Israel’s Rebellion
(Deuteronomy 1:26–33)

1  וַתִּשָּׂא֙ (And lifted up) כָּל־ (all) הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה (the congregation) וַֽיִּתְּנ֖וּ (and gave forth) אֶת־ (-) קוֹלָ֑ם (their voices), וַיִּבְכּ֥וּ (and wept) הָעָ֖ם (the people) בַּלַּ֥יְלָה (the night) הַהֽוּא׃ (that). 2  וַיִּלֹּ֙נוּ֙ (And complained) עַל־ (against) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) וְעַֽל־ (and) אַהֲרֹ֔ן (Aaron) כֹּ֖ל (all) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַֽיֹּאמְר֨וּ (and said) אֲלֵהֶ֜ם (to them) כָּל־ (whole) הָעֵדָ֗ה (the congregation), לוּ־ (If only) מַ֙תְנוּ֙ (we had died) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), א֛וֹ (or) בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר (in the wilderness) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) לוּ־ (if only) מָֽתְנוּ׃ (we had died)! 3  וְלָמָ֣ה (And why) יְ֠הוָה (YHWH) מֵבִ֨יא (has brought) אֹתָ֜נוּ (us) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֤רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּאת֙ (this) לִנְפֹּ֣ל (to fall) בַּחֶ֔רֶב (by the sword), נָשֵׁ֥ינוּ (our wives) וְטַפֵּ֖נוּ (and children) יִהְי֣וּ (that should become) לָבַ֑ז (victims)? הֲל֧וֹא (Would not) ט֦וֹב (it be better) לָ֖נוּ (for us) שׁ֥וּב (to return) מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ (to Egypt)?

4  וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (And they said) אִ֣ישׁ (a man) אֶל־ (to) אָחִ֑יו (his brother), נִתְּנָ֥ה (Let us set) רֹ֖אשׁ (a leader) וְנָשׁ֥וּבָה (and return) מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ (to Egypt).

5  וַיִּפֹּ֥ל (And fell) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן (and Aaron) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (their faces) לִפְנֵ֕י (before the face of) כָּל־ (all) קְהַ֥ל (the assembly) עֲדַ֖ת (of the congregation) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

6  וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (And Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֗וּן (of Nun) וְכָלֵב֙ (and Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּ֔ה (of Jephunneh), מִן־ (who were among) הַתָּרִ֖ים (those who had spied out) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land), קָרְע֖וּ (tore) בִּגְדֵיהֶֽם׃ (their clothes), 7  וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and they spoke) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַ֥ת (the congregation) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הָאָ֗רֶץ (The land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָבַ֤רְנוּ (we passed through) בָהּ֙ (-) לָת֣וּר (to spy out) אֹתָ֔הּ (-) טוֹבָ֥ה (is good), הָאָ֖רֶץ (a the land) מְאֹ֥ד (very) מְאֹֽד׃ (exceedingly). 8  אִם־ (If) חָפֵ֥ץ (delights) בָּ֙נוּ֙ (in us) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְהֵבִ֤יא (and He will bring) אֹתָ֙נוּ֙ (us) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֔את (this) וּנְתָנָ֖הּ (and give it) לָ֑נוּ (to us), אֶ֕רֶץ (a land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הִ֛וא (it) זָבַ֥ת (flows) חָלָ֖ב (with milk) וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ (and honey). 9  אַ֣ךְ (Only) בַּֽיהוָה֮ (against YHWH) אַל־ (not) תִּמְרֹדוּ֒ (do rebel) וְאַתֶּ֗ם (and you⁺), אַל־ (and not) תִּֽירְאוּ֙ (fear) אֶת־ (-) עַ֣ם (the people) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land), כִּ֥י (for) לַחְמֵ֖נוּ (our bread) הֵ֑ם (they are). סָ֣ר (Has departed) צִלָּ֧ם (their protection) מֵעֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (from them), וַֽיהוָ֥ה (and YHWH is) אִתָּ֖נוּ (with us). אַל־ (Not) תִּירָאֻֽם׃ (do fear them)!

10  וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (And said) כָּל־ (all) הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה (the congregation) לִרְגּ֥וֹם (to stone) אֹתָ֖ם (them) בָּאֲבָנִ֑ים (with stones).

וּכְב֣וֹד (And the glory) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) נִרְאָה֙ (appeared) בְּאֹ֣הֶל (in the Tent) מוֹעֵ֔ד (of Meeting) אֶֽל־ (before) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֖י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel). 11  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), עַד־ (How) אָ֥נָה (long) יְנַאֲצֻ֖נִי (will reject Me) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֑ה (this) וְעַד־ (and how) אָ֙נָה֙ (long) לֹא־ (not) יַאֲמִ֣ינוּ (will they believe) בִ֔י (in Me), בְּכֹל֙ (despite all) הָֽאֹת֔וֹת (the signs) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשִׂ֖יתִי (I have performed) בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃ (among them). 12  אַכֶּ֥נּוּ (I will strike them) בַדֶּ֖בֶר (with the pestilence) וְאוֹרִשֶׁ֑נּוּ (and disinherit them), וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ (and I will make) אֹֽתְךָ֔ (of you) לְגוֹי־ (a nation) גָּד֥וֹל (greater) וְעָצ֖וּם (and mightier) מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ (than they).

Moses Intercedes for Israel

13  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וְשָׁמְע֣וּ (And will hear it) מִצְרַ֔יִם (the Egyptians), כִּֽי־ (for) הֶעֱלִ֧יתָ (You brought up) בְכֹחֲךָ֛ (by Your power) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֥ם (the people) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) מִקִּרְבּֽוֹ׃ (from among them). 14  וְאָמְר֗וּ (And they will tell) אֶל־ (to) יוֹשֵׁב֮ (the dwellers) הָאָ֣רֶץ (of the land) הַזֹּאת֒ (this). שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ (They have heard) כִּֽי־ (that) אַתָּ֣ה (You) יְהוָ֔ה (O YHWH) בְּקֶ֖רֶב (are among) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עַ֨יִן (eye) בְּעַ֜יִן (to eye) נִרְאָ֣ה׀ (are seen) אַתָּ֣ה (You) יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), וַעֲנָֽנְךָ֙ (and Your cloud) עֹמֵ֣ד (stands) עֲלֵהֶ֔ם (above them), וּבְעַמֻּ֣ד (and in a pillar) עָנָ֗ן (of a cloud) אַתָּ֨ה (You) הֹלֵ֤ךְ (go) לִפְנֵיהֶם֙ (before their faces) יוֹמָ֔ם (by day) וּבְעַמּ֥וּד (and in pillar) אֵ֖שׁ (of fire) לָֽיְלָה׃ (by night).

15  וְהֵמַתָּ֛ה (And if You kill) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֥ם (the people) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) כְּאִ֣ישׁ (as man), אֶחָ֑ד (one) וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ (and will speak) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שָׁמְע֥וּ (have heard) אֶֽת־ (-) שִׁמְעֲךָ֖ (of Your fame), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 16  מִבִּלְתִּ֞י (Because not) יְכֹ֣לֶת (was able) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) לְהָבִיא֙ (to bring) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נִשְׁבַּ֣ע (He swore) לָהֶ֑ם (to give them), וַיִּשְׁחָטֵ֖ם (therefore He killed them) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness’).

17  וְעַתָּ֕ה (And now), יִגְדַּל־ (let be great), נָ֖א (please), כֹּ֣חַ (the power) אֲדֹנָ֑י (of my Lord), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ (You have spoken), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 18  יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֶ֤רֶךְ (is slow) אַפַּ֙יִם֙ (anger), וְרַב־ (and abundant) חֶ֔סֶד (in loving devotion), נֹשֵׂ֥א (forgiving) עָוֺ֖ן (iniquity) וָפָ֑שַׁע (and transgression), וְנַקֵּה֙ (and by means) לֹ֣א (no) יְנַקֶּ֔ה (He aquits), פֹּקֵ֞ד (visiting) עֲוֺ֤ן (the iniquity) אָבוֹת֙ (of the fathers) עַל־ (on) בָּנִ֔ים (the sons) עַל־ (on) שִׁלֵּשִׁ֖ים (the thirds) וְעַל־ (and on) רִבֵּעִֽים׃ (the fourths).

19  סְלַֽח־ (Pardon), נָ֗א (please), לַעֲוֺ֛ן (the iniquity) הָעָ֥ם (of the people) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) כְּגֹ֣דֶל (according to the greatness) חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ (of Your loving devotion), וְכַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and as) נָשָׂ֙אתָה֙ (You have forgiven) לָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) מִמִּצְרַ֖יִם (from Egypt) וְעַד־ (and even until) הֵֽנָּה׃ (now).

God’s Forgiveness and Judgment
(Deuteronomy 1:34–40)

20  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), סָלַ֖חְתִּי (I have pardoned) כִּדְבָרֶֽךָ׃ (according to your word), 21  וְאוּלָ֖ם (but truly as) חַי־ (live) אָ֑נִי (I), וְיִמָּלֵ֥א (and shall be filled) כְבוֹד־ (with the glory) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth), 22  כִּ֣י (indeed) כָל־ (all) הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים (these men) הָרֹאִ֤ים (who have seen) אֶת־ (-) כְּבֹדִי֙ (My glory) וְאֶת־ (and) אֹ֣תֹתַ֔י (the signs) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשִׂ֥יתִי (I did) בְמִצְרַ֖יִם (in Egypt) וּבַמִּדְבָּ֑ר (and in the wilderness), וַיְנַסּ֣וּ (and have put to the test) אֹתִ֗י (Me) זֶ֚ה (this is) עֶ֣שֶׂר (ten) פְּעָמִ֔ים (times), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמְע֖וּ (have heeded) בְּקוֹלִֽי׃ (My voice), 23  אִם־ (not) יִרְאוּ֙ (they shall see) אֶת־ (surely) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי (I swore) לַאֲבֹתָ֑ם (to their fathers). וְכָל־ (And any of those) מְנַאֲצַ֖י (who rejected Me) לֹ֥א (not) יִרְאֽוּהָ׃ (shall see it).

24  וְעַבְדִּ֣י (And My servant) כָלֵ֗ב (Caleb), עֵ֣קֶב (because) הָֽיְתָ֞ה (he has) ר֤וּחַ (a spirit) אַחֶ֙רֶת֙ (different) עִמּ֔וֹ (in him) וַיְמַלֵּ֖א (and has fully followed) אַחֲרָ֑י (Me), וַהֲבִֽיאֹתִ֗יו (I will bring) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּ֣א (he went) שָׁ֔מָּה (into), וְזַרְע֖וֹ (and his seed) יוֹרִשֶֽׁנָּה׃ (shall inherit it).

25  וְהָֽעֲמָלֵקִ֥י (And the Amalekite) וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (and the Canaanite) יוֹשֵׁ֣ב (are dwelling) בָּעֵ֑מֶק (in the valley) מָחָ֗ר (tomorrow); פְּנ֨וּ (turn) וּסְע֥וּ (and move out) לָכֶ֛ם (for yourselves) הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר (into the wilderness) דֶּ֥רֶךְ (by the Way) יַם־ (of the Sea) סֽוּף׃פ (Red).

26  וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses) וְאֶֽל־ (and) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 27  עַד־ (How) מָתַ֗י (long) לָעֵדָ֤ה (the congregation) הָֽרָעָה֙ (evil) הַזֹּ֔את (this) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (who) הֵ֥מָּה (they) מַלִּינִ֖ים (complain) עָלָ֑י (against Me) אֶת־ (-) תְּלֻנּ֞וֹת (the complaints) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) הֵ֧מָּה (they) מַלִּינִ֛ים (make) עָלַ֖י (against Me) שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃ (I have heard). 28  אֱמֹ֣ר (Say) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them), חַי־ (live) אָ֙נִי֙ (as I), נְאֻם־ (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), אִם־ (truly) לֹ֕א (very) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּבַּרְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ have spoken) בְּאָזְנָ֑י (in My hearing), כֵּ֖ן (so) אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה (will I do) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺). 29  בַּמִּדְבָּ֣ר (In the wilderness) הַ֠זֶּה (this) יִפְּל֨וּ (shall fall) פִגְרֵיכֶ֜ם (your⁺ corpses) וְכָל־ (and all) פְּקֻדֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ numbered) לְכָל־ (according to entire) מִסְפַּרְכֶ֔ם (your⁺ number), מִבֶּ֛ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (of twenty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וָמָ֑עְלָה (and above), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) הֲלִֽינֹתֶ֖ם (you⁺ have grumbled) עָלָֽי׃ (against Me).

30  אִם־ (By no means) אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺) תָּבֹ֣אוּ (shall enter) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) נָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ (I lifted up) אֶת־ (-) יָדִ֔י (My hand) לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן (to make dwell) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) בָּ֑הּ (in it), כִּ֚י (except) אִם־ (for) כָּלֵ֣ב (Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּ֔ה (of Jephunneh) וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (and Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נֽוּן׃ (of Nun). 31  וְטַ֨פְּכֶ֔ם (And your⁺ little ones), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ said) לָבַ֣ז (victims) יִהְיֶ֑ה (would be), וְהֵבֵיאתִ֣י (and will I bring in) אֹתָ֔ם (-) וְיָֽדְעוּ֙ (and they shall know) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) מְאַסְתֶּ֖ם (have despised) בָּֽהּ׃ (you). 32  וּפִגְרֵיכֶ֖ם (And as for your⁺ carcasses), אַתֶּ֑ם (you⁺) יִפְּל֖וּ (shall fall) בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר (in the wilderness) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

33  וּ֠בְנֵיכֶם (And your⁺ sons) יִהְי֨וּ (wandering) רֹעִ֤ים (shall be shepherds) בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ (in the wilderness) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (forty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years), וְנָשְׂא֖וּ (and shall bear the brunt) אֶת־ (of) זְנוּתֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ infidelity), עַד־ (until) תֹּ֥ם (are consumed) פִּגְרֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ carcasses) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness). 34  בְּמִסְפַּ֨ר (By the number) הַיָּמִ֜ים (of the days) אֲשֶׁר־ (in which) תַּרְתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) אֶת־ (spied out) הָאָרֶץ֮ (the land), אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (forty) יוֹם֒ (days)— י֣וֹם (for) לַשָּׁנָ֞ה (years) י֣וֹם (each day) לַשָּׁנָ֗ה (one year)— תִּשְׂאוּ֙ (you⁺ shall bear) אֶת־ (-) עֲוֺנֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ guilt) אַרְבָּעִ֖ים (forty) שָׁנָ֑ה (years), וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ shall know) אֶת־ (-) תְּנוּאָתִֽי׃ (My rejection).

35  אֲנִ֣י (I), יְהוָה֮ (YHWH), דִּבַּרְתִּי֒ (have spoken), אִם־ (surely) לֹ֣א׀ (not) זֹ֣את (this) אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֗ה (I will do so) לְכָל־ (to all) הָעֵדָ֤ה (the congregation) הָֽרָעָה֙ (evil) הַזֹּ֔את (this) הַנּוֹעָדִ֖ים (who are gathered together) עָלָ֑י (against Me). בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר (In the wilderness) הַזֶּ֛ה (this) יִתַּ֖מּוּ (they shall be consumed), וְשָׁ֥ם (and there) יָמֻֽתוּ׃ (they shall die).

The Plague on the Ten Spies

36  וְהָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים (And the men) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) שָׁלַ֥ח (sent) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) לָת֣וּר (to spy out) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land), וַיָּשֻׁ֗בוּ (and who returned), וַיִּלּוֹנוּ (and made complain) עָלָיו֙ (against him) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה (the congregation) לְהוֹצִ֥יא (by bringing) דִבָּ֖ה (a bad report) עַל־ (of) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land)— 37  וַיָּמֻ֙תוּ֙ (and died) הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים (those very men) מוֹצִאֵ֥י (who brought) דִבַּת־ (report) הָאָ֖רֶץ (about the land) רָעָ֑ה (evil), בַּמַּגֵּפָ֖ה (by the plague) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 38  וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (And Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֔וּן (of Nun) וְכָלֵ֖ב (and Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּ֑ה (of Jephunneh) חָיוּ֙ (remained alive) מִן־ (of) הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים (the men), הָהֵ֔ם (those) הַֽהֹלְכִ֖ים (who went) לָת֥וּר (to spy out) אֶת־ (-) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land).

39  וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר (And told) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) אֶֽל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֖י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַיִּֽתְאַבְּל֥וּ (and mourned) הָעָ֖ם (the people) מְאֹֽד׃ (greatly).

The Defeat at Hormah
(Deuteronomy 1:41–46)

40  וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּ (And they rose early) בַבֹּ֔קֶר (in the morning) וַיַּֽעֲל֥וּ (and went up) אֶל־ (to) רֹאשׁ־ (the top) הָהָ֖ר (of the mountain), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הִנֶּ֗נּוּ (Here we are) וְעָלִ֛ינוּ (and we will go up) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּק֛וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אָמַ֥ר (has promised) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH). כִּ֥י (For) חָטָֽאנוּ׃ (we have sinned).

41  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said), מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) לָ֥מָּה (Why) זֶּ֛ה (is this) אַתֶּ֥ם (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֖ים (are passing over) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֣י (the mouth) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH)? וְהִ֖וא (And for that) לֹ֥א (not) תִצְלָֽח׃ (will succeed). 42  אַֽל־ (Not) תַּעֲל֔וּ (do go up), כִּ֛י (for) אֵ֥ין (not) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH is) בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם (among you⁺), וְלֹא֙ (lest) תִּנָּ֣גְפ֔וּ (you⁺ be struck down) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face of) אֹיְבֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ enemies). 43  כִּי֩ (For) הָעֲמָלֵקִ֨י (the Amalekite) וְהַכְּנַעֲנִ֥י (and the Canaanite are) שָׁם֙ (there) לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם (before you⁺), וּנְפַלְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ shall fall) בֶּחָ֑רֶב (by the sword), כִּֽי־ (for) עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֤ן (thus) שַׁבְתֶּם֙ (you⁺ have turned away) מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י (from) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְלֹא־ (and not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (will be) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עִמָּכֶֽם׃ (with you⁺).

44  וַיַּעְפִּ֕לוּ (And they presumed) לַעֲל֖וֹת (to go up) אֶל־ (unto) רֹ֣אשׁ (the top) הָהָ֑ר (of the hill); וַאֲר֤וֹן (and the ark) בְּרִית־ (of the covenant) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), וּמֹשֶׁ֔ה (and not Moses), לֹא־ (neither) מָ֖שׁוּ (departed) מִקֶּ֥רֶב (from the midst) הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ (of the camp). 45  וַיֵּ֤רֶד (And came down), הָעֲמָלֵקִי֙ (the Amalekite) וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (and the Canaanite) הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב (who dwelt) בָּהָ֣ר (in the mountain) הַה֑וּא (that), וַיַּכּ֥וּם (and attacked them) וַֽיַּכְּת֖וּם (and drove them back) עַד־ (as far as) הַֽחָרְמָֽה׃פ (Hormah).
