At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,1At that time Herod the tetrarch, hearing about the fame of Jesus,
And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.2told his servants, "This is John the Baptist! He has been raised from the dead, and that's why these miracles are being done by him."
For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.3Herod had arrested John, bound him with chains, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.4John had been telling him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.5Although Herod wanted to kill him, he was afraid of the crowd, since they regarded John as a prophet.
But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.6But when Herod's birthday celebration was held, the daughter of Herodias danced before the guests. She pleased Herod
Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked for.
And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.8Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me, right here on a platter, the head of John the Baptist."
And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.9Under pressure because of his promises and his assembled guests, the king ordered that it be done.
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.10So he sent word and had John beheaded in prison.
And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she took it to her mother.
And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.12When John's disciples came, they carried off the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.13When Jesus heard this, he left that place and went by boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of it and followed him on foot from the neighboring towns.
And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.14When he got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion for them and healed their sick.
And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.15When evening had come, the disciples went to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and it's already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.16But Jesus told them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat."
And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.17They told him, "We don't have anything here except five loaves of bread and two fish."
He said, Bring them hither to me.18He said, "Bring them to me."
And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and gave them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.20All of them ate and were filled. Then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.
And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.21Now those who had eaten were about 5,000 men, besides women and children.
And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.22Jesus immediately had the disciples get into a boat and cross to the other side ahead of him, while he sent the crowds away.
And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.23After dismissing the crowds, he went up on a hillside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.
But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.24By this time the boat was in the middle of the sea and was being battered by the waves, because the wind was against them.
And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.25Shortly before dawn, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and cried out, "It's a ghost!" And they screamed in terror.
But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.27"Have courage!" Jesus immediately told them. "It's me. Stop being afraid!"
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.28Peter answered him, "Lord, if it's you, order me to come to you on the water."
And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.29Jesus said, "Come on!" So Peter got down out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came to Jesus.
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.30But when he noticed the strong wind, he was frightened. As he began to sink, he shouted, "Lord, save me!"
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?31At once Jesus reached out his hand, caught him, and asked him, "You who have so little faith, why did you doubt?"
And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.32As they got into the boat, the wind stopped blowing.
Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.33Then the men in the boat began to worship Jesus, saying, "You certainly are the Son of God!"
And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.34They crossed over and came ashore at Gennesaret.
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;35When the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word throughout that region and brought him everyone who was sick.
And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.36They kept begging him to let them touch just the tassel of his garment, and everyone who touched it was completely healed.
