Israel at Mount Sinai

1  בַּחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ (In the month) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י (third) לְצֵ֥את (of the going out) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt)— בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַזֶּ֔ה (that) בָּ֖אוּ (they entered) מִדְבַּ֥ר (the Wilderness) סִינָֽי׃ (of Sinai). 2  וַיִּסְע֣וּ (And they journeyed) מֵרְפִידִ֗ים (from Rephidim) וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (and entered) מִדְבַּ֣ר (the Wilderness) סִינַ֔י (of Sinai) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and camped) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness). וַיִּֽחַן־ (And camped) שָׁ֥ם (there) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) נֶ֥גֶד (before) הָהָֽר׃ (the mountain).

3  וּמֹשֶׁ֥ה (And Moses) עָלָ֖ה (went up) אֶל־ (to) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God), וַיִּקְרָ֨א (and called) אֵלָ֤יו (to him) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מִן־ (from) הָהָ֣ר (the mountain), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), כֹּ֤ה (Thus) תֹאמַר֙ (you shall say) לְבֵ֣ית (to the house) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob) וְתַגֵּ֖יד (and you shall tell) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel): 4  אַתֶּ֣ם (You⁺) רְאִיתֶ֔ם (yourselves have seen) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (what) עָשִׂ֖יתִי (I did) לְמִצְרָ֑יִם (to Egypt). וָאֶשָּׂ֤א (And I bore up) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) עַל־ (on) כַּנְפֵ֣י (wings) נְשָׁרִ֔ים (of eagles) וָאָבִ֥א (and I brought) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) אֵלָֽי׃ (to Myself). 5  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) אִם־ (if) שָׁמ֤וֹעַ (listening) תִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ (you⁺ will listen) בְּקֹלִ֔י (to My voice) וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם (and keep) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֑י (My covenant), וִהְיִ֨יתֶם (and you⁺ shall be) לִ֤י (to Me) סְגֻלָּה֙ (a treasured possession) מִכָּל־ (from among all) הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים (the peoples)— כִּי־ (for) לִ֖י (belongs to Me) כָּל־ (all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth). 6  וְאַתֶּ֧ם (And you⁺) תִּהְיוּ־ (you⁺ shall be) לִ֛י (to Me) מַמְלֶ֥כֶת (a kingdom) כֹּהֲנִ֖ים (of priests), וְג֣וֹי (and a nation) קָד֑וֹשׁ (holy). אֵ֚לֶּה (These are) הַדְּבָרִ֔ים (the words) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תְּדַבֵּ֖ר (you shall speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

7  וַיָּבֹ֣א (And came) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) וַיִּקְרָ֖א (and called) לְזִקְנֵ֣י (for the elders) הָעָ֑ם (of the people), וַיָּ֣שֶׂם (and he set) לִפְנֵיהֶ֗ם (before their faces) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) צִוָּ֖הוּ (commanded him) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 8  וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ (And answered) כָל־ (all) הָעָ֤ם (the people) יַחְדָּו֙ (together) וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and said), כֹּ֛ל (All) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) דִּבֶּ֥ר (has spoken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), נַעֲשֶׂ֑ה (we will do).

וַיָּ֧שֶׁב (And brought back) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) הָעָ֖ם (of the people) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

9  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), אָנֹכִ֜י (I) בָּ֣א (am coming) אֵלֶיךָ֮ (to you) בְּעַ֣ב (in thick) הֶֽעָנָן֒ (the cloud), בַּעֲב֞וּר (so that) יִשְׁמַ֤ע (may hear) הָעָם֙ (the people) בְּדַבְּרִ֣י (in My speaking) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you) וְגַם־ (and also) בְּךָ֖ (in you) יַאֲמִ֣ינוּ (put their trust) לְעוֹלָ֑ם (forever).

וַיַּגֵּ֥ד (And told) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) הָעָ֖ם (of the people) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

10  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses), לֵ֣ךְ (Go) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֔ם (the people), וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ם (and sanctify them) הַיּ֖וֹם (today) וּמָחָ֑ר (and tomorrow), וְכִבְּס֖וּ (and they shall wash) שִׂמְלֹתָֽם׃ (their clothes), 11  וְהָי֥וּ (and let them be) נְכֹנִ֖ים (ready) לַיּ֣וֹם (for the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י (third), כִּ֣י׀ (for) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י (third) יֵרֵ֧ד (will come down) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לְעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) כָל־ (of all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) עַל־ (upon) הַ֥ר (Mount) סִינָֽי׃ (Sinai).

12  וְהִגְבַּלְתָּ֤ (And you shall set bounds) אֶת־ (-) הָעָם֙ (for the people) סָבִ֣יב (all around), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הִשָּׁמְר֥וּ (Guard) לָכֶ֛ם (yourselves) עֲל֥וֹת (from going up) בָּהָ֖ר (on the mountain) וּנְגֹ֣עַ (and touching) בְּקָצֵ֑הוּ (on its base). כָּל־ (Everyone) הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ (who touches) בָּהָ֖ר (on the mountain) מ֥וֹת (dying) יוּמָֽת׃ (must be put to death). 13  לֹא־ (Not) תִגַּ֨ע (shall touch) בּ֜וֹ (him) יָ֗ד (a hand), כִּֽי־ (but) סָק֤וֹל (being stoned) יִסָּקֵל֙ (he shall be stoned) אוֹ־ (or) יָרֹ֣ה (being shot) יִיָּרֶ֔ה (he shall be shot)— אִם־ (whether) בְּהֵמָ֥ה (beast) אִם־ (or) אִ֖ישׁ (man), לֹ֣א (not) יִחְיֶ֑ה (he shall live).

בִּמְשֹׁךְ֙ (At the drawing out) הַיֹּבֵ֔ל (of the horn), הֵ֖מָּה (they) יַעֲל֥וּ (shall go up) בָהָֽר׃ (on the mountain).

14  וַיֵּ֧רֶד (And went down) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) מִן־ (from) הָהָ֖ר (the mountain) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֑ם (the people), וַיְקַדֵּשׁ֙ (and he sanctified) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֔ם (the people), וַֽיְכַבְּס֖וּ (and they washed) שִׂמְלֹתָֽם׃ (their clothes). 15  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֔ם (the people), הֱי֥וּ (Be) נְכֹנִ֖ים (ready) לִשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (for the third) יָמִ֑ים (day). אַֽל־ (Not) תִּגְּשׁ֖וּ (do draw near) אֶל־ (to) אִשָּֽׁה׃ (a woman).

Yahweh Visits Sinai

16  וַיְהִי֩ (And it came to pass) בַיּ֨וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י (third) בִּֽהְיֹ֣ת (when it was) הַבֹּ֗קֶר (the morning) וַיְהִי֩ (that there were) קֹלֹ֨ת (voices) וּבְרָקִ֜ים (and lightnings), וְעָנָ֤ן (and a cloud) כָּבֵד֙ (heavy) עַל־ (on) הָהָ֔ר (the mountain), וְקֹ֥ל (and the voice) שֹׁפָ֖ר (of the shofar) חָזָ֣ק (mighty) מְאֹ֑ד (was very). וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד (And trembled) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who were) בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ (in the camp). 17  וַיּוֹצֵ֨א (And brought out) מֹשֶׁ֧ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֛ם (the people) לִקְרַ֥את (to meet) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) מִן־ (from) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה (the camp), וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֖וּ (and they stood) בְּתַחְתִּ֥ית (at the bottom) הָהָֽר׃ (of the mountain).

18  וְהַ֤ר (And Mount) סִינַי֙ (Sinai) עָשַׁ֣ן (smoked) כֻּלּ֔וֹ (all of it) מִ֠פְּנֵי (-), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (because) יָרַ֥ד (descended) עָלָ֛יו (on it) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בָּאֵ֑שׁ (in the fire). וַיַּ֤עַל (And ascended) עֲשָׁנוֹ֙ (its smoke) כְּעֶ֣שֶׁן (like the smoke) הַכִּבְשָׁ֔ן (of a furnace), וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד (and trembled) כָּל־ (all) הָהָ֖ר (the mountain) מְאֹֽד׃ (greatly). 19  וַיְהִי֙ (And was) ק֣וֹל (the voice) הַשּׁוֹפָ֔ר (of the shofar) הוֹלֵ֖ךְ (going on), וְחָזֵ֣ק (and was strong) מְאֹ֑ד (very). מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) יְדַבֵּ֔ר (spoke), וְהָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (and God) יַעֲנֶ֥נּוּ (answered him) בְקֽוֹל׃ (with a voice).

20  וַיֵּ֧רֶד (And descended) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) עַל־ (upon) הַ֥ר (Mount) סִינַ֖י (Sinai), אֶל־ (on) רֹ֣אשׁ (the top) הָהָ֑ר (of the mountain). וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) לְמֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) רֹ֥אשׁ (the top) הָהָ֖ר (of the mountain), וַיַּ֥עַל (and ascended) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (Moses). 21  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), רֵ֖ד (Go down) הָעֵ֣ד (warn) בָּעָ֑ם (the people), פֶּן־ (lest) יֶהֶרְס֤וּ (they break through) אֶל־ (at) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לִרְא֔וֹת (to see), וְנָפַ֥ל (and fall) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (from them) רָֽב׃ (many). 22  וְגַ֧ם (And also) הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים (the priests) הַנִּגָּשִׁ֥ים (who draw near) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) יִתְקַדָּ֑שׁוּ (shall sanctify themselves), פֶּן־ (lest) יִפְרֹ֥ץ (break out) בָּהֶ֖ם (against them) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

23  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), לֹא־ (Not) יוּכַ֣ל (are able) הָעָ֔ם (the people) לַעֲלֹ֖ת (to come up) אֶל־ (to) הַ֣ר (Mount) סִינָ֑י (Sinai), כִּֽי־ (for) אַתָּ֞ה (You) הַעֵדֹ֤תָה (yourself warned) בָּ֙נוּ֙ (us), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הַגְבֵּ֥ל (Set bounds around) אֶת־ (-) הָהָ֖ר (the mountain) וְקִדַּשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ (and sanctify it).

24  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלָ֤יו (to him) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לֶךְ־ (Go), רֵ֔ד (descend), וְעָלִ֥יתָ (and you shall come up), אַתָּ֖ה (you) וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן (and Aaron) עִמָּ֑ךְ (with you). וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים (And the priests) וְהָעָ֗ם (and the people) אַל־ (not) יֶֽהֶרְס֛וּ (do let them break through) לַעֲלֹ֥ת (to come up) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), פֶּן־ (lest) יִפְרָץ־ (He break out) בָּֽם׃ (against them).

25  וַיֵּ֥רֶד (And went down) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֑ם (the people), וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and spoke) אֲלֵהֶֽם׃ס (to them).
