1Then Moses and the elders of Israel charged the people, saying, "Keep all the commandments which I command you today.1Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, "Keep every command I am giving you today.
2"So it shall be on the day when you cross the Jordan to the land which the LORD your God gives you, that you shall set up for yourself large stones and coat them with lime2At the time you cross the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, you must set up large stones and cover them with plaster.
3and write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over, so that you may enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you.3Write all the words of this law on the stones after you cross to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
4"So it shall be when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up on Mount Ebal, these stones, as I am commanding you today, and you shall coat them with lime.4When you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and you are to cover them with plaster.
5"Moreover, you shall build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones; you shall not wield an iron tool on them.5Build an altar of stones there to the LORD your God--you must not use any iron tool on them.
6"You shall build the altar of the LORD your God of uncut stones, and you shall offer on it burnt offerings to the LORD your God;6Use uncut stones to build the altar of the LORD your God and offer burnt offerings to the LORD your God on it.
7and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and rejoice before the LORD your God.7There you are to sacrifice fellowship offerings, eat, and rejoice in the presence of the LORD your God.
8"You shall write on the stones all the words of this law very distinctly."8Write clearly all the words of this law on the plastered stones."
9Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying, "Be silent and listen, O Israel! This day you have become a people for the LORD your God.9Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, "Be silent, Israel, and listen! This day you have become the people of the LORD your God.
10"You shall therefore obey the LORD your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I command you today."10Obey the LORD your God and follow His commands and statutes I am giving you today."
11Moses also charged the people on that day, saying,11On that day Moses commanded the people, "
12"When you cross the Jordan, these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.12When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
13"For the curse, these shall stand on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.13And these tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to deliver the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
14"The Levites shall then answer and say to all the men of Israel with a loud voice,14The Levites will proclaim in a loud voice to every Israelite:
15Cursed is the man who makes an idol or a molten image, an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.' And all the people shall answer and say, 'Amen.'15The person who makes a carved idol or cast image, which is detestable to the LORD, the work of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret is cursed.' And all the people will reply, 'Amen!'
16'Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'16The one who dishonors his father or mother is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
17'Cursed is he who moves his neighbor's boundary mark.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'17The one who moves his neighbor's boundary marker is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
18Cursed is he who misleads a blind person on the road.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'18The one who leads a blind person astray on the road is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
19'Cursed is he who distorts the justice due an alien, orphan, and widow.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'19The one who denies justice to a foreigner, a fatherless child, or a widow is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
20'Cursed is he who lies with his father's wife, because he has uncovered his father's skirt.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'20The one who sleeps with his father's wife is cursed, for he has violated his father's marriage bed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
21'Cursed is he who lies with any animal.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'21The one who has sexual intercourse with any animal is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
22'Cursed is he who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or of his mother.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'22The one who sleeps with his sister, whether his father's daughter or his mother's daughter is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
23'Cursed is he who lies with his mother-in-law.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'23The one who sleeps with his mother-in-law is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
24'Cursed is he who strikes his neighbor in secret.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'24The one who secretly kills his neighbor is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
25'Cursed is he who accepts a bribe to strike down an innocent person.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'25The one who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'
26'Cursed is he who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'26Anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice is cursed.' And all the people will say, 'Amen!'"
