And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.1There was a time when the entire earth spoke a common language with an identical vocabulary.
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.2As people migrated westward, they came across a plain in the region of Shinar and settled there.
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.3They told each other, "Come on! Let's burn bricks thoroughly." They used bricks for stone and tar for mortar.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.4Then they said, "Come on! Let's build ourselves a city and a tower, with its summit in the heavens, and let's make a name for ourselves so we won't be scattered over the surface of the whole earth."
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.5However, the LORD descended to look over the city and the tower that the humans were building.
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.6The LORD said, "Look! They are one people with the same language for all of them, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. Nothing that they have a mind to do will be impossible for them!
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.7Come on! Let's go down there and confuse their language, so that they won't understand each other's speech."
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.8So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the surface of the whole earth, so that they had to stop building the city.
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.9Therefore it was called Babylon, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the surface of the entire earth.

And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.28Haran died during his father's lifetime in the land of his birth, that is, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.29Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah. She was the daughter of Haran, who was the father of Milcah and Iscah.
But Sarai was barren; she had no child.30Sarai was barren, so she had not borne children.
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.31Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (Haran's son), and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and they journeyed together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. But when they had gone as far as Haran, they settled there,
And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.32where Terah died at the age of 205 years.
