The Covenant at Horeb

1  וַיִּקְרָ֣א (And called) מֹשֶׁה֮ (Moses) אֶל־ (unto) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (Israel), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them):

שְׁמַ֤ע (Hear), יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (O Israel), אֶת־ (-) הַחֻקִּ֣ים (the statutes) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים (the ordinances) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) דֹּבֵ֥ר (speak) בְּאָזְנֵיכֶ֖ם (in your⁺ hearing) הַיּ֑וֹם (today), וּלְמַדְתֶּ֣ם (that you⁺ may learn) אֹתָ֔ם (them) וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם (and be careful) לַעֲשֹׂתָֽם׃ (to observe them). 2  יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ (our God) כָּרַ֥ת (made) עִמָּ֛נוּ (with us) בְּרִ֖ית (a covenant) בְּחֹרֵֽב׃ (in Horeb).

3  לֹ֣א (Not) אֶת־ (with) אֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ (our fathers) כָּרַ֥ת (did make) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּרִ֣ית (the covenant) הַזֹּ֑את (this), כִּ֣י (but) אִתָּ֗נוּ (with us)— אֲנַ֨חְנוּ (we), אֵ֥לֶּה (these) פֹ֛ה (here) הַיּ֖וֹם (today), כֻּלָּ֥נוּ (all of us) חַיִּֽים׃ (who are alive). 4  פָּנִ֣ים׀ (Face) בְּפָנִ֗ים (to face) דִּבֶּ֨ר (spoke) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) עִמָּכֶ֛ם (with you⁺) בָּהָ֖ר (on the mountain) מִתּ֥וֹךְ (out of the midst) הָאֵֽשׁ׃ (of the fire).

The Ten Commandments
(Exodus 20:1–17)

5  אָ֠נֹכִי (I) עֹמֵ֨ד (stood) בֵּין־ (between) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) וּבֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ (and between you⁺) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֔וא (that), לְהַגִּ֥יד (to declare) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) דְּבַ֣ר (the word) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH); כִּ֤י (for) יְרֵאתֶם֙ (you⁺ were afraid) מִפְּנֵ֣י (because) הָאֵ֔שׁ (of the fire), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) עֲלִיתֶ֥ם (you⁺ did go) בָּהָ֖ר (up the mountain). לֵאמֹֽר׃ס (He said), 6  אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I am) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God), אֲשֶׁ֧ר (who) הוֹצֵאתִ֛יךָ (brought you) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), מִבֵּ֣ית (out of the house) עֲבָדִֽ֑ים׃ (of slavery).

7  לֹ֣א (Not) יִהְיֶ֥ה־ (shall have) לְךָ֛֩ (you) אֱלֹהִ֥֨ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֖֜ים (other) עַל־ (before) פָּנָֽ֗יַ׃ (Me).

8  לֹֽ֣א־ (Not) תַעֲשֶׂ֥ה־ (you shall make) לְךָ֥֣ (for yourself) פֶ֣֙סֶל֙׀ (a carved image) כָּל־ (any) תְּמוּנָ֔֡ה (likeness) אֲשֶׁ֤֣ר (that is) בַּשָּׁמַ֣֙יִם֙׀ (in the heavens) מִמַּ֔֡עַל (above), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר֩ (or that is) בָּאָ֖֨רֶץ (in the earth) מִתָּ֑֜חַת (beneath), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (or that is) בַּמַּ֖֣יִם׀ (in the water) מִתַּ֥֣חַת (beneath) לָאָֽ֗רֶץ׃ (the earth). 9  לֹא־ (Not) תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥֣ה (you shall bow down) לָהֶ֖ם֮ (to them) וְלֹ֣א (and not) תָעָבְדֵ֑ם֒ (you shall serve them), כִּ֣י (for) אָנֹכִ֞י (I) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) אֵ֣ל (am a God) קַנָּ֔א (jealous), פֹּ֠קֵד (visiting) עֲוֺ֨ן (the iniquity) אָב֧וֹת (of the fathers) עַל־ (upon) בָּנִ֛ים (the sons) וְעַל־ (and on) שִׁלֵּשִׁ֥ים (the third) וְעַל־ (and) רִבֵּעִ֖ים (fourth) לְשֹׂנְאָֽ֑י׃ (of those hating Me), 10  וְעֹ֤֥שֶׂה (and showing) חֶ֖֙סֶד֙ (loving devotion) לַֽאֲלָפִ֑֔ים (to thousands) לְאֹהֲבַ֖י (to those loving Me) וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י (and keeping) מִצְוֹתוֹ׃ס (My commandments).

11  לֹ֥א (Not) תִשָּׂ֛א (you lift up) אֶת־ (-) שֵֽׁם־ (the name) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) לַשָּׁ֑וְא (in vain), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֤א (not) יְנַקֶּה֙ (will hold guiltless) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֵ֛ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (him who) יִשָּׂ֥א (lifts up) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (His name) לַשָּֽׁוְא׃ס (in vain).

12  שָׁמ֣֛וֹר (Observe) אֶת־ (-) י֥וֹם֩ (the day) הַשַּׁבָּ֖֨ת (of the Sabbath) לְקַדְּשׁ֑֜וֹ (to keep it holy), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוְּךָ֖֣׀ (has commanded you) יְהוָ֥֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽ֗יךָ׃ (your God). 13  שֵׁ֤֣שֶׁת (Six) יָמִ֣ים֙ (days) תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד֮ (you shall labor) וְעָשִׂ֖֣יתָ (and do) כָּֿל־ (all) מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ֒׃ (your work), 14  וְי֙וֹם֙ (and day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֜֔י (the seventh) שַׁבָּ֖֣ת׀ (is the Sabbath) לַיהוָ֣֥ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑֗יךָ (your God); לֹ֣א (not) תַעֲשֶׂ֣ה (you shall not do) כָל־ (any) מְלָאכָ֡ה (work)— אַתָּ֣ה (you), וּבִנְךָֽ־ (and your son), וּבִתֶּ֣ךָ (and your daughter), וְעַבְדְּךָֽ־ (and your manservant), וַ֠אֲמָתֶךָ (and your maidservant), וְשׁוֹרְךָ֨ (and your ox), וַחֲמֹֽרְךָ֜ (and your donkey), וְכָל־ (and any) בְּהֶמְתֶּ֗ךָ (of your cattle), וְגֵֽרְךָ֙ (and your sojourner) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who is) בִּשְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ (within your gates)— לְמַ֗עַן (that) יָנ֛וּחַ (may rest) עַבְדְּךָ֥ (your manservant) וַאֲמָתְךָ֖ (and your maidservant) כָּמֽ֑וֹךָ׃ (like you). 15  וְזָכַרְתָּ֞֗ (And remember) כִּ֣י־ (that) עֶ֤֥בֶד (a slave) הָיִ֣֙יתָ֙׀ (you were) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔֗יִם (of Egypt), וַיֹּצִ֨אֲךָ֜֩ (and brought you out) יְהוָ֤֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֤֙יךָ֙ (your God) מִשָּׁ֔ם֙ (from there) בְּיָ֤֥ד (by a hand) חֲזָקָ֖ה֙ (mighty) וּבִזְרֹ֣עַ (and by an arm) נְטוּיָ֑֔ה (outstretched). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus) צִוְּךָ֙ (commanded you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת (to keep) אֶת־ (-) י֥וֹם (day) הַשַׁבָּֽת׃ס (the Sabbath).

16  כַּבֵּ֤ד (Honor) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֙יךָ֙ (your father) וְאֶת־ (and) אִמֶּ֔ךָ (your mother), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוְּךָ֖ (has commanded you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God), לְמַ֣עַן׀ (that) יַאֲרִיכֻ֣ן (may be long) יָמֶ֗יךָ (your days), וּלְמַ֙עַן֙ (that) יִ֣יטַב (it may be well) לָ֔ךְ (with you) עַ֚ל (in) הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָֽךְ׃ס (to you).

17  לֹ֥֖א (Not) תִּֿרְצָֽח׃ס (you shall murder).

18  וְלֹ֖֣א (And not) תִּֿנְאָֽ֑ף׃ס (you shall commit adultery).

19  וְלֹ֖֣א (And not) תִּֿגְנֹֽ֔ב׃ס (you shall steal).

20  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) תַעֲנֶ֥ה (you shall bear) בְרֵֽעֲךָ֖ (against your neighbor) עֵ֥ד (witness) שָֽׁוְא׃ס (false).

21  וְלֹ֥א (And not) תַחְמֹ֖ד (you shall covet) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) רֵעֶ֑ךָס (of your neighbor), וְלֹ֨א (and not) תִתְאַוֶּ֜ה (you shall covet) בֵּ֣ית (the house) רֵעֶ֗ךָ (of your neighbor), שָׂדֵ֜הוּ (his field), וְעַבְדּ֤וֹ (and his manservant), וַאֲמָתוֹ֙ (and his maidservant), שׁוֹר֣וֹ (his ox), וַחֲמֹר֔וֹ (and his donkey), וְכֹ֖ל (and anything) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that is) לְרֵעֶֽךָ׃ס (unto your neighbor).

Moses Intercedes for the People

22  אֶֽת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֡לֶּה (these) דִּבֶּר֩ (spoke) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) קְהַלְכֶ֜ם (your⁺ assembly) בָּהָ֗ר (in the mountain) מִתּ֤וֹךְ (out of the midst) הָאֵשׁ֙ (of the fire), הֶֽעָנָ֣ן (the cloud), וְהָֽעֲרָפֶ֔ל (and the thick darkness), ק֥וֹל (with a voice) גָּד֖וֹל (loud). וְלֹ֣א (And not) יָסָ֑ף (He added more). וַֽיִּכְתְּבֵ֗ם (And He wrote them) עַל־ (on) שְׁנֵי֙ (two) לֻחֹ֣ת (tablets) אֲבָנִ֔ים (of stone) וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖ם (and gave them) אֵלָֽי׃ (to me).

23  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) כְּשָׁמְעֲכֶ֤ם (when you⁺ heard) אֶת־ (-) הַקּוֹל֙ (the voice) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (out of the midst) הַחֹ֔שֶׁךְ (of the darkness), וְהָהָ֖ר (and while the mountain) בֹּעֵ֣ר (was burning) בָּאֵ֑שׁ (with the fire), וַתִּקְרְב֣וּן (that you⁺ came near) אֵלַ֔י (to me)— כָּל־ (all) רָאשֵׁ֥י (the heads) שִׁבְטֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ tribes) וְזִקְנֵיכֶֽם׃ (and your⁺ elders), 24  וַתֹּאמְר֗וּ (and you⁺ said), הֵ֣ן (Surely) הֶרְאָ֜נוּ (has shown us) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ (our God) אֶת־ (-) כְּבֹד֣וֹ (His glory) וְאֶת־ (and) גָּדְל֔וֹ (His greatness), וְאֶת־ (and) קֹל֥וֹ (His voice) שָׁמַ֖עְנוּ (we have heard) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (out of the midst) הָאֵ֑שׁ (of the fire). הַיּ֤וֹם (The day) הַזֶּה֙ (this) רָאִ֔ינוּ (we have seen) כִּֽי־ (that) יְדַבֵּ֧ר (speaks) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) אֶת־ (with) הָֽאָדָ֖ם (the man), וָחָֽי׃ (and he has lived). 25  וְעַתָּה֙ (And now) לָ֣מָּה (why) נָמ֔וּת (should we die)? כִּ֣י (For) תֹֽאכְלֵ֔נוּ (will consume us) הָאֵ֥שׁ (the fire) הַגְּדֹלָ֖ה (great) הַזֹּ֑את (this) אִם־ (if) יֹסְפִ֣ים׀ (add) אֲנַ֗חְנוּ (we) לִ֠שְׁמֹעַ (to hear) אֶת־ (-) ק֨וֹל (the voice) יְהוָ֧ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ (our God) ע֖וֹד (anymore), וָמָֽתְנוּ׃ (and we shall die). 26  כִּ֣י (For) מִ֣י (who) כָל־ (of all) בָּשָׂ֡ר (flesh) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (is he who) שָׁמַ֣ע (has heard) קוֹל֩ (the voice) אֱלֹהִ֨ים (of the God) חַיִּ֜ים (living) מְדַבֵּ֧ר (speaking) מִתּוֹךְ־ (out of the midst) הָאֵ֛שׁ (of the fire) כָּמֹ֖נוּ (as we), וַיֶּֽחִי׃ (and lived)? 27  קְרַ֤ב (Draw near) אַתָּה֙ (you) וּֽשֲׁמָ֔ע (and hear) אֵ֛ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יֹאמַ֖ר (may say) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (our God). וְאַ֣תְּ׀ (And you) תְּדַבֵּ֣ר (tell) אֵלֵ֗ינוּ (to us) אֵת֩ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יְדַבֵּ֜ר (says) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ (our God) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you), וְשָׁמַ֥עְנוּ (and we will listen) וְעָשִֽׂינוּ׃ (and do it).

28  וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (And heard) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) ק֣וֹל (the voice) דִּבְרֵיכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ words) בְּדַבֶּרְכֶ֖ם (when you⁺ spoke) אֵלָ֑י (to me), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me), שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי (I have heard) אֶת־ (-) ק֨וֹל (the voice) דִּבְרֵ֜י (of the words) הָעָ֤ם (of the people) הַזֶּה֙ (this) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבְּר֣וּ (they have spoken) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you). הֵיטִ֖יבוּ (They are right) כָּל־ (in all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבֵּֽרוּ׃ (they have spoken). 29  מִֽי־ (O that) יִתֵּ֡ן (and given) וְהָיָה֩ (had been) לְבָבָ֨ם (their heart) זֶ֜ה (thus) לָהֶ֗ם (-) לְיִרְאָ֥ה (to fear) אֹתִ֛י (Me) וְלִשְׁמֹ֥ר (and to keep) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) מִצְוֺתַ֖י (My commandments) כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִ֑ים (the days), לְמַ֨עַן (so that) יִיטַ֥ב (it may be well) לָהֶ֛ם (with them) וְלִבְנֵיהֶ֖ם (and with their sons) לְעֹלָֽם׃ (forever)! 30  לֵ֖ךְ (Go) אֱמֹ֣ר (and say) לָהֶ֑ם (to them), שׁ֥וּבוּ (Return) לָכֶ֖ם (to your⁺) לְאָהֳלֵיכֶֽם׃ (tents). 31  וְאַתָּ֗ה (And you), פֹּה֮ (here) עֲמֹ֣ד (stand) עִמָּדִי֒ (by Me) וַאֲדַבְּרָ֣ה (and I will speak) אֵלֶ֗יךָ (to you) אֵ֧ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַמִּצְוָ֛ה (the commandments), וְהַחֻקִּ֥ים (and the statutes), וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֖ים (and the ordinances) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) תְּלַמְּדֵ֑ם (you shall teach them), וְעָשׂ֣וּ (and they will do them) בָאָ֔רֶץ (in the land) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) נֹתֵ֥ן (am giving) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ (to possess).

32  וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֣ם (And you⁺ shall take heed) לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת (to do) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוָּ֛ה (has commanded) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ God) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺); לֹ֥א (not) תָסֻ֖רוּ (you⁺ shall turn aside) יָמִ֥ין (to the right) וּשְׂמֹֽאל׃ (or to the left). 33  בְּכָל־ (In all) הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ (the ways) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) צִוָּ֜ה (has commanded) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֛ם (your⁺ God) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺), תֵּלֵ֑כוּ (you⁺ shall walk), לְמַ֤עַן (so that) תִּֽחְיוּן֙ (you⁺ may live) וְט֣וֹב (and that it may be well) לָכֶ֔ם (with you⁺) וְהַאֲרַכְתֶּ֣ם (and that you⁺ may prolong) יָמִ֔ים (your days) בָּאָ֖רֶץ (in the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּֽירָשֽׁוּן׃ (you⁺ shall possess).
