Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,1Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,
where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry.2where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”3Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ ”4But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’ ”
Then the devil led Him up to a high place and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.5Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish.6“I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please.
So if You worship me, it will all be Yours.”7I will give it all to you if you will worship me.”
But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’ ”8Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’ ”
Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here.9Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off!
For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully;10For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you.
and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ”11And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ”
But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”12Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’ ”
When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.13When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came. Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region.14Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.
He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone.15He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read,16When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.
the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written:17The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”19 and that the time of the LORD ’s favor has come. ”
Then He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him,20He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.
and He began by saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”21Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”
All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked.22Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’ ”23Then he said, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’—meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’
Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.24 But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and great famine swept over all the land.25 “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.
Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon.26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”27 And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.”
On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue were enraged.28When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.
They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff.29Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff,
But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way.30but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way. Jesus Casts Out a Demon
Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach the people.31Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there in the synagogue every Sabbath day.
They were astonished at His teaching, because His message had authority.32There, too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice,33Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon—an evil spirit—cried out, shouting,
“Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”34“Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without harming him.35But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.
All the people were overcome with amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? With authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”36Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!”
And the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region.37The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region. Jesus Heals Many People
After Jesus had left the synagogue, He went to the home of Simon, whose mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they appealed to Jesus on her behalf,38After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged.
and He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and began to serve them.39Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them.
At sunset, all who were ill with various diseases were brought to Jesus, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them.40As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one.
Demons also came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He rebuked the demons and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ.41Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak. Jesus Continues to Preach
At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place, and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving.42Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them.
But Jesus told them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I was sent.”43But he replied, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.”
And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.44So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.
