וֹא (and come in), וַֽיהוָה֙ (and YHWH) אָמַ֣ר (has said) אֵלַ֔י (to me), לֹ֥א (Not) תַעֲבֹ֖ר (you shall pass over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֥ן (the Jordan) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

3  יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God)— ה֣וּא׀ (He) עֹבֵ֣ר (will pass over) לְפָנֶ֗יךָ (before your faces). הֽוּא־ (He) יַשְׁמִ֞יד (will destroy) אֶת־ (-) הַגּוֹיִ֥ם (the nations) הָאֵ֛לֶּה (these) מִלְּפָנֶ֖יךָ (from before your faces), וִֽירִשְׁתָּ֑ם (and you shall dispossess them). יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ (Joshua)— ה֚וּא (he) עֹבֵ֣ר (will pass over) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before your faces) כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (has spoken) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 4  וְעָשָׂ֤ה (And will do) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשָׂ֗ה (He did) לְסִיח֥וֹן (to Sihon) וּלְע֛וֹג (and Og), מַלְכֵ֥י (the kings) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (of the Amorite), וּלְאַרְצָ֑ם (and to their land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (when) הִשְׁמִ֖יד (He destroyed) אֹתָֽם׃ (them).

5  וּנְתָנָ֥ם (And will give them over) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם (to you⁺), וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם (that you⁺ may do) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) כְּכָל־ (according to every) הַמִּצְוָ֔ה (commandment) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) צִוִּ֖יתִי (I have commanded) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 6  חִזְק֣וּ (Be strong) וְאִמְצ֔וּ (and be of good courage). אַל־ (Not) תִּֽירְא֥וּ (do fear) וְאַל־ (and not) תַּעַרְצ֖וּ (be afraid) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (of them), כִּ֣י׀ (for) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ (your God) ה֚וּא (is He) הַהֹלֵ֣ךְ (who is going) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you). לֹ֥א (Not) יַרְפְּךָ֖ (He will fail you) וְלֹ֥א (and not) יַעַזְבֶֽךָּ׃פ (He will forsake you).

7  וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses) לִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ (to Joshua), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him) לְעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) כָל־ (of all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל (Israel), חֲזַ֣ק (Be strong) וֶאֱמָץ֒ (and be of good courage), כִּ֣י (for) אַתָּ֗ה (you)— תָּבוֹא֙ (you must go) אֶת־ (with) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נִשְׁבַּ֧ע (has sworn) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לַאֲבֹתָ֖ם (to their fathers) לָתֵ֣ת (to give) לָהֶ֑ם (to them), וְאַתָּ֖ה (and you) תַּנְחִילֶ֥נָּה (shall cause to inherit it) אוֹתָֽם׃ (them). 8  וַֽיהוָ֞ה (And YHWH) ה֣וּא׀ (is He) הַהֹלֵ֣ךְ (who is going) לְפָנֶ֗יךָ (before you); ה֚וּא (He) יִהְיֶ֣ה (will be) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you). לֹ֥א (Not) יַרְפְּךָ֖ (He will leave you) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יַֽעַזְבֶ֑ךָּ (forsake you). לֹ֥א (Not) תִירָ֖א (do fear) וְלֹ֥א (and not) תֵחָֽת׃ (be dismayed).

The Reading of the Law
(Nehemiah 8:1–8)

9  וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב (And wrote) מֹשֶׁה֮ (Moses) אֶת־ (-) הַתּוֹרָ֣ה (the law) הַזֹּאת֒ (this) וַֽיִּתְּנָ֗הּ (and delivered it) אֶל־ (to), הַכֹּהֲנִים֙ (the priests) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) לֵוִ֔י (of Levi), הַנֹּ֣שְׂאִ֔ים (who carried) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֖וֹן (the ark) בְּרִ֣ית (of the covenant) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְאֶל־ (and to) כָּל־ (all) זִקְנֵ֖י (the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

10  וַיְצַ֥ו (And commanded) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) אוֹתָ֣ם (them) לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), מִקֵּ֣ץ׀ (From the end) שֶׁ֣בַע (of seven) שָׁנִ֗ים (years), בְּמֹעֵ֛ד (at the appointed time) שְׁנַ֥ת (year) הַשְּׁמִטָּ֖ה (of the release), בְּחַ֥ג (at the Feast) הַסֻּכּֽוֹת׃ (of the Booths), 11  בְּב֣וֹא (when comes) כָל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) לֵרָאוֹת֙ (to appear) אֶת־ (-) פְּנֵי֙ (before the face of) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) בַּמָּק֖וֹם (in the place) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יִבְחָ֑ר (He chooses), תִּקְרָ֞א (you shall read) אֶת־ (-) הַתּוֹרָ֥ה (the law) הַזֹּ֛את (this) נֶ֥גֶד (before) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) בְּאָזְנֵיהֶֽם׃ (in their ears).

12  הַקְהֵ֣ל (Gather together) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֗ם (the people), הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֤ים (the men), וְהַנָּשִׁים֙ (and the women), וְהַטַּ֔ף (and the little ones), וְגֵרְךָ֖ (and the sojourner) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who is) בִּשְׁעָרֶ֑יךָ (within your gates), לְמַ֨עַן (that) יִשְׁמְע֜וּ (they may hear), וּלְמַ֣עַן (and so that) יִלְמְד֗וּ (they may learn) וְיָֽרְאוּ֙ (and fear) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God), וְשָֽׁמְר֣וּ (and) לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת (be careful) אֶת־ (to do) כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵ֖י (the words) הַתּוֹרָ֥ה (of the law) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this), 13  וּבְנֵיהֶ֞ם (and that their children) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) לֹֽא־ (not) יָדְע֗וּ (have known it) יִשְׁמְעוּ֙ (may hear) וְלָ֣מְד֔וּ (and learn) לְיִרְאָ֖ה (to fear) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God), כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִ֗ים (the days) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אַתֶּ֤ם (you⁺) חַיִּים֙ (are living) עַל־ (in) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) אַתֶּ֜ם (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֧ים (are passing over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֛ן (the Jordan) שָׁ֖מָּה (there) לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃פ (to possess).

God Commissions Joshua

14  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), הֵ֣ן (Behold), קָרְב֣וּ (has drawn near) יָמֶיךָ֮ (the day) לָמוּת֒ (when you must die). קְרָ֣א (Call) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ (Joshua) וְהִֽתְיַצְּב֛וּ (and present yourselves) בְּאֹ֥הֶל (in the Tent) מוֹעֵ֖ד (of Meeting), וַאֲצַוֶּ֑נּוּ (so that I may commission him).

וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ (And went) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) וִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (and Joshua) וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֖וּ (and presented themselves) בְּאֹ֥הֶל (in the Tent) מוֹעֵֽד׃ (of Meeting). 15  וַיֵּרָ֧א (And appeared) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בָּאֹ֖הֶל (at the tabernacle) בְּעַמּ֣וּד (in a pillar) עָנָ֑ן (of cloud), וַיַּעֲמֹ֛ד (and stood) עַמּ֥וּד (the pillar) הֶעָנָ֖ן (of cloud) עַל־ (above) פֶּ֥תַח (the door) הָאֹֽהֶל׃ס (of the tent).

16  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), הִנְּךָ֥ (Behold), שֹׁכֵ֖ב (you are lying down) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתֶ֑יךָ (your fathers), וְקָם֩ (and will rise up) הָעָ֨ם (the people) הַזֶּ֜ה (this) וְזָנָ֣ה׀ (and play the prostitute) אַחֲרֵ֣י׀ (with) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) נֵֽכַר־ (of the foreigners) הָאָ֗רֶץ (of the land), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (of which) ה֤וּא (it) בָא־ (goes to be) שָׁ֙מָּה֙ (there) בְּקִרְבּ֔וֹ (in the midst). וַעֲזָבַ֕נִי (And he will forsake Me) וְהֵפֵר֙ (and break) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֔י (My covenant) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) כָּרַ֖תִּי (I have made) אִתּֽוֹ׃ (with him).

17  וְחָרָ֣ה (And will be kindled) אַפִּ֣י (My anger) ב֣וֹ (against them) בַיּוֹם־ (in the day) הַ֠הוּא (that), וַעֲזַבְתִּ֞ים (and I will forsake them), וְהִסְתַּרְתִּ֨י (and I will hide) פָנַ֤י (My face) מֵהֶם֙ (from them), וְהָיָ֣ה (and they will be) לֶֽאֱכֹ֔ל (devoured), וּמְצָאֻ֛הוּ (and will find them) רָע֥וֹת (evils) רַבּ֖וֹת (many) וְצָר֑וֹת (and distresses),

וְאָמַר֙ (so that they will say) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in the day) הַה֔וּא (that), הֲלֹ֗א (Is it not) עַ֣ל (because) כִּֽי־ (that) אֵ֤ין (there is not) אֱלֹהַי֙ (my God) בְּקִרְבִּ֔י (in my midst) מְצָא֖וּנִי (that have found me) הָרָע֥וֹת (the evils) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these).

18  וְאָנֹכִ֗י (And I) הַסְתֵּ֨ר (hiding) אַסְתִּ֤יר (will surely hide) פָּנַי֙ (My face) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in the day) הַה֔וּא (that) עַ֥ל (because) כָּל־ (of all) הָרָעָ֖ה (the evil) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (they have done), כִּ֣י (because) פָנָ֔ה (they have turned) אֶל־ (to) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (gods) אֲחֵרִֽים׃ (other).

19  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) כִּתְב֤וּ (write down) לָכֶם֙ (for yourselves) אֶת־ (-) הַשִּׁירָ֣ה (the song) הַזֹּ֔את (this), וְלַמְּדָ֥הּ (and teach it) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵי־ (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel). שִׂימָ֣הּ (Put it) בְּפִיהֶ֑ם (in their mouths), לְמַ֨עַן (so that) תִּהְיֶה־ (may be) לִּ֜י (for Me) הַשִּׁירָ֥ה (the song) הַזֹּ֛את (this) לְעֵ֖ד (a witness) בִּבְנֵ֥י (against the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 20  כִּֽי־ (When) אֲבִיאֶ֜נּוּ (I have brought them) אֶֽל־ (to) הָאֲדָמָ֣ה׀ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נִשְׁבַּ֣עְתִּי (I have sworn) לַאֲבֹתָ֗יו (to their fathers), זָבַ֤ת (flowing with) חָלָב֙ (milk) וּדְבַ֔שׁ (and honey), וְאָכַ֥ל (and they have eaten) וְשָׂבַ֖ע (and filled themselves) וְדָשֵׁ֑ן (and grown fat), וּפָנָ֞ה (and they will turn) אֶל־ (to) אֱלֹהִ֤ים (gods) אֲחֵרִים֙ (other) וַעֲבָד֔וּם (and serve them), וְנִ֣אֲצ֔וּנִי (and they will spurn Me) וְהֵפֵ֖ר (and break) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִֽי׃ (My covenant). 21  וְ֠הָיָה (And it shall come to pass), כִּֽי־ (when) תִמְצֶ֨אןָ (have come upon) אֹת֜וֹ (him) רָע֣וֹת (evils) רַבּוֹת֮ (many) וְצָרוֹת֒ (and distresses), וְ֠עָנְתָה (that will testify) הַשִּׁירָ֨ה (the song) הַזֹּ֤את (this) לְפָנָיו֙ (to his face) לְעֵ֔ד (as a witness), כִּ֛י (for) לֹ֥א (not) תִשָּׁכַ֖ח (it will be forgotten) מִפִּ֣י (in the mouths) זַרְע֑וֹ (of his seed). כִּ֧י (For) יָדַ֣עְתִּי (I know) אֶת־ (-) יִצְר֗וֹ (the inclination) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) ה֤וּא (he) עֹשֶׂה֙ (is doing), הַיּ֔וֹם (today) בְּטֶ֣רֶם (even before) אֲבִיאֶ֔נּוּ (I bring him) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (of which) נִשְׁבָּֽעְתִּי׃ (I have sworn).

22  וַיִּכְתֹּ֥ב (And wrote) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) הַשִּׁירָ֥ה (the song) הַזֹּ֖את (this) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in the day) הַה֑וּא (that), וַֽיְלַמְּדָ֖הּ (and he taught it) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֥י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

23  וַיְצַ֞ו (And He commanded) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֗וּן (of Nun) וַיֹּאמֶר֮ (and said), חֲזַ֣ק (Be strong) וֶֽאֱמָץ֒ (and be of good courage), כִּ֣י (for) אַתָּ֗ה (you) תָּבִיא֙ (shall bring) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נִשְׁבַּ֣עְתִּי (I swore) לָהֶ֑ם (to them), וְאָנֹכִ֖י (and I) אֶֽהְיֶ֥ה (will be) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you).

The Law Placed in the Ark

24  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass), כְּכַלּ֣וֹת (when had completed) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses) לִכְתֹּ֛ב (writing) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) הַתּוֹרָֽה־ (of the law) הַזֹּ֖את (this) עַל־ (in) סֵ֑פֶר (a book), עַ֖ד (until) תֻּמָּֽם׃ (it was complete), 25  וַיְצַ֤ו (that commanded) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶת־ (-) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites) נֹ֥שְׂאֵ֛י (who carried) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) בְּרִית־ (of the covenant) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 26  לָקֹ֗חַ (Take) אֵ֣ת (-) סֵ֤פֶר (the Book) הַתּוֹרָה֙ (of the Law) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) וְשַׂמְתֶּ֣ם (and put) אֹת֔וֹ (it) מִצַּ֛ד (beside) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) בְּרִית־ (of the covenant) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God), וְהָֽיָה־ (that it may be) שָׁ֥ם (there) בְּךָ֖ (against you) לְעֵֽד׃ (as a witness). 27  כִּ֣י (For) אָנֹכִ֤י (I) יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ (know) אֶֽת־ (-) מֶרְיְךָ֔ (your rebellion), וְאֶֽת־ (and) עָרְפְּךָ֖ (your neck) הַקָּשֶׁ֑ה (stiff). הֵ֣ן (Behold), בְּעוֹדֶנִּי֩ (in my being yet) חַ֨י (alive) עִמָּכֶ֜ם (with you⁺) הַיּ֗וֹם (this day), מַמְרִ֤ים (rebellious) הֱיִתֶם֙ (you⁺ have been) עִם־ (against) יְהֹוָ֔ה (YHWH); וְאַ֖ף (how much more) כִּי־ (surely) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) מוֹתִֽי׃ (my death)?

28  הַקְהִ֧ילוּ (Gather) אֵלַ֛י (to me) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) זִקְנֵ֥י (the elders) שִׁבְטֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ tribes), וְשֹׁטְרֵיכֶ֑ם (and your⁺ officers), וַאֲדַבְּרָ֣ה (that I may speak) בְאָזְנֵיהֶ֗ם (in their ears) אֵ֚ת (-) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) וְאָעִ֣ידָה (and call to witness) בָּ֔ם (against them) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (the heavens) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth). 29  כִּ֣י (For) יָדַ֗עְתִּי (I know) אַחֲרֵ֤י (that after) מוֹתִי֙ (my death), כִּֽי־ (because) הַשְׁחֵ֣ת (becoming corrupt) תַּשְׁחִת֔וּן (you⁺ will become corrupt) וְסַרְתֶּ֣ם (and turn aside) מִן־ (from) הַדֶּ֔רֶךְ (the way) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) צִוִּ֖יתִי (I have commanded) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺), וְקָרָ֨את (and will meet) אֶתְכֶ֤ם (you⁺) הָֽרָעָה֙ (evil) בְּאַחֲרִ֣ית (in latter) הַיָּמִ֔ים (the days), כִּֽי־ (because) תַעֲשׂ֤וּ (you⁺ will do) אֶת־ (-) הָרַע֙ (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) לְהַכְעִיס֖וֹ (to provoke Him to anger) בְּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה (through the work) יְדֵיכֶֽם׃ (of your⁺ hands).

30  וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And spoke) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses) בְּאָזְנֵי֙ (in the ears) כָּל־ (of all) קְהַ֣ל (the assembly) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) הַשִּׁירָ֖ה (of the song) הַזֹּ֑את (this), עַ֖ד (until) תֻּמָּֽם׃פ (they were ended):
