When the uproar was over, Paul sent for the disciples and encouraged them. Then he said goodbye to them and left to go to Macedonia. 1And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia.
He went through those regions and encouraged the people with everything he had to say. Then he went to Greece 2And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece,
and stayed there for three months. When he was about to sail for Syria, a plot was initiated against him by the Jews, so he decided to go back through Macedonia. 3And there abode three months. And when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia.
He was accompanied by Sopater (the son of Pyrrhus) from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia. 4And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.
These men went on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas. 5These going before tarried for us at Troas.
After the Festival of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi, and days later we joined them in Troas and stayed there for seven days.6And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days.
On the first day of the week, when we had met to break bread, Paul began to address the people. Since he intended to leave the next day, he went on speaking until midnight. 7And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
Now there were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 8And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together.
A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in a window, began to sink off into a deep sleep as Paul kept speaking longer and longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead. 9And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.
But Paul went down, bent over him, took him into his arms, and said, "Stop being alarmed, because he's still alive." 10And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.
Then he went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. He talked with them for a long time, until dawn, and then left. 11When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.
They took the young man away alive and were greatly relieved.12And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.
We proceeded to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we intended to pick up Paul. He had arranged it this way, since he had planned to travel there on foot. 13And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go afoot.
When he met us in Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene. 14And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene.
We sailed from there and on the following day arrived off Chios. The next day, we crossed over to Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The day after that, we came to Miletus. 15And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in Asia, as he was in a hurry to get to Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost, if that was possible.16For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
From Miletus he sent messengers to Ephesus to ask the elders of the church to meet with him. 17And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.
When they came to him, he told them, "You know how I lived among you the entire time from the first day I set foot in Asia. 18And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,
I served the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. 19Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:
I never shrank from telling you anything that would help you nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house. 20And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,
I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus.21Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 22And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:
except that in town after town the Holy Spirit assures me that imprisonment and suffering are waiting for me. 23Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.
But I don't place any value on my life, if only I can finish my race and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.24But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
"Now I know that none of you among whom I traveled preaching about the kingdom will ever see my face again. 25And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.
I therefore declare to you today that I'm not responsible for the blood of any of you, 26Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.
because I never shrank from telling you the whole plan of God. 27For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
Pay attention to yourselves and to the entire flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to be shepherds of God's church, which he acquired with his own blood. 28Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
I know that when I'm gone, savage wolves will come among you and not spare the flock. 29For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
Indeed, some of your own men will arise and distort the truth in order to lure the disciples into following them. 30Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
So be alert! Remember that for three years, night and day, I never stopped tearfully warning each of you.31Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.
"I'm now entrusting you to God and to the message of his grace, which is able to build you up and secure for you an inheritance among all who are sanctified. 32And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
I never desired anyone's silver, gold, or clothes. 33I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel.
You yourselves know that I worked with my own hands to support myself and those who were with me. 34Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.
In every way I showed you that by working hard like this we should help the weak and remember the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" 35I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
When Paul had said this, he knelt down and prayed with all of them. 36And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all.
All of them cried and cried as they put their arms around Paul and kissed him affectionately. 37And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul's neck, and kissed him,
They were especially sorrowful because of what he had said—that they would never see his face again. Then they took him to the ship.38Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship.
