KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.1Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end.
And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;2It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;3Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.
He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.4So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist,
After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.5and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.
Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?6When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.7Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.”
Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.8“No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!” Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”
Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.9Simon Peter exclaimed, “Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!”
Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.10Jesus replied, “A person who has bathed all over does not need to wash, except for the feet, to be entirely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not all of you.”
For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.11For Jesus knew who would betray him. That is what he meant when he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?12After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing?
Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am.
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.15 I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.17 Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them. Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.18 “I am not saying these things to all of you; I know the ones I have chosen. But this fulfills the Scripture that says, ‘The one who eats my food has turned against me.’
Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.19 I tell you this beforehand, so that when it happens you will believe that I Am the Messiah.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.20 I tell you the truth, anyone who welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me.”
When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.21Now Jesus was deeply troubled, and he exclaimed, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me!”
Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.22The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he could mean.
Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.23The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the table.
Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.24Simon Peter motioned to him to ask, “Who’s he talking about?”
He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?25So that disciple leaned over to Jesus and asked, “Lord, who is it?”
Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.26Jesus responded, “It is the one to whom I give the bread I dip in the bowl.” And when he had dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.
And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.27When Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus told him, “Hurry and do what you’re going to do.”
Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.28None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant.
For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.29Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor.
He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.30So Judas left at once, going out into the night. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.31As soon as Judas left the room, Jesus said, “The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory, and God will be glorified because of him.
If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.32 And since God receives glory because of the Son, he will give his own glory to the Son, and he will do so at once.
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.33 Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can’t come where I am going.
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.36Simon Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?” And Jesus replied, “You can’t go with me now, but you will follow me later.”
Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.37“But why can’t I come now, Lord?” he asked. “I’m ready to die for you.”
Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.38Jesus answered, “Die for me? I tell you the truth, Peter—before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.
