NET BibleBerean Study Bible
A psalm of Asaph. O God, foreigners have invaded your chosen land; they have polluted your holy temple and turned Jerusalem into a heap of ruins. 1A Psalm of Asaph. The nations, O God, have invaded Your inheritance; they have defiled Your holy temple and reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
They have given the corpses of your servants to the birds of the sky; the flesh of your loyal followers to the beasts of the earth. 2They have given the corpses of Your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.
They have made their blood flow like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury them. 3They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead.
We have become an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. 4We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those around us.
How long will this go on, O LORD? Will you stay angry forever? How long will your rage burn like fire? 5How long, O LORD? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out your anger on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not pray to you! 6Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You, on the kingdoms that refuse to call on Your name,
For they have devoured Jacob and destroyed his home. 7for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland.
Do not hold us accountable for the sins of earlier generations! Quickly send your compassion our way, for we are in serious trouble! 8Do not hold past sins against us; let Your compassion come quickly, for we are brought low.
Help us, O God, our deliverer! For the sake of your glorious reputation, rescue us! Forgive our sins for the sake of your reputation! 9Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; deliver us and atone for our sins, for the sake of Your name.
Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our very eyes may the shed blood of your servants be avenged among the nations! 10Why should the nations ask, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations Your vengeance for the bloodshed of Your servants.
Listen to the painful cries of the prisoners! Use your great strength to set free those condemned to die! 11May the groans of the captives reach You; by the strength of Your arm preserve those condemned to death.
Pay back our neighbors in full! May they be insulted the same way they insulted you, O Lord! 12Pay back into the laps of our neighbors sevenfold the reproach they hurled at You, O Lord.
Then we, your people, the sheep of your pasture, will continually thank you. We will tell coming generations of your praiseworthy acts. 13Then we Your people, the sheep of Your pasture, will thank You forever; from generation to generation we will declare Your praise.
