The Defeat of Arad

1  וַיִּשְׁמַ֞ע (And heard) הַכְּנַעֲנִ֤י (the Canaanite), מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) עֲרָד֙ (of Arad), יֹשֵׁ֣ב (who dwelt in) הַנֶּ֔גֶב (the Negev), כִּ֚י (that) בָּ֣א (was coming) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) דֶּ֖רֶךְ (on the road) הָאֲתָרִ֑ים (of the Atharim); וַיִּלָּ֙חֶם֙ (and he fought) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (against Israel) וַיִּ֥שְׁבְּ׀ (and took some) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (of them) שֶֽׁבִי׃ (captive). 2  וַיִּדַּ֨ר (And made) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (Israel) נֶ֛דֶר (a vow) לַֽיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH), וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and said), אִם־ (If) נָתֹ֨ן (delivering) תִּתֵּ֜ן (You will deliver) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֤ם (the people) הַזֶּה֙ (this) בְּיָדִ֔י (into my hand), וְהַֽחֲרַמְתִּ֖י (then I will devote to destruction) אֶת־ (-) עָרֵיהֶֽם׃ (their cities).

3  וַיִּשְׁמַ֨ע (And listened) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) בְּק֣וֹל (to the voice) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), וַיִּתֵּן֙ (and delivered up) אֶת־ (-) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (the Canaanite). וַיַּחֲרֵ֥ם (And they devoted to destruction) אֶתְהֶ֖ם (them) וְאֶת־ (and) עָרֵיהֶ֑ם (their cities). וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And was called) שֵׁם־ (the name) הַמָּק֖וֹם (of the place) חָרְמָֽה׃פ (Hormah).

The Bronze Serpent

4  וַיִּסְע֞וּ (And they journeyed) מֵהֹ֤ר (from Hor) הָהָר֙ (the Mount) דֶּ֣רֶךְ (by the way) יַם־ (of the Sea) ס֔וּף (Red), לִסְבֹ֖ב (to go around) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) אֱד֑וֹם (of Edom). וַתִּקְצַ֥ר (And was short) נֶֽפֶשׁ־ (the soul) הָעָ֖ם (of the people) בַּדָּֽרֶךְ׃ (on the way). 5  וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And spoke) הָעָ֗ם (the people) בֵּֽאלֹהִים֮ (against God) וּבְמֹשֶׁה֒ (and against Moses), לָמָ֤ה (Why) הֶֽעֱלִיתֻ֙נוּ֙ (have you⁺ brought us up) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (out of Egypt) לָמ֖וּת (to die) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness)? כִּ֣י (For) אֵ֥ין (not) לֶ֙חֶם֙ (there is food), וְאֵ֣ין (and no) מַ֔יִם (water), וְנַפְשֵׁ֣נוּ (and our soul) קָ֔צָה (loathes) בַּלֶּ֖חֶם (the bread) הַקְּלֹקֵֽל׃ (this worthless).

6  וַיְשַׁלַּ֨ח (And sent) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) בָּעָ֗ם (among the people), אֵ֚ת (-) הַנְּחָשִׁ֣ים (serpents) הַשְּׂרָפִ֔ים (fiery) וַֽיְנַשְּׁכ֖וּ (and they bit) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֑ם (the people); וַיָּ֥מָת (and died) עַם־ (people) רָ֖ב (many) מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

7  וַיָּבֹא֩ (And came) הָעָ֨ם (the people) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses) וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (and said), חָטָ֗אנוּ (We have sinned), כִּֽי־ (for) דִבַּ֤רְנוּ (we have spoken) בַֽיהוָה֙ (against YHWH) וָבָ֔ךְ (and against you). הִתְפַּלֵּל֙ (Pray) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְיָסֵ֥ר (that He take away) מֵעָלֵ֖ינוּ (from us) אֶת־ (-) הַנָּחָ֑שׁ (the serpents). וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל (And prayed) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) בְּעַ֥ד (for) הָעָֽם׃ (the people).

8  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), עֲשֵׂ֤ה (Make) לְךָ֙ (for yourself) שָׂרָ֔ף (a fiery serpent) וְשִׂ֥ים (and set) אֹת֖וֹ (it) עַל־ (on) נֵ֑ס (a pole); וְהָיָה֙ (and it shall come to pass that) כָּל־ (anyone) הַנָּשׁ֔וּךְ (who is bitten), וְרָאָ֥ה (and he looks at) אֹת֖וֹ (it), וָחָֽי׃ (and he shall live). 9  וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (And made) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) נְחַ֣שׁ (a serpent) נְחֹ֔שֶׁת (bronze) וַיְשִׂמֵ֖הוּ (and put it) עַל־ (on) הַנֵּ֑ס (a pole). וְהָיָ֗ה (And it came to pass that) אִם־ (if) נָשַׁ֤ךְ (had bitten) הַנָּחָשׁ֙ (a serpent) אֶת־ (-) אִ֔ישׁ (anyone) וְהִבִּ֛יט (and he looked) אֶל־ (unto) נְחַ֥שׁ (the serpent) הַנְּחֹ֖שֶׁת (bronze), וָחָֽי׃ (and he lived).

The Journey to Moab

10  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And set out) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּאֹבֹֽת׃ (in Oboth). 11  וַיִּסְע֖וּ (And they set out) מֵאֹבֹ֑ת (from Oboth) וַֽיַּחֲנ֞וּ (and camped) בְּעִיֵּ֣י (at Iye-) הָֽעֲבָרִ֗ים (abarim), בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ (in the wilderness) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that is) עַל־ (east) פְּנֵ֣י (of) מוֹאָ֔ב (Moab) מִמִּזְרַ֖ח (toward) הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ (the sunrise). 12  מִשָּׁ֖ם (From there) נָסָ֑עוּ (they set out) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בְּנַ֥חַל (in the Valley) זָֽרֶד׃ (of Zered). 13  מִשָּׁם֮ (From there) נָסָעוּ֒ (they set out) וַֽיַּחֲנ֗וּ (and camped) מֵעֵ֤בֶר (on the other side) אַרְנוֹן֙ (of the Arnon), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which is) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness) הַיֹּצֵ֖א (that extends) מִגְּב֣וּל (from the border) הָֽאֱמֹרִ֑י (of the Amorite).

כִּ֤י (For) אַרְנוֹן֙ (the Arnon) גְּב֣וּל (is the border) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab), בֵּ֥ין (between) מוֹאָ֖ב (Moab) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) הָאֱמֹרִֽי׃ (the Amorite). 14  עַל־ (Upon) כֵּן֙ (thus) יֵֽאָמַ֔ר (it is said) בְּסֵ֖פֶר (in the Book) מִלְחֲמֹ֣ת (of the Wars) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) אֶת־ (-):

וָהֵ֣ב (Waheb) בְּסוּפָ֔ה (in Suphah),

וְאֶת־ (and) הַנְּחָלִ֖ים (the brooks) אַרְנֽוֹן׃ (of the Arnon),

15  וְאֶ֙שֶׁד֙ (and the slope) הַנְּחָלִ֔ים (of the brooks)

אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָטָ֖ה (reaches) לְשֶׁ֣בֶת (to the dwelling) עָ֑ר (of Ar),

וְנִשְׁעַ֖ן (and lies) לִגְב֥וּל (on the border) מוֹאָֽב׃ (of Moab).

16  וּמִשָּׁ֖ם (And from there) בְּאֵ֑רָה (they went to Beer); הִ֣וא (it is) הַבְּאֵ֗ר (the well) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (where) אָמַ֤ר (said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְמֹשֶׁ֔ה (to Moses), אֱסֹף֙ (Gather together) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֔ם (the people) וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה (and I will give) לָהֶ֖ם (them) מָֽיִם׃ס (water). 17  אָ֚ז (Then) יָשִׁ֣יר (sang) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) אֶת־ (-) הַשִּׁירָ֖ה (the song) הַזֹּ֑את (this):

עֲלִ֥י (Spring up), בְאֵ֖ר (O well),

עֱנוּ־ (all of you sing) לָֽהּ׃ (to it).

18  בְּאֵ֞ר (The well) חֲפָר֣וּהָ (dug) שָׂרִ֗ים (the princes),

כָּר֙וּהָ֙ (hollowed it out) נְדִיבֵ֣י (the nobles) הָעָ֔ם (of the nation)

בִּמְחֹקֵ֖ק (by the lawgiver),

בְּמִשְׁעֲנֹתָ֑ם (by their staffs).

וּמִמִּדְבָּ֖ר (And from the wilderness) מַתָּנָֽה׃ (they went to Mattanah), 19  וּמִמַּתָּנָ֖ה (and from Mattanah) נַחֲלִיאֵ֑ל (to Nahaliel), וּמִנַּחֲלִיאֵ֖ל (and from Nahaliel) בָּמֽוֹת׃ (to Bamoth), 20  וּמִבָּמ֗וֹת (and from Bamoth) הַגַּיְא֙ (in the valley), אֲשֶׁר֙ (that is) בִּשְׂדֵ֣ה (in the country) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab), רֹ֖אשׁ (to the top) הַפִּסְגָּ֑ה (of Pisgah), וְנִשְׁקָ֖פָה (and which looks) עַל־ (toward) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הַיְשִׁימֹֽן׃פ (of Jeshimon).

The Defeat of Sihon
(Deuteronomy 2:24–37)

21  וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (And sent) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) מַלְאָכִ֔ים (messengers) אֶל־ (to) סִיחֹ֥ן (Sihon) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (of the Amorite), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 22  אֶעְבְּרָ֣ה (Let me pass) בְאַרְצֶ֗ךָ (through your land). לֹ֤א (Not) נִטֶּה֙ (we will turn aside) בְּשָׂדֶ֣ה (into a field) וּבְכֶ֔רֶם (or into a vineyard); לֹ֥א (not) נִשְׁתֶּ֖ה (we will drink) מֵ֣י (the water) בְאֵ֑ר (of a well). בְּדֶ֤רֶךְ (By the Highway) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the King) נֵלֵ֔ךְ (we will go), עַ֥ד (until) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (that) נַעֲבֹ֖ר (we have passed through) גְּבֻלֶֽךָ׃ (your territory).

23  וְלֹא־ (And not) נָתַ֨ן (would allow) סִיחֹ֣ן (Sihon) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ (Israel) עֲבֹ֣ר (to pass) בִּגְבֻלוֹ֒ (through his territory). וַיֶּאֱסֹ֨ף (And gathered together) סִיחֹ֜ן (Sihon) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) עַמּ֗וֹ (his people) וַיֵּצֵ֞א (and went out) לִקְרַ֤את (against) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) הַמִּדְבָּ֔רָה (in the wilderness), וַיָּבֹ֖א (and he came) יָ֑הְצָה (to Jahaz) וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם (and fought) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (against Israel). 24  וַיַּכֵּ֥הוּ (And defeated him) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) לְפִי־ (by the mouth) חָ֑רֶב (of the sword), וַיִּירַ֨שׁ (and took possession) אֶת־ (of) אַרְצ֜וֹ (his land) מֵֽאַרְנֹ֗ן (from the Arnon) עַד־ (to) יַבֹּק֙ (the Jabbok), עַד־ (as far as) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) עַמּ֔וֹן (of Ammon); כִּ֣י (for) עַ֔ז (was strong) גְּב֖וּל (the border) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) עַמּֽוֹן׃ (of Ammon).

25  וַיִּקַּח֙ (And took) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הֶעָרִ֖ים (the cities) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב (and dwelt) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) בְּכָל־ (in all) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite), בְּחֶשְׁבּ֖וֹן (in Heshbon), וּבְכָל־ (and in all) בְּנֹתֶֽיהָ׃ (its villages). 26  כִּ֣י (For) חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן (Heshbon) עִ֗יר (the city) סִיחֹ֛ן (of Sihon) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (of the Amorite) הִ֑וא (was), וְה֣וּא (and he) נִלְחַ֗ם (had fought) בְּמֶ֤לֶךְ (against king) מוֹאָב֙ (of Moab) הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן (the former) וַיִּקַּ֧ח (and had taken) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אַרְצ֛וֹ (his land) מִיָּד֖וֹ (from his hand) עַד־ (as far as) אַרְנֹֽן׃ (the Arnon). 27  עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֛ן (thus) יֹאמְר֥וּ (say) הַמֹּשְׁלִ֖ים (the speakers of proverbs):

בֹּ֣אוּ (Come) חֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן (to Heshbon),

תִּבָּנֶ֥ה (let it be built); וְתִכּוֹנֵ֖ן (and let be repaired) עִ֥יר (the city) סִיחֽוֹן׃ (of Sihon).

28  כִּי־ (For) אֵשׁ֙ (fire) יָֽצְאָ֣ה (went out) מֵֽחֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן (from Heshbon),

לֶהָבָ֖ה (a flame) מִקִּרְיַ֣ת (from the city) סִיחֹ֑ן (of Sihon).

אָֽכְלָה֙ (It consumed) עָ֣ר (Ar) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab),

בַּעֲלֵ֖י (the lords) בָּמ֥וֹת (of the heights) אַרְנֹֽן׃ (of the Arnon).

29  אוֹי־ (Woe) לְךָ֣ (to you) מוֹאָ֔ב (O Moab)!

אָבַ֖דְתָּ (You have perished), עַם־ (O people) כְּמ֑וֹשׁ (of Chemosh)!

נָתַ֨ן (He has given) בָּנָ֤יו (his sons) פְּלֵיטִם֙ (as fugitives),

וּבְנֹתָ֣יו (and his daughters) בַּשְּׁבִ֔ית (into captivity)

לְמֶ֥לֶךְ (to a king) אֱמֹרִ֖י (of the Amorite), סִיחֽוֹן׃ (Sihon).

30  וַנִּירָ֛ם (And we have shot at them);

אָבַ֥ד (has perished) חֶשְׁבּ֖וֹן (Heshbon) עַד־ (as far as) דִּיב֑וֹן (Dibon).

וַנַּשִּׁ֣ים (And we laid waste) עַד־ (as far as) נֹ֔פַח (Nophah),

אֲשֶׁ֖רׄ (which is) עַד־ (as far as) מֵֽידְבָֽא׃ (Medeba).

The Defeat of Og
(Deuteronomy 3:1–11)

31  וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (And dwelt) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) בְּאֶ֖רֶץ (in the land) הָאֱמֹרִֽי׃ (of the Amorite). 32  וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (And sent) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) לְרַגֵּ֣ל (to spy out) אֶת־ (-) יַעְזֵ֔ר (Jazer), וַֽיִּלְכְּד֖וּ (and they took) בְּנֹתֶ֑יהָ (its villages) וַיִּירֶשׁ (and drove out) אֶת־ (-) הָאֱמֹרִ֥י (the Amorite) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

33  וַיִּפְנוּ֙ (And they turned) וַֽיַּעֲל֔וּ (and went up) דֶּ֖רֶךְ (by the way to) הַבָּשָׁ֑ן (Bashan); וַיֵּצֵ֣א (and went out) עוֹג֩ (Og) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֨ן (of Bashan) לִקְרָאתָ֜ם (against them)— ה֧וּא (he) וְכָל־ (and all) עַמּ֛וֹ (his people)— לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (to battle) אֶדְרֶֽעִי׃ (at Edrei).

34  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses), אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֣א (do fear) אֹת֔וֹ (him), כִּ֣י (for) בְיָדְךָ֞ (into your hand) נָתַ֧תִּי (I have delivered) אֹת֛וֹ (him) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) עַמּ֖וֹ (his people) וְאֶת־ (and) אַרְצ֑וֹ (his land). וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ (And you shall do) לּ֔וֹ (to him) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשִׂ֗יתָ (you did) לְסִיחֹן֙ (to Sihon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (dwelt) בְּחֶשְׁבּֽוֹן׃ (at Heshbon).

35  וַיַּכּ֨וּ (And they defeated) אֹת֤וֹ (him) וְאֶת־ (and) בָּנָיו֙ (his sons) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) עַמּ֔וֹ (his people), עַד־ (until) בִּלְתִּ֥י (not) הִשְׁאִֽיר־ (there was left) ל֖וֹ (to him) שָׂרִ֑יד (a survivor). וַיִּֽירְשׁ֖וּ (And they took possession) אֶת־ (of) אַרְצֽוֹ׃ (his land).
