| 3They make their tongue sharp as a serpent’s, and under their lips is the venom of asps. Selah | 3Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips. Interlude |
| 4Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have planned to trip up my feet. | 4O LORD, keep me out of the hands of the wicked. Protect me from those who are violent, for they are plotting against me. |
| 5The arrogant have hidden a trap for me, and with cords they have spread a net; beside the way they have set snares for me. Selah | 5The proud have set a trap to catch me; they have stretched out a net; they have placed traps all along the way. Interlude |

| 9As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their lips overwhelm them! | 9Let my enemies be destroyed by the very evil they have planned for me. |
| 10Let burning coals fall upon them! Let them be cast into fire, into miry pits, no more to rise! | 10Let burning coals fall down on their heads. Let them be thrown into the fire or into watery pits from which they can’t escape. |
| 11Let not the slanderer be established in the land; let evil hunt down the violent man speedily! | 11Don’t let liars prosper here in our land. Cause great disasters to fall on the violent. |
| 12I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy. | 12But I know the LORD will help those they persecute; he will give justice to the poor. |
| 13Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name; the upright shall dwell in your presence. | 13Surely righteous people are praising your name; the godly will live in your presence. |
