1The Levite family heads approached the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the family heads of the Israelite tribes.1Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel
2At Shiloh, in the land of Canaan, they told them, "The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities to live in, with their pasturelands for our livestock."2at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, "The LORD commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock."
3So the Israelites, by the LORD's command, gave the Levites these cities with their pasturelands from their inheritance.3So, as the LORD had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
4The lot came out for the Kohathite clans: The Levites who were the descendants of the priest Aaron received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.4The first lot came out for the Kohathites, according to their clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.
5The remaining descendants of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and half the tribe of Manasseh.5The rest of Kohath's descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh.
6Gershon's descendants received thirteen cities by lot from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and half the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.6The descendants of Gershon were allotted thirteen towns from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
7Merari's descendants received twelve cities for their clans from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.7The descendants of Merari, according to their clans, received twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.
8The Israelites gave these cities with their pasturelands around them to the Levites by lot, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.8So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these towns and their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
9The Israelites gave these cities by name from the tribes of the descendants of Judah and Simeon9From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they allotted the following towns by name
10to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because they received the first lot.10(these towns were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them):
11They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron; Arba was the father of Anak) with its surrounding pasturelands in the hill country of Judah.11They gave them Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pastureland, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)
12But they gave the fields and settlements of the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.12But the fields and villages around the city they had given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
13They gave to the descendants of the priest Aaron: Hebron, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands, Libnah with its pasturelands,13So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Libnah,
14Jattir with its pasturelands, Eshtemoa with its pasturelands,14Jattir, Eshtemoa,
15Holon with its pasturelands, Debir with its pasturelands,15Holon, Debir,
16Ain with its pasturelands, Juttah with its pasturelands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasturelands--nine cities from these two tribes.16Ain, Juttah and Beth Shemesh, together with their pasturelands--nine towns from these two tribes.
17From the tribe of Benjamin they gave: Gibeon with its pasturelands, Geba with its pasturelands,17And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba,
18Anathoth with its pasturelands, and Almon with its pasturelands--four cities.18Anathoth and Almon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
19All thirteen cities with their pasturelands were for the priests, the descendants of Aaron.19The total number of towns for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.
20The allotted cities to the remaining clans of Kohath's descendants, who were Levites, came from the tribe of Ephraim.20The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim:
21The Israelites gave them: Shechem, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands,21In the hill country of Ephraim they were given Shechem (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Gezer,
22Kibzaim with its pasturelands, and Beth-horon with its pasturelands--four cities.22Kibzaim and Beth Horon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
23From the tribe of Dan they gave: Elteke with its pasturelands, Gibbethon with its pasturelands,23Also from the tribe of Dan they received Eltekeh, Gibbethon,
24Aijalon with its pasturelands, and Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands--four cities.24Aijalon and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
25From half the tribe of Manasseh they gave: Taanach with its pasturelands and Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands--two cities.25From half the tribe of Manasseh they received Taanach and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasturelands--two towns.
26All ten cities with their pasturelands were for the clans of Kohath's other descendants.26All these ten towns and their pasturelands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
27From half the tribe of Manasseh, they gave to the descendants of Gershon, who were one of the Levite clans: Golan, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands in Bashan, and Beeshterah with its pasturelands--two cities.27The Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Be Eshterah, together with their pasturelands--two towns;
28From the tribe of Issachar they gave: Kishion with its pasturelands, Daberath with its pasturelands,28from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion, Daberath,
29Jarmuth with its pasturelands, and En-gannim with its pasturelands--four cities.29Jarmuth and En Gannim, together with their pasturelands--four towns;
30From the tribe of Asher they gave: Mishal with its pasturelands, Abdon with its pasturelands,30from the tribe of Asher, Mishal, Abdon,
31Helkath with its pasturelands, and Rehob with its pasturelands--four cities.31Helkath and Rehob, together with their pasturelands--four towns;
32From the tribe of Naphtali they gave: Kedesh in Galilee, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands, Hammoth-dor with its pasturelands, and Kartan with its pasturelands--three cities.32from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Hammoth Dor and Kartan, together with their pasturelands--three towns.
33All thirteen cities with their pasturelands were for the Gershonites by their clans.33The total number of towns of the Gershonite clans came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.
34From the tribe of Zebulun, they gave to the clans of the descendants of Merari, who were the remaining Levites: Jokneam with its pasturelands, Kartah with its pasturelands,34The Merarite clans (the rest of the Levites) were given: from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam, Kartah,
35Dimnah with its pasturelands, and Nahalal with its pasturelands--four cities.35Dimnah and Nahalal, together with their pasturelands--four towns;
36From the tribe of Reuben they gave: Bezer with its pasturelands, Jahzah with its pasturelands,36from the tribe of Reuben, Bezer, Jahaz,
37Kedemoth with its pasturelands, and Mephaath with its pasturelands--four cities.37Kedemoth and Mephaath, together with their pasturelands--four towns;
38From the tribe of Gad they gave: Ramoth in Gilead, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands, Mahanaim with its pasturelands,38from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Mahanaim,
39Heshbon with its pasturelands, and Jazer with its pasturelands--four cities in all.39Heshbon and Jazer, together with their pasturelands--four towns in all.
40All twelve cities were allotted to the clans of Merari's descendants, the remaining Levite clans.40The total number of towns allotted to the Merarite clans, who were the rest of the Levites, came to twelve.
41Within the Israelite possession there were forty-eight cities in all with their pasturelands for the Levites.41The towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were forty-eight in all, together with their pasturelands.
42Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.42Each of these towns had pasturelands surrounding it; this was true for all these towns.
43So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled there.43So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there.
44The LORD gave them rest on every side according to all he had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies were able to stand against them, for the LORD handed over all their enemies to them.44The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD gave all their enemies into their hands.
45None of the good promises the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed. Everything was fulfilled.45Not one of all the LORD's good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
