Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His gracious love exists forever.1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, and his loyal love endures!
Let those who have been redeemed by the LORD declare it— those whom he redeemed from the power of the enemy,2Let those delivered by the LORD speak out, those whom he delivered from the power of the enemy,
those whom he gathered from other lands— from the east, west, north, and south. 3and gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south.
They wandered in desolate wilderness; they found no road to a city where they could live.4They wandered through the wilderness on a desert road; they found no city in which to live.
Hungry and thirsty, their spirits failed.5They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.6They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He led them in a straight way to find a city where they could live.7He led them on a level road, that they might find a city in which to live.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and his awesome deeds for mankind.8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
He has satisfied the one who thirsts, filling the hungry with what is good.9For he has satisfied those who thirst, and those who hunger he has filled with food.
Some sat in deepest darkness, shackled with cruel iron,10They sat in utter darkness, bound in painful iron chains,
because they had rebelled against the command of God, despising the advice of the Most High.11because they had rebelled against God's commands, and rejected the instructions of the sovereign king.
He humbled them through suffering, as they stumbled without a helper.12So he used suffering to humble them; they stumbled and no one helped them up.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; he delivered them from their distress.13They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
And he brought them out from darkness and the shadow of death, shattering their chains.14He brought them out of the utter darkness, and tore off their shackles.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds to mankind.15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
For he shattered bronze gates and cut through iron bars.16For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars.
Because of their rebellious ways, fools suffered for their iniquities.17They acted like fools in their rebellious ways, and suffered because of their sins.
They loathed all food, and even reached the gates of death.18They lost their appetite for all food, and they drew near the gates of death.
Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, he delivered them from certain destruction.19They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He issued his command and healed them; he delivered them from their destruction.20He sent them an assuring word and healed them; he rescued them from the pits where they were trapped.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love, and for his awesome deeds for mankind.21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and talk about his works with shouts of joy.22Let them present thank offerings, and loudly proclaim what he has done!
Those who go down to the sea in ships, who work in the great waters,23Some traveled on the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters.
witnessed the works of the LORD— his awesome deeds in the ocean's depth.24They witnessed the acts of the LORD, his amazing feats on the deep water.
He spoke and stirred up a windstorm that made its waves surge.25He gave the order for a windstorm, and it stirred up the waves of the sea.
The people ascended skyward and descended to the depths, their courage melting away in their peril.26They reached up to the sky, then dropped into the depths. The sailors' strength left them because the danger was so great.
They reeled and staggered like a drunkard, as all their wisdom became useless.27They swayed and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective.
Yet when they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, the LORD brought them out of their distress.28They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He calmed the storm and its waves quieted down.29He calmed the storm, and the waves grew silent.
So they rejoiced that the waves became quiet, and he led them to their desired haven.30The sailors rejoiced because the waves grew quiet, and he led them to the harbor they desired.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and for his awesome deeds on behalf of mankind.31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the counsel of the elders.32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people! Let them praise him in the place where the leaders preside!
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into dry ground,33He turned streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land,
and a fruitful land into a salty waste, due to the wickedness of its inhabitants.34and a fruitful land into a barren place, because of the sin of its inhabitants.
He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water.35As for his people, he turned a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into springs of water.
There he settled the hungry, where they built a city to live in.36He allowed the hungry to settle there, and they established a city in which to live.
They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a productive harvest.37They cultivated fields, and planted vineyards, which yielded a harvest of fruit.
Then he blessed them, and they became numerous; he multiplied their cattle. 38He blessed them so that they became very numerous. He would not allow their cattle to decrease in number.
But they became few in number, and humiliated by continued oppression, agony, and sorrow.39As for their enemies, they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress and suffering.
Having poured contempt on their nobles, causing them to err aimlessly in the way.40He would pour contempt upon princes, and he made them wander in a wasteland with no road.
Yet he lifted the needy from affliction and made them families like a flock.41Yet he protected the needy from oppression, and cared for his families like a flock of sheep.
The upright see it and rejoice, but the mouth of an evil person is shut.42When the godly see this, they rejoice, and every sinner shuts his mouth.
Let whoever is wise observe these things, that they may comprehend the gracious love of the LORD.43Whoever is wise, let him take note of these things! Let them consider the LORD's acts of loyal love!
