Psalm 79
BSB Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Berean Study BibleNew Living Translation
A Psalm of Asaph. The nations, O God, have invaded Your inheritance; they have defiled Your holy temple and reduced Jerusalem to rubble.1O God, pagan nations have conquered your land, your special possession. They have defiled your holy Temple and made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.
They have given the corpses of Your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.2They have left the bodies of your servants as food for the birds of heaven. The flesh of your godly ones has become food for the wild animals.
They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead.3Blood has flowed like water all around Jerusalem; no one is left to bury the dead.
We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those around us.4We are mocked by our neighbors, an object of scorn and derision to those around us.
How long, O LORD? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire?5O LORD, how long will you be angry with us? Forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You, on the kingdoms that refuse to call on Your name,6Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge you— on kingdoms that do not call upon your name.
for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland.7For they have devoured your people Israel, making the land a desolate wilderness.
Do not hold past sins against us; let Your compassion come quickly, for we are brought low.8Do not hold us guilty for the sins of our ancestors! Let your compassion quickly meet our needs, for we are on the brink of despair.
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; deliver us and atone for our sins, for the sake of Your name.9Help us, O God of our salvation! Help us for the glory of your name. Save us and forgive our sins for the honor of your name.
Why should the nations ask, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations Your vengeance for the bloodshed of Your servants.10Why should pagan nations be allowed to scoff, asking, “Where is their God?” Show us your vengeance against the nations, for they have spilled the blood of your servants.
May the groans of the captives reach You; by the strength of Your arm preserve those condemned to death.11Listen to the moaning of the prisoners. Demonstrate your great power by saving those condemned to die.
Pay back into the laps of our neighbors sevenfold the reproach they hurled at You, O Lord.12O Lord, pay back our neighbors seven times for the scorn they have hurled at you.
Then we Your people, the sheep of Your pasture, will thank You forever; from generation to generation we will declare Your praise.13Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will thank you forever and ever, praising your greatness from generation to generation.
