Exodus 5
ESV Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionNew International Version
Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”1Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.'"
But Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”2Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go."
Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.”3Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword."
But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people away from their work? Get back to your burdens.”4But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!"
And Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them rest from their burdens!”5Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working."
The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their foremen,6That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people:
“You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks, as in the past; let them go and gather straw for themselves.7"You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.
But the number of bricks that they made in the past you shall impose on them, you shall by no means reduce it, for they are idle. Therefore they cry, ‘Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.’8But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'
Let heavier work be laid on the men that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words.”9Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies."
So the taskmasters and the foremen of the people went out and said to the people, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I will not give you straw.10Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw.
Go and get your straw yourselves wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced in the least.’”11Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.'"
So the people were scattered throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.12So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw.
The taskmasters were urgent, saying, “Complete your work, your daily task each day, as when there was straw.”13The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw."
And the foremen of the people of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, “Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today and yesterday, as in the past?”14And Pharaoh's slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, "Why haven't you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?"
Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, “Why do you treat your servants like this?15Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way?
No straw is given to your servants, yet they say to us, ‘Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people.”16Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people."
But he said, “You are idle, you are idle; that is why you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’17Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are--lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.'
Go now and work. No straw will be given you, but you must still deliver the same number of bricks.”18Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks."
The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in trouble when they said, “You shall by no means reduce your number of bricks, your daily task each day.”19The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day."
They met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting for them, as they came out from Pharaoh;20When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them,
and they said to them, “The LORD look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”21and they said, "May the LORD look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us."
Then Moses turned to the LORD and said, “O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me?22Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?
For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all.”23Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."
