Christian Standard BibleNew Living Translation
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone.
I also saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God's dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God.3I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.4He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
Then the one seated on the throne said, "Look, I am making everything new." He also said, "Write, because these words are faithful and true."5And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.”
Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give to the thirsty from the spring of the water of life.6And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life.
The one who conquers will inherit these things, and I will be his God, and he will be my son.7All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.
But the cowards, faithless, detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars--their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."8“But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
Then one of the seven angels, who had held the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues, came and spoke with me: "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb."9Then one of the seven angels who held the seven bowls containing the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come with me! I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
He then carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,10So he took me in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.
arrayed with God's glory. Her radiance was like a precious jewel, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.11It shone with the glory of God and sparkled like a precious stone—like jasper as clear as crystal.
The city had a massive high wall, with twelve gates. Twelve angels were at the gates; the names of the twelve tribes of Israel's sons were inscribed on the gates.12The city wall was broad and high, with twelve gates guarded by twelve angels. And the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates.
There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.13There were three gates on each side—east, north, south, and west.
The city wall had twelve foundations, and the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb were on the foundations.14The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
The one who spoke with me had a golden measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.15The angel who talked to me held in his hand a gold measuring stick to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.
The city is laid out in a square; its length and width are the same. He measured the city with the rod at 12,000 stadia. Its length, width, and height are equal.16When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. In fact, its length and width and height were each 1,400 miles.
Then he measured its wall, 144 cubits according to human measurement, which the angel used.17Then he measured the walls and found them to be 216 feet thick (according to the human standard used by the angel).
The building material of its wall was jasper, and the city was pure gold clear as glass.18The wall was made of jasper, and the city was pure gold, as clear as glass.
The foundations of the city wall were adorned with every kind of jewel: the first foundation is jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,19The wall of the city was built on foundation stones inlaid with twelve precious stones: the first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald,
the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.20the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.
The twelve gates are twelve pearls; each individual gate was made of a single pearl. The main street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass.21The twelve gates were made of pearls—each gate from a single pearl! And the main street was pure gold, as clear as glass.
I did not see a temple in it, because the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.22I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb.23And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.
The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.24The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the world will enter the city in all their glory.
Its gates will never close by day because it will never be night there.25Its gates will never be closed at the end of day because there is no night there.
They will bring the glory and honor of the nations into it.26And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city.
Nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those written in the Lamb's book of life.27Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty—but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
