Twelve Captains for Twelve Months

1And these are the sons of Israel according to their number of the heads of the fathers and the captains of the thousands and of the hundreds, and their officers who served the king in every matter of the divisions who came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year—one division being twenty-four thousand.

2Over the first division for the first month was Jashobeam son of Zabdiel—and in his division twenty-four thousand— 3of the sons of Perez, the chief of all the captains of the army for the first month.

4And over the division of the second month was Dodai the Ahohite, and his division, and Mikloth was the leader, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

5The captain of the third army for the third month was Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the chief priest, and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 6This Benaiah was mighty among the Thirty, and over the thirty, and over his division was Ammizabad his son.

7The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

8The fifth, for the fifth month, was the captain Shamhuth the Izrahite, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

9The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

10The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite, of the sons of Ephraim, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

11The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbechai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

12The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer the Anathothite, of the Benjamite, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

13The tenth, for the tenth month, was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zerahite, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

14The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the sons of Ephraim, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

15The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel, and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

The Leaders of the Twelve Tribes

16And over the tribes of Israel:

Over the Reubenite, the officer was Eliezer son of Zichri;

over the Simeonite, Shephatiah son of Maacah;

17over Levi was Hashabiah son of Kemuel;

over Aaron, Zadok;

18over Judah was Elihu of the brothers of David;

over Issachar, Omri son of Michael;

19over Zebulun was Ishmaiah son of Obadiah;

over Naphtali, Jerimoth son of Azriel;

20over the sons of Ephraim was Hoshea son of Azaziah;

over the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah;

21over the half of Manasseh in Gilead was Iddo son of Zechariah;

over Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner;

22over Dan was Azarel son of Jeroham.

These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.

23David did not take their number from a son of twenty years and under, because YHWH had said He would multiply Israel like the stars of the heavens. 24Joab son of Zeruiah began to number, and he did not finish, and there was wrath for this upon Israel. The count did not go up into the number of the Words of the Days of King David.

David’s Various Overseers

25And over the treasuries of the king was Azmaveth son of Adiel;

and over the storehouses in the field, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the towers, Jonathan son of Uzziah;

26and over those who did the work of the field for the service of the ground was Ezri son of Chelub;

27and over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite;

and over the vineyards for the treasuries of wine was Zabdi the Shiphmite;

28and over the olive trees and the sycamore trees that are in the Shephelah was Baal-hanan the Gederite;

and over the store of the oil was Joash;

29and over the herd that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite;

and over the herd in the valleys was Shaphat son of Adlai;

30and over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite;

and over the donkeys was Jehdeiah the Meronothite;

31and over the flock was Jaziz the Hagrite.

All these were heads of the property that was unto King David.

The Counselors

32And Jonathan uncle of David—was a counselor, a wise man, and he was a scribe;

and Jehiel son of Hachmoni was with the sons of the king;

33and Ahithophel was counselor of the king;

and Hushai the Archite was companion of the king.

34And after Ahithophel was Jehoiada son of Benaiah, and Abiathar;

and the head of the host of the king was Joab.
