| 2Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant sounding harp, and the ten-stringed instrument! | 2Lift up a song, strike the tambourine, play the sweet-sounding harp and lyre. |
| 3Sound the ram's horn on the day of the new moon, and on the day of the full moon when our festival begins. | 3Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon, and at the full moon on the day of our Feast. |
| 4For observing the festival is a requirement for Israel; it is an ordinance given by the God of Jacob. | 4For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob. |
| 5He decreed it as a regulation in Joseph, when he attacked the land of Egypt. I heard a voice I did not recognize. | 5He ordained it as a testimony for Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt, where I heard an unfamiliar language: |
| 6It said: "I removed the burden from his shoulder; his hands were released from holding the basket. | 6“I relieved his shoulder of the burden; his hands were freed from the basket. |
| 7In your distress you called out and I rescued you. I answered you from a dark thundercloud. I tested you at the waters of Meribah. (Selah) | 7You called out in distress, and I rescued you; I answered you from the cloud of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah |
| 8I said, 'Listen, my people! I will warn you! O Israel, if only you would obey me! | 8Hear, O My people, and I will warn you: O Israel, if only you would listen to Me! |
| 9There must be no other god among you. You must not worship a foreign god. | 9There must be no strange god among you, nor shall you bow to a foreign god. |
| 10I am the LORD, your God, the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it!' | 10I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth, and I will fill it. |
| 11But my people did not obey me; Israel did not submit to me. | 11But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not obey Me. |
| 12I gave them over to their stubborn desires; they did what seemed right to them. | 12So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. |
| 13If only my people would obey me! If only Israel would keep my commands! | 13If only My people would listen to Me, if Israel would follow My ways, |
| 14Then I would quickly subdue their enemies, and attack their adversaries." | 14how soon I would subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their foes! |
| 15(May those who hate the LORD cower in fear before him! May they be permanently humiliated!) | 15Those who hate the LORD would feign obedience, and their doom would last forever. |
| 16"I would feed Israel the best wheat, and would satisfy your appetite with honey from the rocky cliffs." | 16But I would feed you the finest wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” |
