And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted much in David.1Saul told his son Jonathan and all his officials to kill David, but Saul's son Jonathan was very fond of David.
And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself.2So Jonathan told David, "My father Saul is trying to kill you. In the morning be careful and stay hidden in a secret place.
And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will tell you.”3I'll go out and stand by my father in the field where you are. I'll speak to my father about you. If I find out what he intends to do, I'll tell you."
And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you.4Jonathan spoke to his father Saul favorably about David. "The king shouldn't wrong his servant David because he has not wronged you and because what he has done has been very beneficial for you.
For he took his life in his hand and he struck down the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?”5He risked his life and struck down the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a spectacular deliverance for all Israel. You saw that and rejoiced, so why would you do wrong and shed innocent blood by killing David without cause?"
And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, “As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death.”6Saul listened to Jonathan, and swore by the life of the LORD that David would not be killed.
And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan reported to him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before.7Jonathan summoned David and told him all this. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and David served him as before.
And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great blow, so that they fled before him.8The war continued and David went out to fight against the Philistines. He thoroughly defeated them, and they fled before David.
Then a harmful spirit from the LORD came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing the lyre.9The evil spirit from the LORD attacked Saul while he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand and David was playing the lyre.
And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.10Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he jumped away from Saul and the spear stuck in the wall. That night David escaped and fled.
Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, told him, “If you do not escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.”11Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him so they could kill him in the morning. David's wife, Michal, told him, "If you don't escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you'll be put to death."
So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped.12So Michal let David down through the window, and he escaped and fled.
Michal took an image and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats’ hair at its head and covered it with the clothes.13Then Michal took the household idol and laid it on the bed with a cover of goat hair placed at its head. Then she covered it with clothes.
And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.”14When Saul sent the messengers to take David, Michal said, "He's sick."
Then Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.”15Then Saul sent messengers to check on David. He told them, "Bring him to me on the bed so I may kill him."
And when the messengers came in, behold, the image was in the bed, with the pillow of goats’ hair at its head.16The messengers went in, and there was the household idol in the bed with the cover of goat hair at its head!
Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me thus and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go. Why should I kill you?’”17Then Saul told Michal, "Why did you deceive me like this and let my enemy go so he could escape?" Michal told Saul, "He told me, 'Let me go or I'll kill you!'"
Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth.18David escaped and fled. He came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went and stayed at Naioth.
And it was told Saul, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.”19It was reported to Saul saying, "David is at Naioth in Ramah right now."
Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.20Saul sent messengers to take David, and they saw a group of prophets caught up in prophetic ecstasy, with Samuel standing beside them leading them. Then the Spirit of God came on Saul's messengers, and they also were caught up in prophetic ecstasy.
When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied.21They reported this to Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also were caught up in prophetic ecstasy.
Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.”22Then Saul himself went to Ramah, and he arrived at the large well that is in Secu. He asked, "Where are Samuel and David?" Someone replied, "They're at Naioth in Ramah."
And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah.23Saul went to Naioth in Ramah, and the Spirit of God came on him also. He continued in prophetic ecstasy until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”24He also removed his clothes and was caught up in prophetic ecstasy right in front of Samuel! He fell down naked and remained there all that day and all night. That is why people say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"
