This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.1This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See! I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way. 2As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.”
He is a voice calling out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'" 3“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’ ”
John was baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism about repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him, being baptized by him while they confessed their sins. 5People went out to him from all of Jerusalem and the countryside of Judea. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
Now John was dressed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. He ate grasshoppers and wild honey. 6John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
He kept proclaiming, "The one who is coming after me is stronger than I am, and I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandal straps. 7And he began to proclaim: “After me will come One more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
I baptized you with water, but it is he who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."8I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 10As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.
Then a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you!"11And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
At once the Spirit drove him into the wilderness. 12At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness,
He was in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by Satan. He was among wild animals, and angels were ministering to him.13and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.
Now after John had been arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the gospel about the kingdom of God. 14After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God.
He said, "The time is now! The kingdom of God is near! Repent, and keep believing the gospel!"15“The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”
While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the sea because they were fishermen. 16As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
Jesus told them, "Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of people!" 17“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
So immediately they left their nets and followed him. 18And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat repairing their nets. 19Going on a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat, mending their nets.
He immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.20Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.
Then they went to Capernaum. As soon as it was the Sabbaths, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 21Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum, and right away Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.
The people were utterly amazed at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one with authority, and not like their scribes. 22The people were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
All of a sudden, there was a man in their synagogue who had an unclean spirit! He screamed, 23Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue:
"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"24“What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he ordered, "and come out of him!" 25But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”
At this, the unclean spirit shook the man, cried out with a loud voice, and came out of him.26At this, the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and came out with a loud shriek.
All the people were so stunned that they kept saying to each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He tells even the unclean spirits what to do, and they obey him!" 27All the people were amazed and began to ask one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him!”
At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.28And the news about Jesus spread quickly through the whole region of Galilee.
After they left the synagogue, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew, along with James and John. 29As soon as Jesus and His companions had left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed, sick with a fever, so they promptly told Jesus about her. 30Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and they promptly told Jesus about her.
He went up to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began serving them. 31So He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them.
When evening came, after the sun had set, people started bringing to him everyone who was sick or possessed by demons. 32That evening, after sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick and demon-possessed,
In fact, the whole city gathered at the door. 33and the whole town gathered at the door.
He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. However, he wouldn't allow the demons to speak because they knew who he was.34And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.
In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went to a deserted place and prayed there. 35Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray.
Simon and his companions searched frantically for him. 36Simon and his companions went to look for Him,
When they found him, they told him, "Everyone's looking for you."37and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!”
"Let's go to the neighboring town," he replied, "so I can preach there, too, because that's why I came." 38But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.”
So he went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.39So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
Then a leper came to Jesus and began pleading with him. He fell on his knees and told him, "If you want to, you can make me clean."40Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and told him, "I do want to. Be made clean!" 41Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”
Instantly the leprosy left him, and he was clean.42And immediately the leprosy left him, and the man was cleansed.
Then Jesus sternly warned him and encouraged him to go at once. 43Jesus promptly sent him away with a stern warning:
He told the man, "Be sure that you don't tell anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest, and then offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded as proof to the authorities."44“See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
But when the man left, he began to proclaim it freely. He spread the news so widely that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly, but had to stay out in deserted places. Still, people kept coming to him from everywhere.45But the man went out and openly began to proclaim and spread the news. Consequently, Jesus could no longer enter a town in plain view, but He stayed out in solitary places. Yet people came to Him from every quarter.
