English Standard VersionBerean Study Bible
For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water;1For behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts is about to remove from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: the whole supply of food and water,
the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,2the mighty man and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the soothsayer and the elder,
the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms.3the commander of fifty and the dignitary, the counselor, the cunning magician, and the clever enchanter.
And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them.4“I will make mere lads their leaders, and children will rule over them.”
And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable.5The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will rise up against the old, and the base against the honorable.
For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”;6A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this heap of rubble.”
in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.”7On that day he will cry aloud: “I am not a healer. I have no food or clothing in my house. Do not make me leader of the people!”
For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.8For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they spoke and acted against the LORD, defying His glorious presence.
For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves.9The expression on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster upon themselves.
Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.10Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their labor.
Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him.11Woe to the wicked; disaster is upon them! For they will be repaid with what their hands have done.
My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths.12Youths oppress My people, and women rule over them. O My people, your guides mislead you; they turn you from your paths.
The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples.13The LORD arises to contend; He stands to judge the people.
The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses.14The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of His people: “You have devoured the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts.15Why do you crush My people and grind the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.
The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet,16The LORD also says: “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty—walking with heads held high and wanton eyes, prancing and skipping as they go, jingling the bracelets on their ankles—
therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts.17the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will make their foreheads bare.”
In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents;18In that day the Lord will take away their finery: their anklets and headbands and crescents;
the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves;19their pendants, bracelets, and veils;
the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets;20their headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes; their perfume bottles and charms;
the signet rings and nose rings;21their signet rings and nose rings;
the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags;22their festive robes, capes, cloaks, and purses;
the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils.23and their mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and shawls.
Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty.24Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.
Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle.25Your men will fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle.
And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground.26And the gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
