Psalm 81
International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
Sing joyfully to God, our strength. Raise a shout to the God of Jacob.1Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob!
Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant-sounding lyre along with the harp.2Raise a song; sound the tambourine, the sweet lyre with the harp.
Blow the ram's horn when there is a New Moon, when there is a full moon, on our festival day,3Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.
because it is a statute in Israel, an ordinance by the God of Jacob,4For it is a statute for Israel, a rule of the God of Jacob.
a decree that he prescribed for Joseph when he went throughout the land of Egypt, speaking a language I did not recognize. 5He made it a decree in Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt. I hear a language I had not known:
I removed the burden from your shoulder; your hands were freed of the burdensome basket. 6“I relieved your shoulder of the burden; your hands were freed from the basket.
In a time of need you called out and I delivered you; I answered you from the dark thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Interlude7In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
Listen, My people and I will warn you. Israel, if only you would obey me!8Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
You must neither have a foreign god over you or worship a strange god.9There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, open your mouth that I may fill it.10I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
Yet my people didn't obey my voice; Israel didn't submit to me.11“But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me.
So I allowed them to continue in their stubbornness, living by their own advice.12So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels.
If only my people would obey me, if only Israel would walk in my ways!13Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!
Then I would quickly subdue their enemies. I would turn against their foes.14I would soon subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes.
Those who hate the LORD will cringe before him; their punishment will be permanent.15Those who hate the LORD would cringe toward him, and their fate would last forever.
But I will feed Israel with the finest wheat, satisfying you with honey from the rock.16But he would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
