This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.”2As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, "Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way,
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’ ”3the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.'"
John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4In the wilderness John the baptizer began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People went out to him from all of Jerusalem and the countryside of Judea. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.5People from the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem were going out to him, and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.
John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.6John wore a garment made of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
And he began to proclaim: “After me will come One more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.7He proclaimed, "One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.
I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.9Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.
As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.10And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”11And a voice came from heaven: "You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight."
At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness,12The Spirit immediately drove him into the wilderness.
and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.13He was in the wilderness forty days, enduring temptations from Satan. He was with wild animals, and angels were ministering to his needs.
After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God.14Now after John was imprisoned, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God.
“The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”15He said, "The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel!"
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.16As he went along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon's brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishermen).
“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”17Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will turn you into fishers of people."
And at once they left their nets and followed Him.18They left their nets immediately and followed him.
Going on a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat, mending their nets.19Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother in their boat mending nets.
Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.20Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum, and right away Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.21Then they went to Capernaum. When the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
The people were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.22The people there were amazed by his teaching, because he taught them like one who had authority, not like the experts in the law.
Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue:23Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,
“What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”24"Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"
But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”25But Jesus rebuked him: "Silence! Come out of him!"
At this, the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and came out with a loud shriek.26After throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
All the people were amazed and began to ask one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him!”27They were all amazed so that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands the unclean spirits and they obey him."
And the news about Jesus spread quickly through the whole region of Galilee.28So the news about him spread quickly throughout all the region around Galilee.
As soon as Jesus and His companions had left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.29Now as soon as they left the synagogue, they entered Simon and Andrew's house, with James and John.
Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and they promptly told Jesus about her.30Simon's mother-in-law was lying down, sick with a fever, so they spoke to Jesus at once about her.
So He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them.31He came and raised her up by gently taking her hand. Then the fever left her and she began to serve them.
That evening, after sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick and demon-possessed,32When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and demon-possessed.
and the whole town gathered at the door.33The whole town gathered by the door.
And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.34So he healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. But he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray.35Then Jesus got up early in the morning when it was still very dark, departed, and went out to a deserted place, and there he spent time in prayer.
Simon and his companions went to look for Him,36Simon and his companions searched for him.
and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!”37When they found him, they said, "Everyone is looking for you."
But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.”38He replied, "Let us go elsewhere, into the surrounding villages, so that I can preach there too. For that is what I came out here to do."
So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.39So he went into all of Galilee preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.
Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”40Now a leper came to him and fell to his knees, asking for help. "If you are willing, you can make me clean," he said.
Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”41Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing. Be clean!"
And immediately the leprosy left him, and the man was cleansed.42The leprosy left him at once, and he was clean.
Jesus promptly sent him away with a stern warning:43Immediately Jesus sent the man away with a very strong warning.
“See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”44He told him, "See that you do not say anything to anyone, but go, show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."
But the man went out and openly began to proclaim and spread the news. Consequently, Jesus could no longer enter a town in plain view, but He stayed out in solitary places. Yet people came to Him from every quarter.45But as the man went out he began to announce it publicly and spread the story widely, so that Jesus was no longer able to enter any town openly but stayed outside in remote places. Still they kept coming to him from everywhere.
