The Doomed Flock

1  פְּתַ֥ח (Open) לְבָנ֖וֹן (O Lebanon), דְּלָתֶ֑יךָ (your doors),

וְתֹאכַ֥ל (that may devour) אֵ֖שׁ (fire) בַּאֲרָזֶֽיךָ׃ (your cedars).

2  הֵילֵ֤ל (Wail), בְּרוֹשׁ֙ (O cypress); כִּֽי־ (for) נָ֣פַל (has fallen); אֶ֔רֶז (the cedar)

אֲשֶׁ֥ר (for) אַדִּרִ֖ים (the mighty ones) שֻׁדָּ֑דוּ (are ruined);

הֵילִ֙ילוּ֙ (wail), אַלּוֹנֵ֣י (O oaks) בָשָׁ֔ן (of Bashan);

כִּ֥י (for) יָרַ֖ד (has gone down). יַ֥עַר (Forest) הַבָּצוּר׃ (the dense).

3  ק֚וֹל (A voice) יִֽלְלַ֣ת (of wailing is) הָרֹעִ֔ים (among the shepherds);

כִּ֥י (for) שֻׁדְּדָ֖ה (is in ruins); אַדַּרְתָּ֑ם (their glory)

ק֚וֹל (a voice) שַׁאֲגַ֣ת (of the roaring) כְּפִירִ֔ים (of lions);

כִּ֥י (for) שֻׁדַּ֖ד (has been devastated). גְּא֥וֹן (The height) הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ס (of the Jordan).

4  כֹּ֥ה (Thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֑י (my God); רְעֵ֖ה (Shepherd) אֶת־ (-) צֹ֥אן (the flock) הַהֲרֵגָֽה׃ (of the slaughter); 5  אֲשֶׁ֨ר (those who) קֹנֵיהֶ֤ן (are buying them) יַֽהֲרְגֻן֙ (will slaughter them) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יֶאְשָׁ֔מוּ (will they be held guilty); וּמֹכְרֵיהֶ֣ן (and those selling them) יֹאמַ֔ר (will say), בָּר֥וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH); וַאעְשִׁ֑ר (and for I have become rich); וְרֹ֣עֵיהֶ֔ם (and their own shepherds) לֹ֥א (not) יַחְמ֖וֹל (have compassion) עֲלֵיהֶֽן׃ (over them).

6  כִּ֠י (So) לֹ֣א (not) אֶחְמ֥וֹל (will I have compassion) ע֛וֹד (any longer) עַל־ (over) יֹשְׁבֵ֥י (the dwellers) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the land), נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH); וְהִנֵּ֨ה (and behold), אָנֹכִ֜י (I) מַמְצִ֣יא (am causing to come forth) אֶת־ (-) הָאָדָ֗ם (mankind) אִ֤ישׁ (each man) בְּיַד־ (into the hand), רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ (of his neighbor) וּבְיַ֣ד (and into the hand) מַלְכּ֔וֹ (of his king); וְכִתְּתוּ֙ (and they will crush) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land), וְלֹ֥א (and not) אַצִּ֖יל (I will deliver) מִיָּדָֽם׃ (from their hand).

7  וָֽאֶרְעֶה֙ (And I pastured) אֶת־ (-) צֹ֣אן (the flock) הַֽהֲרֵגָ֔ה (of slaughter), לָכֵ֖ן (-) עֲנִיֵּ֣י (the afflicted) הַצֹּ֑אן (of the flock). וָאֶקַּֽח־ (And I took) לִ֞י (for myself) שְׁנֵ֣י (two) מַקְל֗וֹת (staffs); לְאַחַ֞ד (to one) קָרָ֤אתִי (I called the name) נֹ֙עַם֙ (Favor), וּלְאַחַד֙ (and to one) קָרָ֣אתִי (I called the name) חֹֽבְלִ֔ים (Union); וָאֶרְעֶ֖ה (and I pastured) אֶת־ (-) הַצֹּֽאן׃ (the flock). 8  וָאַכְחִ֛ד (And I cut off) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (three) הָרֹעִ֖ים (the shepherds) בְּיֶ֣רַח (in a month); אֶחָ֑ד (single)

וַתִּקְצַ֤ר (and became short) נַפְשִׁי֙ (My soul) בָּהֶ֔ם (with them) וְגַם־ (and also) נַפְשָׁ֖ם (their soul) בָּחֲלָ֥ה (felt loathing) בִֽי׃ (for me). 9  וָאֹמַ֕ר (And I said) לֹ֥א (Not) אֶרְעֶ֖ה (will I shepherd) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺) הַמֵּתָ֣ה (the one dying), תָמ֗וּת (let die); וְהַנִּכְחֶ֙דֶת֙ (and the one cut off), תִּכָּחֵ֔ד (let it be cut off); וְהַ֨נִּשְׁאָר֔וֹת (and those remaining) תֹּאכַ֕לְנָה (let eat) אִשָּׁ֖ה (each one) אֶת־ (-) בְּשַׂ֥ר (the flesh) רְעוּתָֽהּ׃ (of its neighbor).

(Matthew 27:3–10)

10  וָאֶקַּ֤ח (And I took) אֶת־ (-) מַקְלִי֙ (my staff called), אֶת־ (-) נֹ֔עַם (Pleasantness), וָאֶגְדַּ֖ע (and cut in two) אֹת֑וֹ (it) לְהָפֵיר֙ (to break apart) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֔י (the covenant) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) כָּרַ֖תִּי (I had made) אֶת־ (with) כָּל־ (all) הָעַמִּֽים׃ (the peoples). 11  וַתֻּפַ֖ר (And it was broken) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day), הַה֑וּא (that) וַיֵּדְע֨וּ (and knew) כֵ֜ן (so) עֲנִיֵּ֤י (the afflicted) הַצֹּאן֙ (of the flock) הַשֹּׁמְרִ֣ים (who were watching) אֹתִ֔י (me) כִּ֥י (that) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) הֽוּא׃ (it was).

12  וָאֹמַ֣ר (And I said) אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (to them) אִם־ (If) ט֧וֹב (it is good) בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֛ם (to you⁺), הָב֥וּ (give me) שְׂכָרִ֖י (my wage); וְאִם־ (and if) לֹ֣א׀ (not), חֲדָ֑לוּ (forgo it). וַיִּשְׁקְל֥וּ (And they weighed out) אֶת־ (-) שְׂכָרִ֖י (my wage) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (thirty) כָּֽסֶף׃ (of silver).

13  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֗י (to me) הַשְׁלִיכֵ֙הוּ֙ (Throw it) אֶל־ (to) הַיּוֹצֵ֔ר (the potter), אֶ֣דֶר (the magnificent) הַיְקָ֔ר (price) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (at which) יָקַ֖רְתִּי (I was valued) מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (by them) וָֽאֶקְחָה֙ (and I took) שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים (the thirty) הַכֶּ֔סֶף (of silver), וָאַשְׁלִ֥יךְ (and I threw) אֹת֛וֹ (it) בֵּ֥ית (into the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) הַיּוֹצֵֽר׃ (the potter).

14  וָֽאֶגְדַּע֙ (And I cut in two) אֶת־ (-) מַקְלִ֣י (my staff), הַשֵּׁנִ֔י (second called) אֵ֖ת (-) הַחֹֽבְלִ֑ים (Union), לְהָפֵר֙ (to break) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאַחֲוָ֔ה (the brotherhood) בֵּ֥ין (between) יְהוּדָ֖ה (Judah) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (Israel).

15  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֵלָ֑י (to me) ע֣וֹד (Again) קַח־ (take) לְךָ֔ (for yourself) כְּלִ֖י (the implement) רֹעֶ֥ה (of a shepherd) אֱוִלִֽי׃ (foolish). 16  כִּ֣י (For), הִנֵּֽה־ (behold), אָנֹכִי֩ (I) מֵקִ֨ים (am raising up) רֹעֶ֜ה (a shepherd) בָּאָ֗רֶץ (in the land), הַנִּכְחָד֤וֹת (those being cut off), לֹֽא־ (not) יִפְקֹד֙ (he will attend to) הַנַּ֣עַר (the young one) לֹֽא־ (not) יְבַקֵּ֔שׁ (will he seek) וְהַנִּשְׁבֶּ֖רֶת (and the one being broken), לֹ֣א (not) יְרַפֵּ֑א (will he heal) הַנִּצָּבָה֙ (the one standing still), לֹ֣א (not) יְכַלְכֵּ֔ל (will he sustain) וּבְשַׂ֤ר (and the flesh) הַבְּרִיאָה֙ (of the fat one), יֹאכַ֔ל (he will devour) וּפַרְסֵיהֶ֖ן (and their hooves) יְפָרֵֽק׃ס (he will tear off).

17  ה֣וֹי (Woe to) רֹעִ֤י (to the shepherd) הָֽאֱלִיל֙ (worthless)

עֹזְבִ֣י (leaving behind) הַצֹּ֔אן (the flock)!

חֶ֥רֶב (May a sword be) עַל־ (against) זְרוֹע֖וֹ (his arm),

וְעַל־ (and against) עֵ֣ין (eye)! יְמִינ֑וֹ (His right)

זְרֹעוֹ֙ (His arm) יָב֣וֹשׁ (withering) תִּיבָ֔שׁ (it will wither),

וְעֵ֥ין (and the eye) יְמִינ֖וֹ (his right) כָּהֹ֥ה (being dim) תִכְהֶֽה׃ס (let it grow dim).
