And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.1Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, "I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD."
And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.2Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.3So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground.
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:4Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering;
But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.5but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.7"If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it."
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.8Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?9Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.10He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground.
And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;11"Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.12"When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth."
And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.13Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to bear!
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.14"Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."
And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.15So the LORD said to him, "Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.
And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.16Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.17Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son.
And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.18Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech.
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.19Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah.
And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.21His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.
And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.22As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Give heed to my speech, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me;
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold."
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.25Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, "God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him."
And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.26To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the LORD.
