“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,”

Satan offers Jesus the visible power, wealth, and influence of the world’s nations, inviting Him to gain dominion without following the Father’s appointed path of suffering and redemption. Earthly kingdoms possess real splendor, but their rule is temporary and cannot rival God’s eternal kingdom.

Mat 4:8 the devil took Him to a very high mountain…
Dan 7:14 And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship…
Psa 2:8 Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,…

he said.

Satan speaks as a personal adversary, seeking to draw Jesus away from complete obedience to the Father. His temptation presents power as an easier alternative to humble service and the cross.

Because of human sin, Satan exercises influence in a fallen world and over its corrupt systems. Yet he does not possess independent sovereignty; his activity remains under God’s ultimate authority.

Satan can promote rulers and exploit human ambition, but he cannot grant lasting authority apart from God’s will. His offer conceals its true cost: allegiance to him rather than worship of God.

Psa 75:6-7 For exaltation comes neither from east nor west,…

Teaching Points
Authority and Power
The devil claims, "I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory," highlighting the temporary and deceptive nature of worldly power. True authority belongs to God alone.

Worship and Allegiance
The devil's offer is contingent upon Jesus worshiping him. This underscores the importance of worship and allegiance to God alone, as worship is a matter of the heart and ultimate loyalty.

Scriptural Defense
Jesus' response to temptation is rooted in Scripture, demonstrating the power and necessity of knowing and applying God's Word in spiritual battles.

Temporary vs. Eternal
The devil's offer is temporary and fleeting, while Jesus' mission and kingdom are eternal. Believers are called to focus on eternal values rather than temporary gains.

(6) For that is delivered unto me.--Better, hath been delivered unto me. The specific assertion of the usurped dominion, though implied in St. Matthew, is in its form peculiar to St. Luke. (See Note on Matthew 4:9.) The notion that any such delegated sovereignty had been assigned to the Tempter, either before or after his fall from his first estate, has, it need hardly be said, no foundation in Scripture. It asserts that "the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof" (Psalm 24:1); and the claim of the Tempter was a lying boast, resting only on the permitted activity and temporary predominance of evil in the actual course of the world's history.

Luke 4:6 records a real but deceitful offer: Satan, wielding limited authority gained through human sin, tries to lure Jesus with immediate worldwide rule and glory—if only the Son will bypass the cross. Jesus’ refusal exposes the enemy’s counterfeit power and affirms that true, lasting authority comes only from the Father and is obtained through faithful obedience, not compromise.
