Psalm 140
English Standard VersionNET Bible
Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; preserve me from violent men,1For the music director; a psalm of David. O LORD, rescue me from wicked men! Protect me from violent men,
who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually.2who plan ways to harm me. All day long they stir up conflict.
They make their tongue sharp as a serpent’s, and under their lips is the venom of asps. Selah3Their tongues wound like a serpent; a viper's venom is behind their lips. (Selah)
Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have planned to trip up my feet.4O LORD, shelter me from the power of the wicked! Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over.
The arrogant have hidden a trap for me, and with cords they have spread a net; beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah5Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah)
I say to the LORD, You are my God; give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O LORD!6I say to the LORD, "You are my God." O LORD, pay attention to my plea for mercy!
O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle.7O sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle.
Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah8O LORD, do not let the wicked have their way! Do not allow their plan to succeed when they attack! (Selah)
As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them!9As for the heads of those who surround me--may the harm done by their lips overwhelm them!
Let burning coals fall upon them! Let them be cast into fire, into miry pits, no more to rise!10May he rain down fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape.
Let not the slanderer be established in the land; let evil hunt down the violent man speedily!11A slanderer will not endure on the earth; calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down.
I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy.12I know that the LORD defends the cause of the oppressed and vindicates the poor.
Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name; the upright shall dwell in your presence.13Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name; the morally upright will live in your presence.
