Psalm 81
International Standard VersionBerean Study Bible
Sing joyfully to God, our strength. Raise a shout to the God of Jacob.1For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. Of Asaph. Sing for joy to God our strength; make a joyful noise to the God of Jacob.
Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant-sounding lyre along with the harp.2Lift up a song, strike the tambourine, play the sweet-sounding harp and lyre.
Blow the ram's horn when there is a New Moon, when there is a full moon, on our festival day,3Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon, and at the full moon on the day of our Feast.
because it is a statute in Israel, an ordinance by the God of Jacob,4For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
a decree that he prescribed for Joseph when he went throughout the land of Egypt, speaking a language I did not recognize. 5He ordained it as a testimony for Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt, where I heard an unfamiliar language:
I removed the burden from your shoulder; your hands were freed of the burdensome basket. 6“I relieved his shoulder of the burden; his hands were freed from the basket.
In a time of need you called out and I delivered you; I answered you from the dark thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Interlude7You called out in distress, and I rescued you; I answered you from the cloud of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
Listen, My people and I will warn you. Israel, if only you would obey me!8Hear, O My people, and I will warn you: O Israel, if only you would listen to Me!
You must neither have a foreign god over you or worship a strange god.9There must be no strange god among you, nor shall you bow to a foreign god.
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, open your mouth that I may fill it.10I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.
Yet my people didn't obey my voice; Israel didn't submit to me.11But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not obey Me.
So I allowed them to continue in their stubbornness, living by their own advice.12So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.
If only my people would obey me, if only Israel would walk in my ways!13If only My people would listen to Me, if Israel would follow My ways,
Then I would quickly subdue their enemies. I would turn against their foes.14how soon I would subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their foes!
Those who hate the LORD will cringe before him; their punishment will be permanent.15Those who hate the LORD would feign obedience, and their doom would last forever.
But I will feed Israel with the finest wheat, satisfying you with honey from the rock.16But I would feed you the finest wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
