KJV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
King James BibleEnglish Standard Version
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.1Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.”
And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.2And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground.
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.3In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground,
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:4and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering,
But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.5but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?6The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.7If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.8Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?9Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.10And the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.
And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;11And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.12When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.13Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.14Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.15Then the LORD said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.
And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.16Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.17Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.
And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.19And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.21His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.
And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.22Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.23Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.24If Cain’s revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold.”
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.25And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.26To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.
