Psalm 140
English Standard VersionBerean Study Bible
Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; preserve me from violent men,1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Rescue me, O LORD, from evil men. Protect me from men of violence,
who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually.2who devise evil in their hearts and stir up war all day long.
They make their tongue sharp as a serpent’s, and under their lips is the venom of asps. Selah3They sharpen their tongues like snakes; the venom of vipers is on their lips. Selah
Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have planned to trip up my feet.4Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked. Keep me safe from men of violence who scheme to make me stumble.
The arrogant have hidden a trap for me, and with cords they have spread a net; beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah5The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net are spread along the path, and lures are set out for me. Selah
I say to the LORD, You are my God; give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O LORD!6I say to the LORD, “You are my God.” Hear, O LORD, my cry for help.
O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle.7O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You shield my head in the day of battle.
Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah8Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; do not promote their evil plans, lest they be exalted. Selah
As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!9May the heads of those who surround me be covered in the trouble their lips have caused.
Let burning coals fall upon them! Let them be cast into fire, into miry pits, no more to rise!10May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown into the fire, into the miry pits, never to rise again.
Let not the slanderer be established in the land; let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!11May no slanderer be established in the land; may calamity hunt down the man of violence.
I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy.12I know that the LORD upholds justice for the poor and defends the cause of the needy.
Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name; the upright shall dwell in your presence.13Surely the righteous will praise Your name; the upright will dwell in Your presence.
