Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, and his loyal love endures! 1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.
Let those delivered by the LORD speak out, those whom he delivered from the power of the enemy, 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy
and gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south. 3and gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
They wandered through the wilderness on a desert road; they found no city in which to live. 4Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path to a city in which to dwell.
They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion. 5They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted within them.
They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
He led them on a level road, that they might find a city in which to live. 7He led them on a straight path to reach a city where they could live.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
For he has satisfied those who thirst, and those who hunger he has filled with food. 9For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
They sat in utter darkness, bound in painful iron chains, 10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and chains,
because they had rebelled against God's commands, and rejected the instructions of the sovereign king. 11because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
So he used suffering to humble them; they stumbled and no one helped them up. 12He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
He brought them out of the utter darkness, and tore off their shackles. 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke away their chains.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars. 16For He has broken down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.
They acted like fools in their rebellious ways, and suffered because of their sins. 17Fools, in their rebellious ways, and through their iniquities, suffered affliction.
They lost their appetite for all food, and they drew near the gates of death. 18They loathed all food and drew near to the gates of death.
They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
He sent them an assuring word and healed them; he rescued them from the pits where they were trapped. 20He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
Let them present thank offerings, and loudly proclaim what he has done! 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare His works with rejoicing.
Some traveled on the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters. 23Others went out to sea in ships, conducting trade on the mighty waters.
They witnessed the acts of the LORD, his amazing feats on the deep water. 24They saw the works of the LORD, and His wonders in the deep.
He gave the order for a windstorm, and it stirred up the waves of the sea. 25For He spoke and raised a tempest that lifted the waves of the sea.
They reached up to the sky, then dropped into the depths. The sailors' strength left them because the danger was so great. 26They mounted up to the heavens, then sunk to the depths; their courage melted in their anguish.
They swayed and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective. 27They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and all their skill was useless.
They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles. 28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.
He calmed the storm, and the waves grew silent. 29He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
The sailors rejoiced because the waves grew quiet, and he led them to the harbor they desired. 30They rejoiced in the silence, and He guided them to the harbor they desired.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people! 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people! Let them praise him in the place where the leaders preside! 32Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.
He turned streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land, 33He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water into thirsty ground,
and a fruitful land into a barren place, because of the sin of its inhabitants. 34and fruitful land into fields of salt, because of the wickedness of its dwellers.
As for his people, he turned a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into springs of water. 35He turns a desert into pools of water and a dry land into flowing springs.
He allowed the hungry to settle there, and they established a city in which to live. 36He causes the hungry to settle there, that they may establish a city in which to dwell.
They cultivated fields, and planted vineyards, which yielded a harvest of fruit. 37They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
He blessed them so that they became very numerous. He would not allow their cattle to decrease in number. 38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish.
As for their enemies, they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress and suffering. 39When they are decreased and humbled by oppression, evil, and sorrow,
He would pour contempt upon princes, and he made them wander in a wasteland with no road. 40He pours out contempt on the nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
Yet he protected the needy from oppression, and cared for his families like a flock of sheep. 41But He lifts the needy from affliction and increases their families like flocks.
When the godly see this, they rejoice, and every sinner shuts his mouth. 42The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth.
Whoever is wise, let him take note of these things! Let them consider the LORD's acts of loyal love! 43Let him who is wise pay heed to these things and consider the loving devotion of the LORD.
