(b) In true repentance there is no hypocrisy. (f) If we will have God work in us with his Holy Spirit, we must turn again to him by repentance. (g) He does not mean that God is subject to these passions, to rejoice, or to be sad: but he uses this manner of speech to declare the love that he has for us. If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. (h) The law is so evident that no one can pretend ignorance. It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Neither is it beyond the {i} sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
(i) By heaven and the sea he means places most far distant. But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. But the {k} word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest {l} do it.
(k) Even the law and the gospel. (l) By faith in Christ. See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. (m) So that to love and obey God, is only life and happiness. (n) He adds these promises to signify that it is for our profit that we love him, and not for his.
