When the uproar was over, Paul sent for the disciples and encouraged them. Then he said goodbye to them and left to go to Macedonia. 1When the uproar was over, Paul sent for the believers and encouraged them. Then he said good-bye and left for Macedonia.
He went through those regions and encouraged the people with everything he had to say. Then he went to Greece 2While there, he encouraged the believers in all the towns he passed through. Then he traveled down to Greece,
and stayed there for three months. When he was about to sail for Syria, a plot was initiated against him by the Jews, so he decided to go back through Macedonia. 3where he stayed for three months. He was preparing to sail back to Syria when he discovered a plot by some Jews against his life, so he decided to return through Macedonia.
He was accompanied by Sopater (the son of Pyrrhus) from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia. 4Several men were traveling with him. They were Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia.
These men went on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas. 5They went on ahead and waited for us at Troas.
After the Festival of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi, and days later we joined them in Troas and stayed there for seven days.6After the Passover ended, we boarded a ship at Philippi in Macedonia and five days later joined them in Troas, where we stayed a week. Paul’s Final Visit to Troas
On the first day of the week, when we had met to break bread, Paul began to address the people. Since he intended to leave the next day, he went on speaking until midnight. 7On the first day of the week, we gathered with the local believers to share in the Lord’s Supper. Paul was preaching to them, and since he was leaving the next day, he kept talking until midnight.
Now there were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting. 8The upstairs room where we met was lighted with many flickering lamps.
A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in a window, began to sink off into a deep sleep as Paul kept speaking longer and longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead. 9As Paul spoke on and on, a young man named Eutychus, sitting on the windowsill, became very drowsy. Finally, he fell sound asleep and dropped three stories to his death below.
But Paul went down, bent over him, took him into his arms, and said, "Stop being alarmed, because he's still alive." 10Paul went down, bent over him, and took him into his arms. “Don’t worry,” he said, “he’s alive!”
Then he went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. He talked with them for a long time, until dawn, and then left. 11Then they all went back upstairs, shared in the Lord’s Supper, and ate together. Paul continued talking to them until dawn, and then he left.
They took the young man away alive and were greatly relieved.12Meanwhile, the young man was taken home alive and well, and everyone was greatly relieved. Paul Meets the Ephesian Elders
We proceeded to the ship and sailed for Assos, where we intended to pick up Paul. He had arranged it this way, since he had planned to travel there on foot. 13Paul went by land to Assos, where he had arranged for us to join him, while we traveled by ship.
When he met us in Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene. 14He joined us there, and we sailed together to Mitylene.
We sailed from there and on the following day arrived off Chios. The next day, we crossed over to Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The day after that, we came to Miletus. 15The next day we sailed past the island of Kios. The following day we crossed to the island of Samos, and a day later we arrived at Miletus.
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in Asia, as he was in a hurry to get to Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost, if that was possible.16Paul had decided to sail on past Ephesus, for he didn’t want to spend any more time in the province of Asia. He was hurrying to get to Jerusalem, if possible, in time for the Festival of Pentecost.
From Miletus he sent messengers to Ephesus to ask the elders of the church to meet with him. 17But when we landed at Miletus, he sent a message to the elders of the church at Ephesus, asking them to come and meet him.
When they came to him, he told them, "You know how I lived among you the entire time from the first day I set foot in Asia. 18When they arrived he declared, “You know that from the day I set foot in the province of Asia until now
I served the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. 19I have done the Lord’s work humbly and with many tears. I have endured the trials that came to me from the plots of the Jews.
I never shrank from telling you anything that would help you nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house. 20I never shrank back from telling you what you needed to hear, either publicly or in your homes.
I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus.21I have had one message for Jews and Greeks alike—the necessity of repenting from sin and turning to God, and of having faith in our Lord Jesus.
And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 22“And now I am bound by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem. I don’t know what awaits me,
except that in town after town the Holy Spirit assures me that imprisonment and suffering are waiting for me. 23except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead.
But I don't place any value on my life, if only I can finish my race and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.24But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.
"Now I know that none of you among whom I traveled preaching about the kingdom will ever see my face again. 25“And now I know that none of you to whom I have preached the Kingdom will ever see me again.
I therefore declare to you today that I'm not responsible for the blood of any of you, 26I declare today that I have been faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death, it’s not my fault,
because I never shrank from telling you the whole plan of God. 27for I didn’t shrink from declaring all that God wants you to know.
Pay attention to yourselves and to the entire flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to be shepherds of God's church, which he acquired with his own blood. 28“So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock—his church, purchased with his own blood —over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders.
I know that when I'm gone, savage wolves will come among you and not spare the flock. 29I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock.
Indeed, some of your own men will arise and distort the truth in order to lure the disciples into following them. 30Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.
So be alert! Remember that for three years, night and day, I never stopped tearfully warning each of you.31Watch out! Remember the three years I was with you—my constant watch and care over you night and day, and my many tears for you.
"I'm now entrusting you to God and to the message of his grace, which is able to build you up and secure for you an inheritance among all who are sanctified. 32“And now I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself.
I never desired anyone's silver, gold, or clothes. 33“I have never coveted anyone’s silver or gold or fine clothes.
You yourselves know that I worked with my own hands to support myself and those who were with me. 34You know that these hands of mine have worked to supply my own needs and even the needs of those who were with me.
In every way I showed you that by working hard like this we should help the weak and remember the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" 35And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
When Paul had said this, he knelt down and prayed with all of them. 36When he had finished speaking, he knelt and prayed with them.
All of them cried and cried as they put their arms around Paul and kissed him affectionately. 37They all cried as they embraced and kissed him good-bye.
They were especially sorrowful because of what he had said—that they would never see his face again. Then they took him to the ship.38They were sad most of all because he had said that they would never see him again. Then they escorted him down to the ship.
